CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Helen Elizabeth Whipp Mercer, 74, of Charles Town died Friday, May 5, 2000, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va.
Born Oct. 10, 1925, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles Roland and Vallie Viola Roderick Whipp.
She was a 1946 graduate of Harpers Ferry High School in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.
She was employed by Lori Lynn Co. Inc. Garment Factory in Ranson, W.Va., for more than 20 years.
She was a Protestant.
She was a member of Moose Chapter 1028 of Charles Town and Amalgamated Garment Workers of America.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Charles C. Mercer; two sons, William R. Mercer and John Charles Thomas Mercer, both of Charles Town; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Rebecca Ann Whipp.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town. Lay Minister Alvin Russell will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen E. Fillman
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Helen Estelle Locke Fillman, 75, of Tuscawilla Hills, died Friday, May 4, 2000, at her home.
Born June 4, 1924, in Farrar, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Thomas N. and Frona Frazier Liles.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Robert Locke, and her second husband, Thomas S. Fillman Sr.
She was a graduate of Fair Oak High School in Fair Oaks, Texas.
She was a homemaker. Earlier, she had been employed as a nurse in Dallas and worked for Superior Electric Co. in Dallas.
She was a Baptist.
She is survived by a sister, Mary Frances Dover of Potomac, Md., nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Restland Funeral Home, Greenville and Restland Streets in Dallas. Brother Jim Brackett will officiate. Burial will be in Restland Memorial cemetery in Dallas.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Louise Light, 76, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1923, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Louis M. and Mary Hammond Johnson Light.
She was formerly employed as a medical secretary at Newton D. Baker Hospital.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.
She is survived by an aunt, Alda Johnson, and a cousin, Thomas Johnson.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale cemetery. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate.
Friends will be received any time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
George J. Cody
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - George J. Cody, 75, of Falling Waters, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
Born July 13, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late James and Gertrude Everett Cody.
He retired from New York Air National Guard.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
He was a member of VFW Post 5199, Oceanside, N.Y., and Senior Bowling League in Pikeside.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Raleigh Cody; four children and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home. The Rev. John V. DiBacco will officiate.

David A. Canby
INWOOD, W.Va. - David Allen Canby, 49, of Inwood, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Nov. 5, 1950, in Martinsburg, he was the son of Bruce Canby of Martinsburg and the late Evelene Johnson Canby.
He retired as an auto mechanic for Allegheny Power Co.
He was a member of Inwood Methodist Church.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Jill Arvin Canby; a daughter, Wendi Shade of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; a son, Jeff Canby of Glengary, W.Va.; three sisters, Sandy Canby Edwards and Jeanette Canby Feagans, both of Inwood, and Joan Canby Aikens of Martinsburg; a brother, Gary Canby of Vanclevesville, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Rodney Canby.
Services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel. The Rev. John Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
