GLADYS L. MATHIAS
AUGUSTA, W.Va. - Gladys Lee Mathias, 83, of Augusta, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Born Feb. 13, 1915, in Delray, she was the daughter of the late John Henry Lee and the late Lou Mamie Estella (Pyles) Lee. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Mathias, on Nov. 6, 1963; two sons, Garner Mathias, in 1983, and Victor Mathias, in 1955; three brothers; and three sisters.
Mrs. Mathias was a homemaker. She was a member of the Augusta Extension Homemakers.
Surviving are one daughter, Burma Omps, Augusta; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the McKee Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, June 5, 1998, at 2 p.m. with Daniel Stiltner, minister, officiating.
Burial will be in the Mount Zion cemetery, Augusta. Pallbearers will be Tommy Mathias, Lynn Mathias, Keith Mathias, Jeff Mathias, Vic Mathias and Vic Mathias III.
JOHN A. MATHIAS
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. - John A. Mathias, age 88, of Moorefield, passed away Friday morning Jan. 16, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born June 10, 1909, in Moorefield, he was the son of the late Agnus W. and Cora (May) Mathias. Besides his parents he also was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Elizabeth (Dasher) Mathias, on Sept. 19, 1996; and one brother, Virgil "Peg" Mathias.
Mr. Mathias was an educator in Moorefield for over 38 years, retiring in 1971 after 27 years as Principal of Moorefield High School. After retirement he served as the treasurer of the Moorefield High School Scholarship Fund. He was a devoted member of the Duffey United Methodist Church.
An athlete his entire life, he played on the Moorefield High School's first football team and later became their coach. He played first base on the WVU Mountaineers' baseball team. John graduated from WVU in 1933 with a bachelor of science degree, then returned later to earn a master's degree in Education. An avid golfer, he was a former club champion at the Valley View Golf Course and a lifelong supporter of athletics locally and at WVU.
Surviving are one brother, Stanley J. Mathias, Moorefield; three sons, Thomas G. Mathias and wife, Barbara, Moorefield, David K. Mathias, Old Fields, and John A. Mathias, Jr., and wife, Lora, Buckhannon, W.Va.; and eight grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home anytime after 8 a.m. Sunday. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral services will be on Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Duffey United Methodist Church with Pastor Ted Osgood officiating. Burial will follow at the Olivet cemetery, Moorefield.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to be made to the John A. Mathias Memorial Scholarship Fund, HC 66, Box 51, Moorefield, WV 26836.
VIRGINIA L. MATLICK
KEYSER, W.Va. - Virginia L. Matlick, 74, of Keyser, died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born March 9, 1923, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Myrtle (Summers) Hannas.
Mrs. Matlick was a retired nurses aide from Potomac Valley Hospital. She was a Baptist by faith.
Surviving are her husband, Curtis W. Matlick; one son, David W. Matlick and fiancee Penny L. Jones, Moorefield; one daughter, Vera E. Turner and husband Donald L., Keyser; two grandchildren, Dustin W. Matlick and Crystal Gail Turner; one brother, Edgar Hannas, Florida; a sister, Mary Ellen Pentland, Oregon; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Markwood McKenzie Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 10, 1998, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel E. Biser officiating.
CLAIRE E. MAY
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Claire Emily May, 88, of Fort Ashby, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at Lions Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born May 10, 1910, in Thomas, she was the daughter of the late George and Alice (Gross) Weaver. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Les" May. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. May was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Ashby. She served on the church board, and as past president of United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Fort Ashby Homemakers, as well as a charter member of the Fort Ashby Lioness Club.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald L. May and wife, Janet, Orlando, Fla., Richard D. May and wife Barbara, Fort Ashby; three grandsons, Ronald May and wife, Vickie, Boca Raton, Fla., Richard May Jr., Fort Ashby, Bryan S. May and wife, Terri, Fairmont; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Graveside services will be conducted at Fort Ashby cemetery on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dallas Forren officiating.

KENNETH P. MAYES
CARPENDALE, W.Va. - Kenneth Paige Mayes, 82, of Carpendale, Ridgeley, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Dawnview Manor Nursing Home, in Fort Ashby.
Born Dec. 14, 1915, in Shenandoah, Va., he was the son of the late Samuel A. and Etta Voit Mayes.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Louise Wilson Mayes.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.
He retired after 40 years of service from the Western Maryland Railway as a machinist.
He was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, Md. He also was a member of the Dixon Troxell American Legion, Funkstown Post #211. He was a life member of the Halfway Volunteer Fire Company and also the Interstate Coin Club.
He is survived by his second wife, Wreatha L. Phillips Mayes; one son, Richard P. Mayes, of Beverly; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Thomas A. Mayes.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Md.
Military graveside services will be conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post #42.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.
MARY E. MAYHEW
KEYSER, W.Va. - Mary E. Mayhew, 83, of Horseshoe Run Road, Keyser, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born on Jan. 23, 1915, at Greenland Gap, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late David Clinton Lough and Dorothy Katherine (Deremer) Lough Smith. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Everett F. Taylor on June 29, 1974, and by one daughter, Hazel Virginia Reddington.
Mrs. Mayhew was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Queens Point Memorial Post 6775, VFW, McCoole, and formerly attended the Assembly of God Church.
Surviving are her husband, Olan A. Mayhew; four daughters, Helen Ezzell and husband, Ronald, Beulaville, N.C.; Dottie Parish, Keyser, W.Va.; Margaret Haines, Westernport; Loretta Shuck and husband, Rick, Rawlings; five sons, Roy F. Taylor and wife, Sandy, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Richard Lee Taylor and wife, Carolyn, Lonaconing; David Allen Taylor and wife, Barbara, Lebanon, Pa.; Everett J. Taylor, Rawlings; Harvey L. Taylor, Keyser; four stepdaughters, Cora Copeland, Elk Garden, W.Va.; Betty Kitzmiller, Mount Storm, W.Va.; Patty Kitzmiller, Keyser; Debra Rhodes, Tennessee; one brother, Charles A. Smith, Rawlings; two sisters, Dorothy Ault, Keyser; Katherine Blizzard, Florida; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry Schloe officiating.
Interment will be at Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
