JAMES W. DAWSON
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - James W. Dawson, 35, of Ridgeley, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Nov. 9, 1963, in Cumberland, he was the son of Mrs. Carol L. (Merkel) Dawson and the late Edward D. Dawson.
Mr. Dawson was a Rural Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and a member of the Cumberland Republican Club.
Surviving in addition to his mother are one daughter, Jennifer Dawson, Cumberland; two sons, James Dawson and John Dawson, both of Cumberland; one brother, Edward D. Dawson Jr., Carpendale; lifelong friend, Michael Shaffer, Alexandria, Va.; and paternal grandmother, Pearl Ecker, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Randall Larry and the Rev. Scott Sommers officiating.
REV. WILLIAM W. DAVIS
KEYSER, W.Va. - The Rev. William Wayne Davis, 70, of 119 S. Main St., Keyser, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Dec. 22, 1928, at Charleroi, Pa., he was a son of the late James Clair and Ruth (Cooper) Davis.
Rev. Davis retired in 1994 with 16 years as Rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Westernport, Md. Before that he was Rector of the Church of the Advent, Jeannette, Pa., and Rector of St. Peter's in Oakland, Pa. and he was also Rector of St. Mary's Church in St. Mary's, Pa. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Keyser. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was a graduate of LaFayette College, Pa., and a graduate of the Philadelphia Divinity School. He was a mechanical engineer for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, Pa. He worked with the Allegany County Human Resources, was Secretary/Treasurer of the Tri-Towns Rotary Club, and was a member of the Tri-Towns Ministerium. He also served two years on the Westernport Town Council and served on various boards in the community. He was a member of Victory Post #155 American Legion.
Rev. Davis is survived by his wife, Beverly (White) Davis; one son, Alan Davis and wife, Karen, Lorain, Ohio; one daughter, Laura Callesen and husband, Michael, Columbia Station, Ohio; a brother, James C. Davis and wife, Lois, Birmingham, Ala.; a sister, Anna Maude Nelson and husband, Paul, Media, Pa.; a mother-in-law, Dessie White, Heartland of Keyser; a sister-in-law, Anita Johnson, Keyser; a brother-in-law, Dorsey White and wife, Elizabeth, Ashburn, Va.; four grandchildren, Michael, Robbie, Natalie and Madison; and two step-grandchildren, Dana and Lindsey.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Litany will be recited on Wednesday evening at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home by the Rev. Judson Pealer.
Celebration of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Westernport, with the RT. Rev. Robert Ihloff, Bishop of Maryland, as celebrant, assisted by the Rev. Patrick Pierce, the Rev. Judson Pealer, the Rev. Terrance Johnson and the Rev. Dallas Shaffer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Emmanual Episcopal Church, Keyser.
JOHN E. GRIMES
SHORT GAP, W.Va. - John Erik Grimes, 29, of Short Gap, died Sunday, June 13, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 26, 1970, in Cumberland, he was the son of Patricia L. (Price) Grimes, Short Gap, and the late John E. Grimes. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Richard Edwards, and paternal grandmother, Betty (Weaver) Edwards.
Mr. Grimes was an employee of Unitel. He was an avid hunter and a 1988 graduate of Frankfort High School.
In addition to his mother, surviving are two brothers, Sean C. Grimes and wife Tracie, Short Gap, and Todd J. Grimes and wife Autumn, Short Gap; maternal grandmother, Pat Price, Lonaconing; one niece, Morgan Grimes, Short Gap; three uncles, Richard, George and Donald Edwards, and one aunt, Becky Edwards, all of the immediate area; and several cousins.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Edward C. Chapman officiating.
ZELLA F. DAVIS
PIEDMONT, W.Va. - Zella Ferguson Davis, 86, of 114 W. Hampshire St., Piedmont, died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Oct. 8, 1912, at Keyser, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Roderick. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde Ferguson and Donald H. Davis; one daughter, Lois Adwell; one son, Harold J. Davis; and one sister, Frances "Johnnie" Biddle.
Surviving are two daughters, Toni Dyer, Frederick, Md., and Norma Miller, Frostburg, Md.; one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Sandra Ferguson, Piedmont; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Roderick, Piedmont, and Bennett Roderick, Keyser; one sister-in-law, Nina Daniels, Moorefield; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., on Saturday, March 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating.
Pallbearers will be Gilbert Dyer, Martin Dyer, Richard Adwell, Tim Adwell, Don Ferguson III, and Andrew Campbell.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, Cumberland.
PHYLLIS A. GRAPES
ROMNEY, W.Va. - Phyllis Ann Grapes, 58, of Romney, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at the Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born May 9, 1940, in Springfield, she was the daughter of Elsie Didawick Bergdoll of Romney and the late Willard E. Bergdoll.
Mrs. Grapes was a member of the Romney Christian Church, Romney.
Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Kelley Grapes Pulley and husband Wallace, Stuarts Draft, Va., and Paula J. Stauf and husband Alex, Romney; one brother, Willard ``Bill" Bergdoll and wife Peggy, Romney; two sisters, Patricia Gayle Bergdoll, Romney, and Linda K. Hill and husband Steve, Evans, W.Va.; and five grandchildren, Eric Scott Pulley, Brianna R. Bean, Trenton P. Bean, Trevor T. Stauf and Kimberly E. Stauf.
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral will be Saturday, May 1, at 1 p.m. at the Romney Christian Church with Dewitt Clinton, minister, officiating.
The body will be taken to the church at noon to lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the Romney Christian Church.
GLADYS E. FLANAGAN
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Gladys Evelyn Flanagan, 74, of Fort Ashby, died Friday, July 16, 1999, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 27, 1925, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Valentine and Virginia (Bridges) Valentine Mortsefelt.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Stewart Ollie Flanagan; four sons, Stewart Flanagan Jr. and wife Linda, Carpendale, Gary Flanagan and wife Cathy, Fort Ashby, Pat Flanagan and fiancee Darlene Bradshaw, Ridgeley, and David Flanagan and wife Kaye, Romney; three daughters, Dorothy Garland and husband Gary, Ridgeley, Donna Miltenberger and husband Tim, Fort Ashby, and Virginia Cooper and husband Teddy, Lovettsville, Va.; one brother, Kenneth Valentine, Cumberland; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home Inc., Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 19, 1999, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Scott Uhlenhopp officiating.
