JOSEPH E. SHEPHERD
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Joseph E. Shepherd, 81, of Carpendale, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at the Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit, Cumberland, Md.
Born Jan. 30, 1917, in Ridgeley, he was the son of the late Joseph C. and Ethel M. (Shaffer) Shepherd. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Maffley and Elsie Jones; and one brother, Louis "Frank" Shepherd.
Mr. Shepherd retired from the Chessie System Railroad in 1984 after 30 years of service. He also was a former employee of the Celanese Corp. He was an active member of the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren. Mr. Shepherd was an avid hunter and gardener, and enjoyed spending time in the mountains of St. George, W.Va.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Catherine I. (Helmick) Shepherd, Ridgeley; one daughter, Betty J. (Shepherd) Lambert and husband Dwight M., Ridgeley; one son, Joseph R. Shepherd and wife Donna, Parsons; two granddaughters, Cathy D. (Lambert) Flanagan and Lisa M. Lambert, both of Ridgeley; one grandson, Joseph R. Shepherd Jr. and wife Debbie, Parsons; two great-granddaughters, Amber Lynn Flanagan and Andrea Lee Flanagan, Ridgeley; one sister, Agnes C. Miller and husband Vernon, Cumberland; and two brothers, Robert K. Shepherd and wife Grace, Ridgeley, and Charles W. Shepherd, Cumberland, Md.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Dietz officiating. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Joseph R. Shepherd Sr., Joseph R. Shepherd Jr., Edward F. Shepherd, Raymond Shepherd, William Shepherd, Robert F. Shepherd and Clarence Hawse.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Nannette McCullough, the nurses at Sacred Heart Hospice Unit, and the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department.
FRANK F. SHERMAN
OLD FIELDS, W.Va. - Frank Fay Sherman, age 63, of Old Fields, W.Va., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney, W.Va., following a 12-year battle with emphasema.
He was born June 6, 1934, in Moorefield, W.Va., a son of the late Ida Beryl Sherman.
He was a nature lover, had served in the U.S. Army, and was a former owner and operator of Frank's Bait Shop in Old Fields. He retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways, and was a member of John M. Golliday Post #64 American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Anna J. (Kerns) Sherman; one son, David S. Sherman, Old Fields; two daughters, Joyce F. Sherman, Old Fields, and Kathy A. Sherman, Memphis, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Christopher M. and Samantha D. Sherman.
At the request of the deceased, his body was assigned to the Human Gift Registry of West Virginia University.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Moorefield Middle School Library Fund, 30 Caledonia Drive, Moorefield, or to the Hardy County Library.

NELLIE G. SHERMAN
RIG, W.Va. - Nellie G. Sherman, age 85, of Rig, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at her residence.
Born Jan. 9, 1913, in Rig, she was the daughter of the late Conway Crites and Mary Susan (Eye) Crites. In addition to her parents, she also was preceded in death by five infant children; four brothers; and two sisters.
Mrs. Sherman was a member of Bible Baptist Church at Frosty Hollow.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Ocie E. Sherman, whom she married
June 25, 1931; six sons, Ray W. Sherman, Columbus, Ga., Eugene C. Sherman, Moorefield, Wendell G. Sherman, Rig, twin son, Carl W. Sherman, Moorefield, Woodrow Sherman, Rig, Neil Sherman, Mathias; five daughters, Mary Ann Ganoe, Baltimore, Md., Josephine Ours, Rig, twin daughter, Carol Crites, Rig, Sue Kyle, Moorefield, and the Rev. Elizabeth "Libby" Martin, Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Glenn Crites, Rig; two sisters, Belle Evans, Rig, and Eva Snyder, Rig; 31 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Elizabeth "Libby" Martin officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Grant County Hospice.
ANNA WAYNE TAYLOR
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - A. Wayne Taylor, 80, of Petersburg, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at the Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg, where she had resided since Feb. 16, 1998.
Born Aug. 28, 1917, at Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late William A. Sites and Hazel (Ours) Sites. She also was preceded in death by her husband, I. Hogueland Taylor, on Nov. 29, 1969; and one son, Hogueland Wayne Taylor on July 10, 1959.
Mrs. Taylor and her husband had been lifelong farmers. At the time of her death, she was a partner of Cottage Hill Farm with her son, W.C. "Sonny" Taylor and family. She had served on the Domestic Arts Committee for the Tri County Fair for several years. She was a member of the Memorial Church of the Brethren in Petersburg, and member of the North Fork Homemakers.
Surviving are one son, W.C. "Sonny" Taylor and wife Carol, Petersburg; one sister, Wilma Schaeffer, a resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; one brother, Ralph W. Sites, Keyser; three grandchildren, Mark Taylor, Michael Taylor and Will Taylor; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Raymer Cox and the Rev. Mary Cox officiating.
Interment will be in the South Branch Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.

EVELYN "TOOT" TAYLOR
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Evelyn "Toot" Taylor, 79, of Erin Street, Piedmont, died July 24, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born in Piedmont on Feb. 21, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Washington and Bessie (Spillard) Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall F. Taylor; four sisters; one brother; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Waldon United Methodist Church. She was the Financial Secretary for the Waldon cemetery.
She is survived by two sons, Robert K. Taylor, and wife, Beth, Frederick C. Taylor, and wife, Lillian; three daughters, Leola Stewart, and husband, Charles, Mary L. Coleman, and husband, Raymond, Freda Fisher, and husband Theodore, all of Piedmont; 21 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Fredlock Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating.
Memorials may be directed to the Waldon cemetery in care of Leola Stewart.
WINONA M. TEETS
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Winona Margie Teets, 67, of Stedman, N.C., formerly of Ridgeley, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at her residence.
Born Jan. 11, 1931, in Ridgeley, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Rose (Helmick) Coffman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd D. Teets, in 1983.
Mrs. Teets retired with 20 years of service from Stromberg-Carlson, Lake Mary, Fla., where she was involved in telecommunications and electronics. She was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Bruce Teets, Stedman; one daughter, Dale Goldbach, Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at the Davis Memorial cemetery on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lowell Garland officiating.
