MILDRED V. EBERT
NEW CREEK, W.Va. - Mildred V. Ebert, 78, of HC 72, Box 64, New Creek, died Monday, Sept. 22, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born March 24, 1919, at Scherr, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Ernest M. and Pluma (Hawk) Evans. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Leo G. "Bill" Ebert on July 1, 1995, and by one sister, Madeline Getz.
Mrs. Ebert was a retired elementary school teacher with the Mineral County School system, having last taught at New Creek School. She was a member of the Oakdale Church of the Brethren, Scherr, W.Va.
Surviving are two sons, Ernest G. Ebert and Gary L. Ebert, both of New Creek; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, W.Va., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m
Funeral services will be conducted at the Oakdale Church of The Brethren on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold Garber officiating. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the services.

DEWANE C. CRITES
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Dewane C. Crites, 71, of Carpendale, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 14, 1926, in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Cleland C. Crites and Sallie (Smith) Crites. He also was preceded in death by one brother, William S. Crites; and one sister, Winnie Lee Crites.
Mr. Crites was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II. He was retired from CSX, where he had been a conductor. He was a member of Holy Cross United Methodist Church; American Legion Post No. 52, Piedmont; and the United Transportation Union Local No. 430.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie (Riggleman) Crites; one son, Randy S. Crites and wife Barbara, Ridgeley; one daughter, Vicki L. Hamilton and husband Ken, Carpendale; one brother, Joseph Crites, Keyser; one granddaughter, Tiffany Hamilton; and four grandsons, Scott Crites, Brent Hamilton, Patrick Crites, and Koty Crites.
Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harry L. Burchell Jr. officiating.

VERNON L. CRITES, SR.
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Vernon Lee Crites Sr., 67, of Petersburg, died Friday, July 4, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
Born Feb. 5, 1930, at Masonville, he was a son of the late John M. and Stella (Smith) Crites Kimble. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Johnny Crites.
Mr. Crites retired from the Petersburg Oil Company and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454 and served in the 27th Infantry Regiment, Wolfhounds. He attended Falls Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are his wife Anna Lee (Willis) Crites, with whom he was united in marriage on Nov. 21, 1953; two sons, Vernon L. Crites Jr. and wife Wanda, Purgitsville, and Leslie A. Crites and wife Lori, Petersburg; two daughters, Sheila "Susie" Ketterman and husband Don, Petersburg, and Pam Keplinger and husband Randy, Petersburg; one sister, Zola See, Moorefield; 11 grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Luther Travis, the Rev. Jayme Carter and the Rev. Robert J. Klier officiating.
Military graveside services will be accorded by Potomac Highlands VFW Post 6454 and American Legion Post 78 of Petersburg.
Memorials may be made to the family or to Falls Assembly of God Church.
DELVIN CROSTON
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Conard Delvin Croston, 82, of Romney, died Wednesday, April 30, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Center, Martinsburg.
Born Dec. 8, 1914, in Points, he was the son of the late James W. and Virginia (Baker) Croston.
Mr. Croston was a retired inspector for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the Blue Goose Growers, Hagerstown. He was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Points; the Romney Lions Club; the Jersey Mountain Ruritan Club; the American Legion Hampshire Post 91; the VFW Wappocoma Post 1101; and a board member of the East Hampshire Water Service Commission.
During World War II, Mr. Croston served as a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force 781st Squadron, serving as a flight engineer and turret gunner on a B24 bomber. On Aug. 3, 1944, he was shot down over Austria after a bombing mission in Germany. He was sent to Stalag Luft 4, a prisoner of war camp in North East Germany. Near the end of the war, the Germans took the prisoners on a 57 day 700 mile death march. Tech. Sgt. Croston was liberated on May 3, 1945, suffering from malnutrition and pneumonia, weighing 87 pounds.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Leona (Allen) Croston, Romney; two stepsons, Richard L. Jackson, Newark, Del., and James B. Jackson, North Haven, Conn.; two brothers, Clifton Croston, Frederica, Del., and Bernard Croston, Savage; one sister, Bernice Babb, Cumberland; six stepgrandchildren; and 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home on Saturday, May 3, 1997, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harley F. Baldwin officiating.
Military graveside rites will be accorded by Veterans Organizations of Hampshire County.

ARGYLE P. CHILDS
KINGWOOD, W.Va. - Argyle P. Childs, 95, of Kingwood, died Monday, April 7, 1997, in Kingwood.
Born Feb. 27, 1902, in Newburg, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Lucy (Hawley) Burke. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Childs; one son, Pat Childs; three brothers; and three sisters.
She was of the Methodist faith. She graduated from Fairmont State College and was a classroom teacher for the Preston County Board of Education.
Surviving is one sister, Neola Sapp, Englewood, Fla.
Friends may call at the Browning Funeral Home, Kingwood, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Moon officiating.
MILDRED E. CHIDESTER
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - Mildred E. Chidester, 76, of Bridgeport, W.Va., formerly of Cresaptown, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997, at Meadow View Manor.
She was born April 6, 1921, in Manown, W.Va., a daughter of the late Howard Childers and Ocie Bell Everly Childers. On Dec. 6, 1946, she married
Emory Earl Chidester who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Chidester also was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. James (Paula Sue) Catherman; three brothers, Donald Robert Childers, John Gerald Childers, William Blake Childers; and one sister, Mrs. Faye Alice Carr.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Wallace (Sylvia Ann) Peacock, Rochester Hills, Mich., Mrs. Ada Alice Clise, Cresaptown; two sons, Raymond Albert Chidester, Lawton, Okla., and Noble Clarence Chidester, Troy, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Chidester was a retired beautician and the former owner and operator of her own shop. She was a graduate of the Mason Phillips Beauty Academy, Pittsburgh, Pa. She taught hair for several years at the Beauty Cage Beauty School in Cumberland. Mrs. Chidester was a member of the Trinity Evangelic Lutheran Church in Leesburg, Va. She was a former member of the Moose in both Cumberland and Frostburg.
