NELSON W. ESTEP
WILEY FORD, W.Va. - Nelson Willard Estep, 71, of Wiley Ford, died Friday, July 4, 1997, at Dawn View Nursing Home, Fort Ashby.
Born Nov. 18, 1925, in Macanie, Va., he was the son of the late William J. and Dora (Lindamood) Estep. He also was preceded in death by his wife Erma E. (Johnson) Estep; two brothers, Kirby R. Estep and Galen R. Estep; and one half brother, Charles K. Lindamood.
Mr. Estep was a retired employee of Mineral County Schools in which he worked as head custodian at Frankfort High School. He served in the Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Naval Reserves Mobil Construction Battalion No. 0623, Christ United Methodist Church, West Virginia Association of School Retirees and its County Association, Navy Seabee Veterans of America, Ridgeley American Legion, and a life member of the Naval Enlisted Reserve Association. While Mr. Estep was in the military service, he received the following honors: Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy E Ribbon, Navy Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic - Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Armed Forces Reserve Medal. When he retired from the Navy Seabees, he had achieved the Grade of P01/E6.
Surviving are four brothers, William J. Estep Jr. and wife Mary, Elizabethtown, Pa., John D. Estep and wife Mary, Palmyra, Pa., Richard L. Estep and wife Shirley, Mariett, Pa., Austin E. Estep and wife Eva, Edinburg, Pa.; five sisters, Hilda Helmick and husband Frank, Verona, Va., Martha Copenhover and husband Garner, Stephenson, Va., Irene Covert, Elizabethtown, Pa., Helen Mitchell and husband Olin, Harrisonburg, Va., Frances Miller, Edinburg, Va.; one sister-in-law, Gloria Estep, Woodstock, Va.; one half sister-in-law, Lillian Lindamood, Broadway, Va.; 21 nephews, 18 nieces, and several great nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Md., on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stan Cardwell and the Rev. Benny Brakeall officiating.
Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Combined Veterans Color Guard.
Pallbearers will be members of the Cumberland Seabees, Raymond Shields, Earl Hopkins, John Murphy, Charlie Conway, Randall Starkey and Don Knotts, a former principal at Frankfort High School.
HELEN M. BROWN
KEYSER, W.Va. - Helen Marie Brown, 86, of Route 2, Keyser, died Sunday, March 23, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Sept. 18, 1910, in Short Gap, she was the daughter of the late John and Blanche (Biser) Spencer. She also was preceded in death by her son, Robert W. Riley; one brother, Arnold Spencer; and one sister, Edna Wagoner.
Mrs. Brown was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Women's Society.
Surviving are her husband, Arno S. Brown, of Dawn View Manor Nursing Home; one daughter, Mary Jane Phillips, Bowling Green, Md.; four sons, Dale Riley, Cumberland, Edward Riley, Fort Ashby, Thomas Riley, Fort Ashby, and Roger Brown, Bedford, Pa.; one brother, Ervin Spencer, Short Gap; one sister, Lola Arnold, Short Gap; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The Women's Society will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Glessner and the Rev. Sumner Sawyers officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Riley, Mike Goin, Troy Brown, Nathan Brown, D.R. Riley, and Rusty Riley.
ELIZABETH A. FRYER
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Elizabeth Antoinette "Bessie" Fryer, 79, of Ridgeley, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Ridgeley, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Kroll) Malamphy. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Fryer Sr., in 1993; one son, Joseph Fryer; one sister, Anna Malamphy; and five brothers, Frank, Edward, William, Joseph, and James Malamphy.
Mrs. Fryer was a 1936 graduate of the Ursuline Academy. She had worked at Rosenbaum's, Cumberland Cloak, and Jeannine's. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Columbus Council No. 586, and the Cumberland Historical cemetery Organization.
Surviving are three sons, Charles H. Fryer Jr. and wife Nellie, Furnace Acres, Ridgeley, Capt. Patrick L. Fryer, CHC, USN, Washington, D.C., and Stephen Fuller Fryer and wife Catherine, Valley View Addition, Ridgeley; three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Andrews and husband Harry, Keyser, Sheila Ann Mickey and husband Donald, Furnace Acres, Ridgeley, and Camilla Rae Whiteman and husband Roy "Buck;" 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
The rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Monday at 2:15 p.m. led by Mary Ann Eckhart, assisted by members of the Cumberland Historical cemetery Organization.

WILLIAM JAMES BROWN
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - William James Brown, 89, of Short Gap, died Monday, June 23, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 8, 1907, in Morgantown, he was the son of the late Emory C. and Sarah Catherine (Trader) Brown. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Opal (Gibson) Brown.
Mr. Brown was a retired mechanic for Boeing Aircraft.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Hoffer, Philadelphia, Pa., and Rebecca Compton, Athens, Pa.; a son, James Brown; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
At the request of Mr. Brown, his remains will be cremated. There will be no visitation and no services.
Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
ALBERT L. "AL" BROWNING, SR.
WILEY FORD, W.Va. - Albert L. "Al" Browning, Sr., 76, of Wiley Ford, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 5, 1921, in Flintstone, he was the son of the late Walker and Mary O. (Garland) Browning.
Mr. Browning was a former employee of the South Cumberland Planing Mill, and retired from the Cumberland Concrete Corporation, Cumberland. He was a member of the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren and a former member of the Wiley Ford Volunteer Fire Company.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary V. (Carlile) Browning; five sons, Albert L. "Butch" Browning, Jr. and wife, Rae, Fort Ashby, W.Va., Richard W. Browning and wife, Brenda, Carpendale, W.Va., Randy L. Browning, Wiley Ford, Frank W. Campbell and wife, Linda, Splendora, Texas, and Ralph L. Campbell and wife Stacy, Wiley Ford; numerous foster children; two sisters, Hazel Bobo, Cumberland, and Nora Hiett and husband, Charles, Short Gap; ten grandchildren, Tanya Browning Smith and husband, Robbie, Albert L. "Butch" Browning III, Michael Shane Browning and wife, Wendi, Troy A. Browning and wife, Stacey, Reed B. Browning, Shawn Browning, Nathan Browning, Seth Campbell, Travis Campbell, and Brent Campbell; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren, Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Dietz and the Rev. Benny Brakeall officiating.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren.
MARY LOU BROWNING
KEYSER, W.Va. - Mary Lou (Haggerty) Browning, 68, of 500 Carskadon Lane, Keyser, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born Sept. 18, 1928, at Keyser, she was the daughter of the late Bessie M. Browning and the adopted daughter of the late Frederick and Hallie Haggerty.
Mrs. Browning was Presbyterian by faith.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas L. Browning, Lacey, Wash. Daniel F. Browning and wife Theresa, Nitro, and Michael D. Browning and wife, Penny, Poinciana, Fla.; one daughter, Diana L. Barbera and husband Ernie, Fountain; five grandchildren, Craig Browning, Lacey, Wash., Angelina Browning, Nitro, Shaina Browning, Poinciana, Fla., Nunzio E. Barbera III, Fountain, and Joseph "Peppy" Barbera, Fountain.
