LOREN E. DENT SR.
PURGITSVILLE, W.Va. - Loren E. Dent Sr., 76, a resident of Dawn View Nursing Home, Fort Ashby, formerly of Purgitsville, died Friday, Sept. 12, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Dec. 10, 1920, in Old Fields, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nettie (Shoemaker) Dent. He also was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Dent retired from the Chessie System Railroad as a carman after serving 36 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Carman and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European theater. He was a member of the American Legion, Westernport, and the VFW, McCoole.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice Irene (McKenzie) Dent, Dawn View Nursing Home, Fort Ashby; two sons, Loren E. Dent Jr., Fort Ashby, and John R. Dent, Burlington; one daughter, Sylvia J. Baker, New Creek; one sister, Dorcas Genemore, West Newton, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, Tracey Rohrbaugh, Loren E. Dent III, Kevin Dent, Shanna Day, Travis Dent, Lucas Dent, Shane Dent, Cody Dent, Scott Orem, Mark Orem, and Michael Orem; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel E. Biser officiating.
MARSHALL D. ALDERTON
ELK GARDEN, W.Va. - Marshall Dennis "Junior" Alderton, 78, of Elk Garden, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born June 11, 1919, in Westernport, Md., he was the son of the late M. M. and Ethel (Hanlin) Alderton.
Mr. Alderton was a retired carpenter, and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Piedmont American Legion and the Mount Storm VFW.
Surviving are his wife, Beulah "Bobby" (Duling) Alderton; one son, Dennie Alderton, Pennsville, N.J.; two daughters, Barbara Mason, Keyser, and JoAnn Howdyshell, San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Hartmansville Methodist Church on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Gerstel and Mr. Lowell McDonald officiating.
THELMA E. HICKS
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Thelma Elizabeth (Berg) Hicks, 74, devoted wife and exceptional mother and grandmother, of Romney, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
Born Feb. 4, 1923, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Ester (Grable) Berg. She also was preceded in death by one son, William E. Hicks Jr., on May 4, 1991.
Mrs. Hicks was a homemaker. She was a faithful member of the Romney Presbyterian Church, and a very active member of GFWC of Romney and served as president for two terms. She held other offices such as secretary and treasurer and was a member of the GFWC Chorus. She was district president of the GFWC Eastern District and served as a GFWC WV Council member of the Scholarship Loan Board for many years.
Mrs. Hicks was always an active community volunteer and served as den mother for the Cub Scouts, worked with the Girl Scout cookie program, was a Patron Friend of West Virginia Public Libraries, and a past board member of WNPB Public Broadcasting.
Surviving are her husband, William E. Hicks Sr., Mayor of Romney; three sons, Ronald J. Hicks, Reedsville, Richard H. Hicks, Augusta, and Larry M. Hicks, Pittsboro, N.C.; one daughter, Diane L. Hicks Cox, Fairmont; one brother, Harry Berg, Conyers, Ga.; one sister, Ruth Haskins, Pittsburgh; and seven grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the Romney Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John S. Franklin officiating.

ROSCOE B. DEAN
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Roscoe Brooks Dean, 56, of Romney, died Sunday, July 27, 1997, at the Trough General Store and Canoe Rental, Romney.
Born July 26, 1941, in the Trough Area, Hardy County, W.Va., he was the son of the late James Howard and Retha Jane (Cox) Dean.
Mr. Dean was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He was a lifelong, active member of the St. Luke Presbyterian Church and served as Treasurer for the St. Luke cemetery. He was a dedicated teacher and coach for 31 years and an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing and all competitive activities. He graduated from Romney High School in 1959 and Shepherd College in 1963. While at Shepherd Mr. Dean started on the Varsity Basketball team from 1959-1963. He later received his Master's degree from West Virginia University. During a 10 year period of his career, Mr. Dean coached at Robert E. Lee High School and Robison Secondary School, where he served as head basketball coach. During this period he led three different teams to Virginia State Championships. For the past 10 years, Mr. Dean has taught Health, Careers and Physical Education at Romney Junior High School. During a portion of this time he coached the Freshman Basketball team. Mr. Dean and his wife Jeannie owned and operated the Trough General Store and Canoe Rental for the past five years.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years Jeannie (Propst) Dean, Romney; two sons, Jeffrey S. Buffenmeyer and wife Sherry, Finzel, Md., Jerry Ross Dean, Romney; one daughter, Jodie B. Corbin and husband Tony, Petersburg; two brothers, Jennings H. Dean, West Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jerry N. Dean, Romney; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Marie Rinker and Mrs. Lucy Jane Staggs, both of Romney; one granddaughter, Taylor Marie Buffenmeyer, Finzel, Md.; and many wonderful friends.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Romney First United Methodist Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John S. Franklin officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services.

STEPHEN J. HOLSHEY
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Stephen Joseph "Yum" Holshey, 80, of Carpendale, died Monday, April 7, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Dec. 4, 1916, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Michael and Dorothy (Lambert) Holshey. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Peter and Nicholas Holshey; and one sister, Mary Crites.
Mr. Holshey was a retired electrician for the CSX Transportation Co. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Electricians Local.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian M. (Rowe) Holshey; one daughter, C. Rosalie Hollinger and husband Dale, Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Phillip Holshey and wife Olive, Cumberland; and one sister, Anna Feister, Augusta.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Christian wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 8:45 p.m. with Brother James T. Kirkpatrick, ESC, officiating.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday at noon with Monsignor Robert Passarelli as celebrant.
ELVA PARK ALBIN
BEAN SETTLEMENT, W.Va. - Elva Park Albin, 93, of Bean Settlement, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at the E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center, Baker.
Born Jan. 8, 1904, in Hardy County, she was a daughter of the late Allen and Mary (Combs) Park. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Albin, in June 1966; one brother; and two sisters.
Mrs. Albin was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, was church organist for many years, and was active in the United Methodist Women organization. She was a graduate of Shepherd College and member of the Shepherd Alumni Association. She was a retired teacher and principal from Hardy and Jefferson counties; was active in Extension Homemakers; and enjoyed traveling.
Surviving are three stepdaughters, Emma Jean Hockman, Winchester, Va., Mary Plum, Hampton, Va., and Betty Jane Decker, Martinsburg; one sister, Nova Peters, Rock Oak; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Fraley Funeral Home, Moorefield, on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Asbury United Methodist Church, Bean Settlement, on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Luther Crites officiating.

PAUL K. DEANER
WILEY FORD, W.Va. - Paul Keith Deaner, 70, of Wiley Ford, died Thursday, April 17, 1997, at his residence.
Born July 29, 1926, in Somerset, Pa., he was the son of the late Spurgeon and Ruth (Coughenour) Deaner. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Wendell Deaner.
Mr. Deaner was a self-employed upholsterer. He was a Protestant by faith and an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Edith (Turner) Deaner; three sons, Paul Harry Deaner, U.S.Army, Clayton, N.C., James S. Deaner, Hedgesville, and Alan K. Deaner, Hedgesville; one brother, Leland Deaner, Ravenna, Ohio; three sisters, Carol Minnick, Cumberland, Myra Myers, Greensburg, Pa., Rena Souders, Ridgeley; seven grandchildren; and special friends, the members of Wiley Ford Volunteer Fire Department.
