DAVID C. OATES
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - David C. Oates, 48, of Petersburg, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at the home of his mother, Charlotte H. Oates Rohrbaugh, in Petersburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 14, 1951, in Cumberland, he was the son of Charlotte (Hamstead) Oates Rohrbaugh and the late Olin Richard Oates, Sr. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles V. Oates.
Mr. Oates attend Hargrave Military Academy, Chatham, Va., for four years and graduated from Petersburg High School, in 1970. He is a graduate of Pensacola Junior College, Pensacola, Fla. He had been affiliated with his family businesses, the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company, Oates TV and Canaan Valley Resorts, Davis, W.Va. He was a member of Petersburg Presbyterian Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his stepfather, Brooke L. Rohrbaugh, a resident of Grant County Nursing Home, Petersburg; one son, David Cameron Oates, II, at home; two daughters, Danielle Leah Oates, at home; Charlotte Vossler Oates, at home; one brother, Arthur R. Oates, of Pensacola, Fla.; four half sisters, Phyllis D. Smith, Petersburg, Norma Lee, Waynesboro, Va., Carolyn Riggleman, Stephen City, Va., Elizabeth Smith, Norfolk, Va.; and three half brothers, Olin Richard Oates, Jr., Petersburg, Gerald J. Oates, Keyser, W.Va., Joseph K. Oates, Plain City, Ohio.
Visitation will be at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Charles C. Snyder and the Rev. Michael D. Snyder, officiating.
ANNA NEWHOUSE
WILEY FORD, W.Va. - Anna Newhouse, 86, of Wiley Ford, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
She was born May 14, 1912, a daughter of the late Nimrod and Sarah Jane Whitehair Hart.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Flemington Baptist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Vivian Newhouse, Wiley Ford, Mary Saylor, Rockport, and Lillian Kyle, Flemington; one son, Samuel S. Newhouse, Keyser; two sisters, Hazel Workman, Grafton, and Evelyn McDonough, Flemington; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one step great-granddaughter; and one step great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Samual Newhouse; two brothers, Earl Hart and Howard Hart; six sisters, Mary Workman, Madge Fry, Bertha Baker and three infant sisters.
Friends may call at the William McCulla Funeral Home, Westover, on Monday, Feb. 15, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bennie Moran officiating.
ROBERT Y. NEWELL JR.
AUGUSTA, W.Va. - Robert Yates "Gandy" Newell Jr., 101, of HC 78, Box 100, Augusta, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Born Nov. 27, 1898, in Newellton, La., he was the son of the late Robert Yates Newell Sr. and Bessie Young Newell. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Hilliard Newell on Dec. 17, 1971; one daughter, Robin Mason Newell Byrnes; and two sisters, Bessie Young Newell and Rebecca Newell Duddleston.
Mr. Newell was a marine engineer with the U.S. Government Maritime Commission, retiring in 1963 after 24 years of service. He previously worked as a sugar chemist in Cuba from 1920-1930. He served as past Chairman of the Trial Board of the Maritime Commission. He attended both Louisiana State and George Washington Universities. He was a Christian and of the Episcopal denomination. He was a veteran of World War I, having served in the United States Army as a first lieutenant.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret "Peggy Mac" Miller Newell whom he married
on May 8, 1972; one son, Robert Yates Newell III, Reston, Va.; three stepchildren, David Gainer, Springfield, Va., Joseph Gainer, Falls Church, Va., and Louisa Gainer Bridges, Winchester, Va.; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edward Dunbar Newell, Cape Coral, Fla.
A memorial service will be conducted at the St. Paul's on the Hill Episcopal Church on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Mohn officiating.
Local arrangements are being handled by the Omps Funeral Home, Winchester, Va.
MARGARET NELSON
PETERSBURG, W.Va. - Margaret "Peggy" (Phillips) Nelson, 82, of Petersburg, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 1999, at the Grant County Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 28, 1917, in Tucker County, she was the daughter of the late Richard Coleman and Dolly (Losh) Phillips. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Nelson Sr. on Oct. 2, 1991; two sisters, Annie and Pearl Phillips; and three brothers, Clyde, Delbert and Harry Phillips. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Nelson moved to Petersburg in 1984 from Detroit, Mich. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Dennis Foutz, Libby, Mont.; one grandson; one great-grandson; one sister-in-law, Margaret B. Phillips, Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews, including Nan and Buddy Kesner, Petersburg.
Graveside services will be conducted at the Rose Hill cemetery, Thomas, on Monday at 10 a.m., and a Memorial service will be conducted at the Main Street United Methodist Church on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John E. Wildman officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church or the Grant County Nursing Home.
RAYMOND A. PENNINGTON
ELK GARDEN, W.Va. - Raymond Asher Pennington, 63, of Baltimore, formerly of Elk Garden, died Friday, April 9, 1999, at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born Feb. 18, 1936, in Parsons, W.Va., he was a son of the late Doyle and Hester (Bonner) Pennington.
Mr. Pennington was a retired painter and a U.S. Army veteran of Korea.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy June (Via) Pennington; four sons, Steve, Jeff, Curtis and Eric Pennington, all of Baltimore; one daughter, Lorie Pennington, Baltimore; three brothers, Otto Pennington, Elkins, Jim Pennington, Elk Garden, and Edward Pennington, Swanton; three sisters, Sandra Oster, Hamilton, W.Va., Barbara McClain, Hamilton, and Terri Dixon, Oregon; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The body is at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating.
RILEY B. PAYNE
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Riley B. Payne, 69, of Ridgeley, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Sept. 3, 1930, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Riley B. Payne, Sr., and Mildred (Hough) Payne.
Mr. Payne was a retired assistant manager for Peoples Security Insurance. He was a 1949 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He was a member of Graceland Baptist Church, the Cumberland Moose, and a social member of the Fort Ashby VFW.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara L. Payne; his step-mother, Lena Payne, Baker, W.Va.; one son, Keith Riley Payne and wife, Anne, Charlottesville, Va.; one daughter, Candi Payne May and husband, Peter, Midlothian, Va.; one sister, Mary Courtney, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Megan and Michael Payne, Jessica and Christopher May.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral and Interment services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Baugh, officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Pallbearers will be Tim Michael, Craig Courtney, Jim Bone, Dave Welker, Dave Savaliski, and Danny Lynch. Honorary pallbearers, will be Lorrin Boyce and Paul Davis.
