MARY C. DAVIS
MILAM, W.Va. - Mary Catherine (Crites) Davis, 90, of Milam, died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at the Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born Oct. 7, 1908, in Durgon, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Rose Alice (May) Crites. She also was preceded in death by her former husband, Clarence O. Atkinson, in 1980; three stepsons; eight sisters; and one brother. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her husband, Homer Davis, Grant County Nursing Home, formerly of Milam; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Jean Cullers, Moorefield, Mary Taylor and Mildred Atkinson, Cumberland, Md.; six stepsons, Homer Richard Davis Jr., Burlington, Harold E. Davis, Moorefield, John W. Davis, Germany, Holmes Atkinson, Harry Atkinson and Brook Atkinson, all of Cumberland; nine step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Davis formerly was co-owner and operator of Monty's Restaurant in Cumberland. She was a member of the Baker Chapel United Methodist Church.
Friends may call at the Elmore Chambers Funeral Home, Moorefield, anytime after 8 a.m. on Monday, and the family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home, Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ted Osgood officiating.
Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.

MELVIN E. DAWSON
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Melvin Edward Dawson, 83, of Ridgeley, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 9, 1915, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late King Edward and Ethel (Dayton) Dawson.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ellanora (Fair) Dawson, in 1993; and one brother, Robert Dawson.
Mr. Dawson was a 1931 graduate of Allegany High School.
He retired in 1977 from the Western Maryland Railway, where he had been a chief dispatcher.
Mr. Dawson was a life member of the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of their ambulance squad. He also belonged to Railroad Retired Employees Association, and was a Life Associate Member of the American Train Dispatchers Association.
Survivors include two sons, David Dawson, Circleville, Ohio, and Leroy Dawson, Ridgeley; one daughter, Diane Denzler, Fort Myers, Fla.; one sister, Evelyn Malas, Windber, Pa.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Paul E. Deitz officiating.
Active pallbearers will be Jay Kinsman, Jon Kinsman, Charles Hoffmaster, Randy Baer, Bud Jewell and Rocky Rhodes. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Barmoy, Robert Young and Ross Bittner.

NELLIE I. CARDER
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Nellie I. Carder, 73, of Short Gap, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit, Cumberland, Md.
Born May 24, 1924, in Levels, she was the daughter of the late John and Hattie (Saville) Brelsford. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Opal Hiett; and two brothers, Baker and Lloyd Brelsford.
Mrs. Carder was retired as a secretary for G.A. Largent and Associates of Cumberland. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Short Gap, and was a member of the United Methodist Women Association. Mrs. Carder was a member of the Rowlesburg Chapter #127 Order of the Eastern Star, and the Short Gap Senior Citizens Association.
Surviving are her husband, Alvin L. Carder; one daughter, Sandy Kenney, and husband, Ronnie, Fort Ashby; one son, Marshall L. Carder, and wife, Carol, Short Gap; three grandchildren, Edward L. Carder, and wife, Shelly, Short Gap; Scott Kenney, Fort Ashby; Krista Stakem, and husband, Keith, Grantsville, Md.; one brother, John Brelsford, and wife, Louise, Short Gap; two sisters-in-law, Mary Frances Brelsford, and Frances Mae Brelsford, both of Short Gap; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7 p.m. by the United Methodist Women Association, and at 7:30 p.m. by the McKinley Chapter #12 Order of the Eastern Star.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Charles L. Daniels officiating. Interment will be in Wesley Chapel cemetery, Points.
Family request contributions be made to the Short Gap Volunteer Fire Company.
CLARA B. EVANS
AUGUSTA, W.Va. - Clara B. Evans, 82, of Augusta, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at the Hampshire Memorial Long Term Care Unit.
Born June 11, 1916, in Ruckman, she was the daughter of the late Ashford Ruckman and Bertha Clyde (Bean) Ruckman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Evans, on Oct. 15, 1997; one brother, Walter Ruckman; one sister, Ida Tusing; and one grandson.
Mrs. Evans was a homemaker. She was a member of Christ Community Church, Augusta.
Surviving are two daughters, Vesta V. Bowman, Augusta, and Sylvia Jean Kibler, Front Royal, Va.; one son, Garland E. Evans, Stephens City, Va.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday, June 19, 1998, at 11 a.m. with Daniel Stiltner, minister, officiating.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Evans, Kenneth "Butch" Evans, Rodney Evans, Ronald Boyer, Richard Hott and Greg McCauley.

JAMES R. BURGESS
AUGUSTA, W.Va. - James Ralph Burgess, age 57, of Augusta, passed away Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney.
He was born on April 25, 1941, in Charlottesville, Va., the son of Ora E. (Lang) Burgess, South Hill, Va., and the late Clarence E. Burgess.
Mr. Burgess was the retired Superintendent for the Virginia Department of Highways. He was a former member of the National Guard during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and he had fought numerous forest fires during his enlistment.
Along with his mother, he is survived by his wife Joan C. Ankers; one son, Jonathan E. Burgess, and wife, Margaret, Augusta; one daughter, Valerie A. Fasching, and husband, Brian, Augusta; two brothers, Herbert "Pete" Burgess, Augusta, John T. "Johnny" Burgess, Manassas, Va.; one sister, Emma Sprouse, South Hill; two grandsons, Jonathan C. Burgess and Curtis R. Fasching.
The family will receive friends at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Fout officiating.
