CATHERINE HANLIN
SCHERR, W.Va. - Lena Catherine Hanlin, 88, of Scherr, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg.
Born March 6, 1911, in Maysville, she was the daughter of the late Albert F. and Angie (Smith) Hesse. She also was preceded in death by one granddaughter; three brothers, and two sisters.
Mrs. Hanlin graduated from Saint John's Academy and Shepherd College, and taught school in Grant county for 26 years. She was a member of the Davis Baptist Church, Maysville.
Surviving are her husband, Clyde D. Hanlin, whom she married
on Nov. 2, 1940; one daughter, Angie L. Idleman and husband Robert Dale, Scherr; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Idleman, Perrysburg, Ohio, and Mary Simmons and husband Garry, Maysville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Schaeffer Funeral Home Inc., 11 North Main Street, Petersburg, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Davis Baptist Church, Maysville, Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Donaldson and Pastor Robert Spaid officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Davis Baptist Church or charity of choice.
RUBY M. HAPNEY
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Ruby Merle (Williams) Hapney, 83, of Ridgeley, died Monday evening, March 29, 1999, at Memorial Hospital. She had been in her usual health, and death was unexpected.
Born April 9, 1915, in Tucker County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Roby and Verna M. (Hebb) Williams.
On Feb. 5, 1938, she married
Roy Emil "Trub" Hapney, who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1987. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie J. Williams and Elsie M. Williams; and four brothers, Benjamin W. Williams, Simon Cecil Williams, Roy F. Williams and Ray R. Williams.
Mrs. Hapney attended the schools of Tucker County.
She was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Parsons and husband, Jared, Parsons, W.Va., and Linda Lambert and husband, John, Ridgeley; two sons, Roy E. Hapney Jr. and wife, Linda, and John L. Hapney, all of Ridgeley; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Parsons, Fort Ashby.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The body will then be taken to the Barb/Greenlief Funeral Home, 312 Main St., Parsons, W.Va., where friends will be received on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steven Rhodes officiating.
ALTA M. HARPER
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Alta M. Harper, 82, of Ontario, Calif., formerly of Ridgeley, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Heritage Hospital, Cucamonga, Calif.
Born in Ashton, S.D., she was the daughter of the late Wesley Hamilton and Mrs. Myrtle Bowman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Harper; three brothers; and one daughter, Shirley Weddle of Florida.
Surviving are one son, James L. Shaw, Ontario; three sisters, Ruth G. Bowers of Missouri, Elizabeth Knisley of Maryland and Pearl Ardinger of Salinas, Calif.; one brother, Robert Hamilton of Tennessee; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The Draper Mortuary, Ontario, is in charge of arrangements.
Graveside services will be held March 8 at 1 p.m. at the Bellevue cemetery, Ontario.
JOSEPH S. HARRIS
NEW CREEK, W.Va. - Joseph Scott Harris, 96, of HC 75, Box 178, New Creek, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, at his residence.
Born on April 1, 1903, at Martin, W.Va., he was a son of the late Benton and Maranda (George) Harris. He was also preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; and one grandson.
Mr. Harris retired from the Street Department of the City of Keyser after 11 years of service. Prior to that he had been employed by the West Virginia Department of Highways. Mr. Harris was Brethren by faith.
Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Beatrice (Coffman) Harris; five sons, Alvie Joseph Harris, Cumberland, Willard Lee Harris, New Creek, Guy Andrew Harris and wife, Sarah, New Creek, James Ernest Harris and companion, Angel, Romney, Ted Ivan Harris and wife, Gail, Keyser; one daughter, Genevieve ``Ginny" Bittinger and husband, Carl ``Buck," Barton, Md.; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. George R. Loar officiating.
MAIZIE A. KITZMILLER
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Maizie A. Kitzmiller, 88, formerly of 29 Second St., Piedmont, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at the Moran Manor Nursing Home, where she had been a resident.
Born Feb. 12, 1911, Hartmansville, she was a daughter of the late Wayman and Cora (Lewis) Kitzmiller. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William McNemar, in 1945.
Mrs. Kitzmiller was a beautician for 50 years and also managed the Piedmont Hotel. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont, and a former member of the Tri-Towns Optimist Club.
Surviving are a sister, Virgie Hanlin, Gormania, several nieces and nephews and a special niece who took care of her, Dixie Brinkman, Cumberland, Md.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating.
Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows I.O.O.F. cemetery, Elk Garden.
SHIRLEY L. HARSH
AURORA, W.Va. - Shirley L. Harsh, 59, of Aurora, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md.
Born on May 8, 1939, in Red Oak, Md., she was the daughter of the late James L. and Sylvia M. (Rinehart) Childs. She was preceded in death by one step-brother, Willard G. Teets.
She was a member of the Brookside Church of the Brethren, Aurora.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde A. Harsh; three daughters, Bonnie S. Friend, Connie A. Harsh, and Naomi F. Harsh, all of Aurora; one son, Willard L. ``Mike" Harsh, Aurora; one sister, Winona Lewis, Oakland, Md.; three brothers, Forrest Childs, Rupert, Arthur Childs, Oakland, and Roy Childs, Florida; her mother-in-law, Viola Harsh; two grandchildren; three step-sisters; two step-brothers; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Maple Springs Church of the Brethren on Monday at 11 a.m., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Donnie Knotts, the Rev. Charles Teets, and the Rev. John Crowe will officiate.
