EUGENE P. SNYDER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Eugene Porter Snyder, 78, of Jake Staggers Road (P.O. Box 703) Keyser, died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born Oct. 6, 1919, at Millhein, Pa., he was a son of the late Porter Glen and Hazel E. (Plunket) Snyder.
Mr. Snyder was a graduate of Hancock College of Aeronautics, Santa Maria, Calif. He was a retired First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. A member of an elite force which mapped every square foot of France and Germany during World War II from the air, he flew P-38 Photo Reconnaissance missions out of Mount Farm, England. His commander said that Gene was "one of the finest, bravest and most well-liked pilots in the 7th Photo Group" and that his "contributions during the war were outstanding." He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism during the war.
Following the war, Gene completed a career as the Safety Director and Personnel Manager at Marquette Cement Company in Hagerstown, Md. He retired from there in 1977.
Mr. Snyder was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Reeses Mill, W.Va.; L.O.O.M. #662, Keyser; Boyce-Houser Post #41 American Legion, Keyser; Queens Point Memorial Post #6675 VFW, McCoole, Md.; 7th Photo Group Association, The Eighth Air Force Historical Society.
Surviving are his wife, Frances (Staggers) Snyder; two daughters, Donna Armstrong and Suzanne Short, both of Hagerstown, Md.; one son, Thomas Snyder, Virginia; two sisters, Sally Garthwaite, Terre Haute, Ind., and Gladys A. Miller, Ponoka Alberta, Canada; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the Centenary United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dallas Forren officiating. Interment will be in the Centenary cemetery, Reeses Mill, W.Va.
The body will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour prior to the services.
JOHN E. SNYDER
KEYSER, W.Va. - John E. Snyder, 102, formerly of the Cut-Off Road, Keyser, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998, at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 14, 1896, in Mineral County, W.Va., he was a son of the late David K. and Minnie (Riggleman) Snyder. Twice married
, he also was preceded in death by both wives, Ollie (Crites) Snyder, on Feb. 9, 1960, and Myrtle Lee (Jackson) Stevens Snyder, on Feb. 26, 1988. He also was preceded in death by one stepson, Lawrence Stevens; one stepdaughter, Bernice Stevens; two brothers, Elijah and Dwayne Snyder; and four sisters, Effie Gurd, Mattie Crites, Stella Hanna and Eleanor Bosley.
Mr. Snyder was a retired carman on the B&O; Railroad with 40 years of service. He was a member of the Keyser Assembly of God Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America.
Surviving are two sons, David E. Snyder and wife Hazel, Keyser, and Hetzel G. Snyder and wife Edith, New Castle, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Millie Young, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; one sister, Eula Wertman, a resident of the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor George Keenan officiating.
ROBERT M. SNYDER
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Robert Martin Snyder died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
He was born Sept. 6, 1912, at Lahmansville, a son of Noah Webster and Maggie Varner Snyder. Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Elbert L., Lloyd N., and Gladstone Snyder.
He married
Gail Hiser on Nov. 25, 1937. They have four children, Becky Peters, Petersburg, Margaret Bensenhaver, Virginia Beach, Va., Shirley Williams, Albuquerque, N.M., and Bobby Snyder, Timberline, Canaan Valley. They have seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He graduated from Petersburg High School, Class of 1932, and attended St. Johns Junior College from 1932-1933. He obtained a B.S. degree in Agriculture from West Virginia University in 1937. He received a Teaching Certificate from Shepherd College, and he attended Princeton University in 1944, Harvard University in 1945, and took a Foreign Service Course at Boston University in 1960.
He retired in 1972 after 20 years overseas and 36 years with the government. He has operated his home farm and has given freely of his time as a volunteer to help Grant County and West Virginia from 1972 until his death. He has been President and Director of Potomac Highlands Travel Council and has served on the Board of the Grant County Public Library. He has held many offices in Kiwanis, Golden-K, AARP, and the Nature Conservancy. He was a member of the Lahmansville United Methodist Church, and was a Sunday School teacher at Grove Street United Methodist Church at the time of his death.
He was a veteran of World War II.
He also was a member of Foreign Service Association, American Legion Post #78, Petersburg, the WVU Alumni Association, International Platform Association, U.S. Natural Trust for Historic Preservation, Commission on Aging, Petersburg Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M., and the Explorers.
He has received many awards including National 4-H alumni award, 4-H Congress 1982; Distinguished Alumnus Award West Virginia College of Agriculture and Forestry, 1987; named to the West Virginia Agriculture and Forestry Hall of Fame, 1991.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 12, at the Grove Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Longbon and the Rev. George Widmyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Lahmansville cemetery. Petersburg Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a graveside service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

WILEY FORD, W.Va. - Friends will be received for H. Denver Sachs at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Faith Assembly of God Church, Wiley Ford, Monday at 1 p.m. Friends also will be received one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. Pallbearers will be his three grandsons along with Thomas Houdersheldt, Mason Grogg and Ben Smith.

WILEY FORD, W.Va. - H. Denver Sachs, 77, of Wiley Ford, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Harvey A. and Mollie F. "Mom" (Clites) Sachs. He was also preceded in death by one son, Michael E. Sachs; one brother, Edward F. Sachs; and a great-grandson, Zane Sachs.
Mr. Sachs was a retired car foreman for CSX Transportation, formerly B&O; Railroad. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church and served as a deacon for several years. He was an honorary member of the Wiley Ford Fire Department, and had served as President for many years. He was a volunteer at the Wiley Ford and Springfield Senior Citizens Centers. He was active in the local Republican Party, and was a member of the Eagles and the BRC of A, Local #656.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Marion G. (Taylor) Sachs; one son, Denver A. Sachs, Wiley Ford; one daughter, Mitzie (Sachs) Smith, Cumberland; one daughter-in-law, Jackie Sachs, Wiley Ford; three sisters, Delphy Peer and husband, June, Maxine Gear and Dottie Houdersheldt, all of Wiley Ford; five grandchildren, John Sachs and wife, Mel, Wiley Ford, Billy Sachs and wife, April, Fort Ashby, Denise Sachs, Wiley Ford, Michael Smith and wife, Cheryl, Cresaptown, and Monica Herbaugh, Cumberland; six great-grandchildren, Taylor and Nicole Smith, Elizabeth Sachs, Justin and Joshua Sachs, and Brianna Herbaugh.

HERMAN SARFINO
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Herman "Nat" Sarfino, 68, of the Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, Md., formerly of Piedmont, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Sept. 4, 1929, in Piedmont, he was the son of the late Nazzino and Olga (Ferri) Sarfino.
Mr. Sarfino was self-employed as the owner of the G&H; Grocery Store in Piedmont. He was Pentecostal by faith.
Surviving are two brothers, Joseph Sarfino and wife Pam, Westernport, Md., and Louis Sarfino; two sisters, Rosie Plum and husband Lawrence, New Creek, and Betty Rice and husband Arthur, Cumberland.
At. Mr. Sarfino's request, the body will be cremated and graveside services will be held at a later date.
The Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, is in charge of arrangements.
WILMA S. SCHAEFFER
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Wilma S. Schaeffer, age 83, of Petersburg, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at the Grant County Nursing Home where she had resided since Feb. 23, 1998.
Born March 4, 1915, at Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late William A. Sites and Hazel (Ours) Sites.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Schaeffer, in 1968; and one sister, Wayne Taylor, on March 26, 1998.
Wilma was a graduate of Shepherd College and received her master's degree from West Virginia University. She taught school in Grant and Mineral counties for 42 years.
Wilma had lived in Keyser, but for the past three years she made her home in Petersburg. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Keyser and attended Memorial Church of the Brethren in Petersburg.
Surviving are one brother, Ralph W. Sites, Keyser; one nephew, W.C. "Sonny" Taylor, and wife, Carole, Petersburg; three great-nephews, Mark Taylor, Michael Taylor and Will Taylor, and families.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Raymer Cox officiating.
