MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Herbert S. VanMetre, 90, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born Jan. 21, 1910, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Allen H. and Sarah Throckmorton VanMetre.
He was a longtime employee of Thatcher's Dairy in Martinsburg and also was a carpenter and farmer.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, V. Virginia Frye VanMetre; a daughter, Peggy L. Cross of Inwood, W.Va.; a sister, Ruth Barbour of Martinsburg; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Irene Howard, and a brother, Ralph William VanMetre.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. D.G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be private in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Janet D. Ware
KABLETOWN, W.Va. - Janet D. "Jiggs" Ware, 81, of Kabletown, died Friday, June 2, 2000, in Charles Town, W.Va.
Born May 5, 1919, in Callan, Va., she was the daughter of the late George Peter and Ethel Ellen Wood Donovan.
She was a graduate of Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte, W.Va., and Raleigh County General Hospital School of Nursing in Beckley, W.Va.
She was a registered nurse associated with Dr. Mahe of Ranson, W.Va., for 14 years and prior to that, worked with the late Dr. John Lee VanMetre in Charles Town for 34 years.
She was a member of Kabletown United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Burwell S. Ware; a daughter, Rebecca K. Borman of Canfield, Ohio; a brother, Richard B. Donovan of Oregon Cave, W.Va.; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Taylor, and six brothers, George Donovan, Hubert Donovan, Mike Donovan, Emmett Donovan, Melvin Donovan and Norman Donovan.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Kabletown United Methodist Church in Kabletown. The Rev. Dan Saurino will officiate. Burial will be in Edgehill cemetery in Charles Town.
Friends will be received Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, 310 Fairfax Blvd., Ranson, W.Va.

Norma J. Geary
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Norma Jean Geary, 63, of 118 Porter Way, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Sweetwater Hospital in Sweetwater, Tenn.
Born March 11, 1937, in Bakerton, W.Va., she was the daughter of Helen Jones Geary of Charles Town and the late James Norman Geary.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Charles Town.
She was a member of Moler's CEOS Club at Moler's Crossroads, Women of the Moose Chapter 1028 of Charles Town and Ladies Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1136 of Brunswick, Md.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sisters, Esther Y. Geary of Charles Town and Dot Barlett of Sweetwater, Tenn.; a brother, William Geary of Winchester, Va.; a niece; and two nephews.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St., Harpers Ferry, W.Va. The Rev. Dee-Ann Dixon will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
William J. Rawding Jr.
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - William J. Rawding Jr., 63, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.
Born June 24, 1936, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late William J. Sr. and Evelyn Keveling Rawding.
He was employed by New Jersey Telephone Co. and by Valley View Nursing Home as a dietary aide.
He was a member of Berkeley Springs Moose Lodge 1483 and also was a volunteer at the Valley View Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Dobak Rawding; two sons, Nelson Padinha of Berkeley Springs and Anthony Padinha of Athens, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
Viewing will be Monday, June 12, and Tuesday, June 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St. in Berkeley Springs.
There will be no services.
Marvin E. Frederick
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Marvin E. Frederick, 66, of Martinsburg, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Born Nov. 10, 1933, in Mifflinburg, Pa., he was the son of Mabel Feehrer Frederick of Watsontown, Pa., and the late James Frederick.
He was a retired professional truck driver for Bonded Carrier Trucking Co., where he worked for 15 years. He was a substitute instructor for James Rumsey Technical Institute for the truck driving school. He also was a driver for the Heart Beat Tour Bus Co.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant for the military police.
He was a member of Watsontown Masonic Lodge 401 A.F.&A.M., AARP, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Janey Cole Frederick; a daughter, Debra J. Thomas of Williamsport, Pa.; four sons, David A. Frederick of Pennsdale, Pa., Kenneth L. Frederick of Pottsgrove, Pa., Thomas E. Frederick of Stephens City, Va., and Roderick L. Frederick of Martinsburg; a brother, Richard Frederick of Watsontown; 21 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew S. Frederick; a sister, Sandra Gass; and a granddaughter.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Everett Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Veterans Combined Honor Guard of Martinsburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Roy M. Mason Sr.
SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. - Roy Myers Mason Sr., 67, of Summit Point, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at his home under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Born April 10, 1933, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Elmer Bryan and Esther Bush Mason.
He farmed with his father, was an orchard manager for Randolph Huyett and later sold veterinarian supplies for White Veterinary Supply.
He was a member of Beulah Chapel, Charles Town, W.Va., where he was superintendent for 50 years. He was a member of Charles Town Presbyterian Church, where he was a former deacon.
He was a member of Ruritan Club of Jefferson County.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bettye Kondner Mason; a daughter, Penny Mason LaRue of Rippon, W.Va.; two sons, Roy Mason Jr. of Summit Point and William B. Mason of Uvilla, Shenandoah Junction, W.Va.; a sister, Juanita Mason Horner of Newark, Del.; seven grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rosa Lee Mason Varner and Naomi Mason Moldoch and two brothers, Paul Mason and Gene Mason.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Charles Town Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William Everhart will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.
