JOHN L. SMITH
BURLINGTON, W.Va. - John L. Smith, 87, of Baker's Addition, Burlington, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, Keyser.
Born May 11, 1910, in Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late John and Anna Smith. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Elizabeth (Howdyshell) Smith, who died on Oct. 24, 1976.
Mr. Smith retired from Westvaco Corporation. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Keyser. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed ginsenging.
Surviving are a son, John Smith and wife Sandy, Williamsburg, Va.; two daughters, Ruby Kitzmiller and husband Kitzy, Burlington, and Joyce Ann Burns and husband John, Sanford, N.C.; three brothers, Joe and Albert Smith, both of Piedmont, and Tony Smith, Keyser; one sister, Agnes Poland, Piedmont; 10 grandchildren, Kathy Lynn Smith Ansel, Wendy Biser, John Mark Smith, Robert Matthew Kitzmiller, Christopher Smith, Diana Clayton, Crystal Kitzmiller, and Shannon Burns; four step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel Biser officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
JOSHUA R. SMITH
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Joshua Rodney Smith, 16, of Fort Ashby, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born Feb. 25, 1981, in Manassas, Va., he was the son of Sheila Ann Trenton, Fort Ashby, and Rodney Arnold Smith, Washington, D.C.
Joshua had just completed his sophomore year at Frankfort High School.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He had belonged to Cub Scout Pack 69, and had played baseball for the Hot Stove League.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his maternal grandparents, who lovingly raised him, Arnold and Elva Trenton, Fort Ashby; paternal grandparents, William and Dorothy Smith, Manassas, Va.; maternal great-grandmother, Beatrice Myrtle Trenton Harrison, Purgitsville, W.Va.; paternal great-grandmother, A.W. Escue, Point Pleasant, W.Va.; five half sisters, April Dao, Heather Dao, Jennifer Dao and Dorothy Dao, all of Arlington, Va., and Alexandria Smith, Washington, D.C.; one half brother, Dean Dao, Arlington; two special aunts, Sandy Smith, Wiley Ford, and Linda Kesner, Fort Ashby; and his stepmother, Gretchen Smith, Washington, D.C.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dallas Forren officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Roman Sibley, John Miller, Chad Kirk, Chucky Ryan, J.J. Adams and Clinton Feaster.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Emmerick, Jay Bridges, Brian Murray and Leland Shanholtz.

V. BERYL SMITH
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Virginia Beryl Smith, 82, of Romney, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997 at the E.A. Hawse Continuous Care Center, Baker, W.Va.
She was born Sept. 30, 1915 at South Branch, Hampshire County, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late C. Victor and Anna (Henkel) Smith.
After elementary school at South Branch, high school at Paw Paw, and two years at Shepherd College, Miss Smith attained the Standard Normal Certificate and began her teaching career. Subsequently, she obtained a bachelor's degree at Shepherd College, studied at Temple University, and obtained a master's degree at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Miss Smith was retired from a career of teaching at the Romney Elementary School, Romney. She considered teaching a privilege, and her devotion to her many pupils will be remembered by all.
She was a member of Romney First United Methodist Church, Hampshire Association of Retired School Employees, and a past member of GFWC, Romney. During her elementary and high school years she was active as a 4-H Club member. She was selected as a member of the West Virginia 4-H All Stars and held a lifetime membership. She also was selected as a delegate from West Virginia to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago.
She is survived by one brother, Harold H. Smith, Concord, N.C.; one niece, Sharon Smith Hayes; three nephews, Harold H. Smith, Jr., Charles Gregory Smith, and Richard Alan Smith; two great-nephews; and three great-nieces.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Sunday from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating.

DARREL SNYDER
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Darrel Snyder, 84, of 7265 Melford Street, Sacramento, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Sacramento.
Born April 24, 1912, in Headsville, W.Va., he was a son of the late Guy N. and Emma M. (Roberts) Snyder.
Mr. Snyder was a retired plumber. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are two sons, Robert G. Snyder, Gladson, S.C., and Jack D. Snyder, Westernport, Md.; two sisters, Betty Ann Phillippi, Sacramento, and Fern Keller, Keyser, W.Va.; his companion, Anita Tucker, Sacramento; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Harry A. Nauman and Son Funeral Home, 4041 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento, on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
ERMA L. SNYDER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Erma Lee (Thomas) Snyder, 77, of 1700 Virginia Ave., West Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Keyser, died Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at the Mercy General Hospital, Sacramento.
Born March 1, 1920, at Keyser, she was a daughter of the late William Wade and Mary Jane (Calhoun) Thomas. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert F. Snyder, on May 22, 1993; two brothers, E. Wade Thomas and Albert W. "Al" Thomas; and two sisters, Julia E. Oates and Roberta E. Johnson.
Mrs. Snyder was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church and the West Sacramento Senior Center. She was a 1939 graduate of Keyser High School.
Surviving are two sons, Harry Edward Snyder and Jan W. Snyder, both of West Sacramento; one daughter, Cheryl Forrestter, Sacramento; two brothers, Harry Thomas and Donald Thomas, both of Keyser; one sister, Eloise Mathena, Keyser; and seven grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Wednesday, July 2, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Graveside services will follow the visitation, at the Queens Point cemetery, Keyser, with the Rev. Sue Culbertson Jarrett officiating.
JUANITA S. SNYDER
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Juanita Shanholtz Snyder, 84, a resident of Romney for 44 years, died Sunday, April 6, 1997, at the Capon Manor Care Home, Capon Bridge.
Born Sept. 15, 1912, in Paw Paw, she was the daughter of the late Carl Leo and Ida (Patterson) Shanholtz. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Snyder, on Feb. 19, 1962.
Mrs. Snyder was a nurse for the Hampshire County Public Schools. She was a member of Romney First United Methodist Church, and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 84, Romney, where she was Past Worthy Matron from 1965 to 1966.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol Ann Hine, Charlottesville, Va., and Margaret "Peggy" Ellen Menender, Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Margaret Gordon, Paw Paw; and one grandson, Daniel Hine, Charlottesville, Va.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, Monday, April 7, 1997, from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7 p.m.
Services will be at Romney First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating.
