John A. Walker, Jr., 70 of Chapel Hill, NC formerly of Romney, WV died June 20, 2004 at Vero Beach, FL.
John A. Walker, Jr., husband, father, sailor, officer, chief executive and coach died June 20, 2004. Born in Philadelphia, September 26, 1933 he was the son of Carol Scanlon and John Alexander Walker. Captain Walker (U.S. Navy, retired) graduated from Germantown Academy (1951), Princeton University (1955) and earned his MBA at the University of North Carolina (1980). His distinguished military career included Captain of the USS Gray, service in the Royal Canadian Navy, two tours in Viet Nam and Director of Operations Sixth Fleet. He was the founder and President of 501 Management, Inc., providing complete administrative services for not-for-profit organizations. Numerous volunteer positions include work with United Way and Landmark Education.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Day Walker of Chapel Hill, NC, sons John III of Durham, NC and Timothy of Chapel Hill, NC; daughters, Kristi of Hoboken, NJ and Melissa of Brooklyn, NY and grandchildren Thomas and Barbara.
An interment service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at Branch Mountain cemetery, Three Churches, WV.

DIANNA LOU SHOEMAKER
Dianna Lou Shoemaker, 56, of Augusta, WV died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, VA.
Born September 17, 1947 in Winchester, VA to J. Roscoe Tutwiler of Augusta and the late Vivian (Speelman) Tutwiler.
Dianna was retired from the Hampshire County Board of Education. She was the head cook and cafeteria manager of the Augusta Elementary School. She was a member of the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association.
She was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Augusta where she served on the Pastor Parrish Relations Committee and served as church treasurer for several years. She was also a member of the Hampshire County Republican Executive Committee and was a member of the first graduating class of Hampshire High School in 1965.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, J. Roscoe and Jean (Haines) Tutwiler, Augusta; son, Leslie J. Shoemaker, Jr. and wife, Susan R. of Augusta; twins, Scott M. Shoemaker and friend, Sandra Chenoweth of Winchester, VA and Stacy L. Hill and husband, Scott of Augusta; two s isters, Sharon Colebank and husband Lyle of Augusta, Karen Hott and husband, Allen of Augusta; two stepsisters, Mary Jo Rinker of Romney, and Pam Traylor, Forrest City, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Heather Hill, Courtney Hill, Logan Hill, Jonathan Hill, and Zachary Hill and Mollie Shoemaker; former husband, Leslie J. Shoemaker, Sr., Romney, WV.
Friends will be recieved at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney, Wednesday, June 23, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Services will be held at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Augusta, Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 11 a.m. where friends will be received at 10 a.m., one hour prior to the service. Pastor Charlotte Wood and Pastor Edward Martin will preside the services.
Internment will be at the Mt. Zion cemetery, Augusta.

Alma Louise Liller, 73, of Burlington, WV, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD.
Born on October 15, 1930 in Burlington, WV to the late Garner H. and Stella (Dawson) McDonald.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bucy Clary Liller, December, 1985.
Mrs. Liller was a retired house parent with the West Virginia School for the Deaf, Romney.
She was a member of the Beaver Run Church of the Brethren, Burlington and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Alkire Chapter 10, Keyser.
She is survived by one son, Michael B. Liller and his wife, Mary Ann of Burlington; two sisters, Margaret Dean of Temple Hills, MD and Clara Walker of Richmond, VA; thre grandchildren - Michelle Ludwick of Romney, Tara Liller of Romney and Adam Liller of Romney; and one great-granddaughter, Jordan Ludwick.
Friends will be received on Friday, June 25, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Shaffer-Warnick Funeral Home, Romney where the Order of Eastern Star, Alkire Chapter 10 will conduct a-a service at 7 pm.

GERALDINE "PEGGY" SEEDERS
Geraldine "Peggy" Seeders, 94, of Dawn View Manor, Ft. Ashby, WV formerly of Green Spring, WV died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney, WV.
She was born March 23, 1910 in Mill Creek, Randolph County, WV and was the daughter of the late Berl and Rose Herron. She is preceded in death by her husband Clarence Seeders and son Jennings Kesner.
Mrs. Seeders was a housewife.
She leaves behind a son, Harold "Buck" Hyson, Springfield, WV, two daughters, Thelma Smith, Martinsburg, WV, and Marlene Hyson, Green Spring, WV, twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

MANNING HOLLAND WILLIAMS
Manning Holland Williams, 89, of Romney, WV, died Saturday, June 26, 2004 at Hampshire Long Term Care, Romney, WV.
Manning Holland Williams was born in Romney, West Virginia on July 7, 1914. He was the oldest child of William Marvin Williams and Lula Hart Taylor Williams. Mr. William's great-great-grandfather settled in Hampshire County, near Junction, in the late 1700's.
Mr. Williams graduated from Romney High School in 1931. He was captain of Romney's first basketball team. Mr. Williams graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1934. He was editor of the college newspaper, the Ring Tum Fi, and received Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. He worked his way to Europe on a cattle boat in 1935 and studied at Heidelberg University in Germany for a year.
He worked as a reporter for the Beacon Journal in Akron, Ohio, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Cumberland (MD) Evening Times. His dream to become a small town newspaper editor was interrupted by Second World War. Mr. Williams enlisted in the Navy and saw combat in the South Pacific as beachmaster for an LST. He reached the rank of Lieutenant and was awarded the Bronze Star.
Mr. Williams married
Mary Kathleen Zollman shortly before going off to war. They reunited at the war's end and studied Russian at the Navy Language School. Mr. Williams entered government service and was posted at the American Embassy in Moscow and then with Allied High Command in Berlin. He then worked for Radio Liberty (of the Voice of America) in Munich, Germany and started the journal Problems of Communism. He and his family returned to Washington, D.C. in 1956 where he continued in government service as a member of the National Security Council. In 1963 he transferred to NASA and was part of the effort to land the first man on the moon. Throughout his government service, Mr. Williams used his talents as a journalist.
Mr. Williams retired to Romney, where he spent the rest of his life. He loved the outdoors. He was one of the pioneering skiers in the MD/PA area, and in his teenage years canoed the Potomac from Romney to Washington with his friend David Harmison. Mr. Williams worked with The Nature Conservancy to preserve West Virginia's natural heritage. He was very interested in Romney's history, especially during the Civil War. His father's father and his mother's uncles rode with the Virginia Calvary. He restored the Mytinger House, Romney's oldest dwelling, and was a source of stories about family and Romney history.
His wife, his son Eugene, his daughter Annski, granddaughters Summer and Briton, his brother Charles and many cousins in the Romney area survive Mr. Williams. His sister Lenora Overmyer preceded him in death.
Private graveside services were held on Sunday, June 27, 2004. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be decided by the family.

JEAN TAYLOR RANNELLS SINGER
Jean Taylor Rannells Singer, 95, of Romney, WV went to be with her Lord on July 12, 2004 at Dawn View Center, Ft. Ashby, WV.
Born on May 15, 1909 near Three Churches , WV to the late E. Frank and Kathryn (Rannells ) Taylor.
Preceded in death by her 1st husband of 36 years, William B. Rannells and her second of 10 years, Darius Singer; two brothers: Lynn Taylor and Ward Taylor; and two sisters, Virginia Thomas and Louise Widner.
Mrs. Singer was a 1934 graduate of the Cumberland Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at Cumberland Memorial Hospital and Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney. Mrs. Singer was an early aviator in the Cumberland area, flying solo out of the old Mexico Farms Airport in the late l930’s.
Mrs. Singer was a 60 year member of the Romney First United Methodist Church where she was a Bible school teacher and youth program volunteer. She was a 59 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Romney Chapter #84 having been iniated on May 24, 1945. Mrs. Singer volunteered as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She volunteered for the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and other community fundraisers.
She is survived by one son Douglas Rannells, and wife, Sandy, Springfield, WV with whom Mrs. Singer made her home; one daughter, Trudy Seita, and husband, Dr. Charles Seita, Vienna, WV; two grandchildren, Kathryn Lengyel, Dallas, Texas, and Chip Seita, Charleston, SC; four great-grandchildren, Sarah, Alex, and Ryan Lengyel and Chandler Seita and Several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Order of Eastern Star Romney Chapter #84 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wedesday at the Shaffer Funeral Home.
Services will be held Thursday, July 15, 2004 at 11 a.m. at the Romney First United Methodist Church . The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. The Rev. Douglas N. Shepherd will preside.
Internment will be at the Indian Mound cemetery, Romney, WV.
Memorials may be made to the Romney First United Methodist Church or the charity of choice.

Shirley Joan Barbee, 76, of Romney, WV died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Hampshire Health Care, Romney, WV.
Born August 5, 1927 in Mattoon, Illinois to the late Roy and Mildred (Gentry). Ward.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Andrew F. "Hank" Barbee and grandson, Jason M. Whitacre.
Mrs. Barbee was a housewife and helped in raising her grandchildren.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 2511 in Charleston, Illinois.
She is survived by daughter, Connie Blackburn and husband Bill of Augusta, WV; granddaughter, Megan Shoemaker and husband Neal of Romney and three great-grandchildren, Dylan Bowman, Taylor Shoemaker and Lakin Shoemaker.

Joseph Edward "Joe Eddie" Corbin, Sr., 66, of Romney, WV died Monday, July 26, 2004 at his residence.
Born December 19, 1937 in Romney to the late Albert Woodrow Corbin, Sr. and the late Bertha (Beatty) Corbin.
In addition to his parents, two brothers preceded him indeath.
Joe Eddie loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to watch his grandchildren participate in athletics. Mr. Corbin was a supervisor with Corbin Electric, Romney and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was Pentecostal by faith.
Survivors include his loving companion of over twenty years, Brenda Buckbee of Romney; one son, Joseph Edward "Jody" Corbin, Jr. of Romney; one special nephew, Michael Corbin of Romney; five brothers, Roger Corbin of Romney, Albert W. Corbin of Hagerstown, MD, Julian Corbin of Arlington, VA, Roger Manning of Romney and Randall Manning of Romney; four sisters, Joyce Patterson of Burlington, WV, Donna Corbin Wolford of Romney, Ione Manning of Romney, Constance Reinsinger of Shippensburg, PA; and five grandchildren.

Roberta Gynelle Long, 56, of Springfield, WV died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, MD.
Born December 8, 1947 in Romney, WV. She is the daughter of Gyneth Merritt Raines of Romney.
She is preceded in death by one sister Avis G. McKinney.
Mrs. Long was a member of the Community Bible Assembly of God Church, Romney. She was a homemaker and was formerly employed at Hampshire Memorial Hospital, Romney in the laundry room.
In addition to her Mother she is survived by her husband Daniel Alexander Long of Springfield; one son Barry Long of Springfield; one daughter Shana Long Benson of Springfield; three brothers Gary L. Merritt of Ft. Ashby, WV, Gamiel C. Raines of North Carolina and Garon E. Raines of Great Falls, Montana; five sisters Stephanie G. Wolford of Romney, Alana G. Noble of The Plains, Ohio, Ganette M. Ganoe of Romney, Margie G. Fowler of Cocoa, FL and Deborah G. Massie of Winchester, VA; two grandsons one step-granddaughter, one step-great-grandson, 19 nieces and nephews and 18 great nieces and nephews.
