FRANK EVERETT MCCARTY
BURLINGTON, W.Va. - This is a tribute and an obituary of Frank Everett McCarty, whose life was abruptly ended along with his mother, Thelma Ruby McCarty, as the result of a tragic occurrence at their home in Burlington on Oct. 27, 1997. He will be most deeply and sadly missed by all who knew him and loved him.
Born June 9, 1946, Frank was the son of Lester LeRoy McCarty and Thelma Ruby McCarty, both deceased. He is survived by his sister, Emma Marie Daniels, Petersburg; his brother, Raymond LeRoy McCarty, Keyser; four nieces, Donna, Tammy, Josette, and Carrie; and one nephew, Patrick. In addition, Frank had friends and extended family that are too numerous to mention.
Frank was a hero in his own sort. He served in the Special Forces in the military, with at least two tours in Vietnam and a tour in Korea. War was no stranger to Frank. He went where and when he was needed. He had decorations, but he would not speak of them. He just wanted to be treated like a "simple folk." He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Sharpshooter Badge Rifle M-14, Sharpshooter Badge Rifle M-16, and Korean Service Medal. He also served on the border patrol while in the service.
Frank had much to tell, but he chose to tell very little. He was never overly "braggy" or brass, he just liked to make people laugh and to attempt to help anyone and everyone he could. He usually would not accept any reward or money for doing what he could. That was the reason he had so many friends. People who came into contact with him commented, "He is a really good person" and "friend to the end" or "a person that couldn't help enough." Frank was only happy when he would help someone else.
He found some solace in goats and in keeping some "layers" for his Mom, but he mostly liked to be around people. He adopted every child he ever met and became "Uncle Frank" to them all. He has so many "god children" that this newspaper is not large enough to name them all. Never has there been a man quite like Frank and never will there be one again!
We, his family and friends wish to let the world know about him and to let them know how much we will miss him. Also, we want to let them know that he WILL BE REMEMBERED, in his stories, in his laughter, in his jokes, and in his smile. We will all remember FRANK, "THE MAN WHO MADE US LAUGH AND LEARN TO BE HAPPY!"
A memorial service for Frank and his mother will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md. Anyone who wishes to send a letter about Frank to be read at the memorial may do so by sending it to the address below. We wish to request that, in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to do so may send a memorial contribution to his nephew, Patrick W. McCarty, P.O. Box 404, Ridgeley, WV 26753 or c/o The Boal Funeral Home, 111 Church St., Westernport, MD 21562.
We thank all who have helped with this tragedy and kept us in their prayers. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you!
