Elsie Mae Taylor, 76, of North Tazewell, VA, died April 9, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Panther, WV, she was a daughter of the late James Franklin Rose and Dove Alice Cline Rose.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Daniel Young; one sister, Gracie Rose Raines; and two brothers, Jesse James Rose and Harrison Rose. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: husband, Reese Taylor, Jr.; daughters, Brenda K. Kennedy and husband, Archie, of Iaeger, WV, Betty Young and husband, Luther, of North Tazewell; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 11 at 2 p.m. in the Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Darrell Sutherland officiating.
Burial followed at the Taylor Family cemetery in Dry Fork.
Inez M. Hale
Inez Magdalene Hardy Hale, 57, of Squire, WV, died at her home March 30, 2004 following a lengthy illness.
Born at Squire, she was a daughter of Beatrice Hardy of Squire and the late Patrick Hardy.
She had made her home at Squire her entire life. She was a graduate of Big Creek High School. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Squire Freewill Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Raymond W. Hale, Sr.
In addition to her husband and father, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly James; one son, Raymond W. Hale, Jr.; and one infant sister, Patricia Ann.
Survivors: son, David Patrick Hale and wife, Paula, of Warriormines, WV; daughter-in-law, Sherry Hale of Baptist Valley; sisters, Mrs. Steven (Patsy) Payne of War, WV, Mrs. Rick (Pam) Patton of Wytheville; brother, Ron Hardy of Canebrake, WV; grandchildren, Raymond W. Hale, III, Kayla Hale, Brian James, Jr. and David Paul Hale; special friends, Dorothy and Doris; and special neighbors, Fern Whitt and Pauline Sparks.
The funeral was conducted April 3 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Rick Patton and Rev. Wilburn Muncy officiating.
Interment followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Joseph Melvin Quesenberry
Joseph Melvin Quesenberry, 90, of Newhall, WV, died April 1, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley, WV.
Born in Pounding Mill, he was a son of the late James and Alice Caldwell Quesenberry.
He was a US Army Veteran serving in the South Pacific Theatre during World War, II. He was a member of the Springs of Life Tabernacle in Newhall, WV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Ruth Sampson Quesenberry, and one daughter, Tammy Starr Horn.
Survivors: son, Joseph S. Quesenberry of Newhall; daughters, Wanda Hardy and husband, Tony, and Alice Sykes and husband, Daniel, all of Jacksonville, FL; son-in-law, Ray Horn of English, WV; sister, Anna Pennington of Lebanon; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted April 6 at 1 p.m. at the Springs of Life Tabernacle in Newhall with Sister Mary Osborne officiating.
Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV.

Hester M. Copley
Hester Marie Goad Copley, of Bluefield, VA, died March 26, 2004 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Bluefield, WV, to Coy and Ruth Goad.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one younger sister, Sheila Goad.
She graduated from Bluefield High School in 1950. The bulk of her working years was spent at Aratex, from where she retired in 1995 after 24 years of service. She grew up attending Calvary Baptist Church, belonged to Edgemont Baptist Church for a few years and was a faithful member of Parkview Baptist Church for the last 32 yeas, always attending Sunday School and singing in the choir. She was a talented seamstress and a good cook and baker. She enjoyed sitting with Don and watching the world go by, whether it was under an umbrella at Myrtle Beach or on the front porch of their home in Pine Hill Park. She will be greatly missed by her family and her church friends and neighbors, many of whom were practically family.
Survivors: best friend and husband, of 48 years, Donald C. Copley; their three children, Steven Copley and wife, Nancy, of Winston-Salem, NC, Donna Copley and partner, Janet Inwood, of Chesterfield, Michael Copley of Bluefield; sisters, June Hill and husband, John, of Bluefield, WV, Carol Granger and husband, Chuck, of Graham, NC; brother, Rev. Clinton Goad and wife, Shirley, of Blountville, TN; sisters-in-law, Pat C. Odell and Carol C. Martin and husband, Ray; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral was conducted March 29 at 2 p.m. in Parkview Baptist Church with Rev. Travis Hilton officiating.

May M. Earnest
May Maxwell Johnson Earnest, 99, of Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Tazewell and formerly of Wrights Valley, Bluefield, VA, died March 22, 2004 in a Tazewell hospital.
Born May 31, 1904 in Crumpler, WV, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Bailey Maxwell and Louise Belle Maxwell.
She was a nurse, having graduated from Bluefield School of Nursing in 1929 and worked in Grundy and Welch hospital as a nurse. She retired in 1965 as an office nurse for Dr. Johnston and Dr. Brittain at Jeffersonville Hospital in Tazewell. She attended church at the Wrights Valley and Ebenezer United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, C.H. Johnson and Harry Earnest; five sisters; three brothers; and one grandson, Timothy Knox Johnson. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: sons, C.H. "Snookie" Johnson and wife, Sara, of Bluewell, WV, Dallas M. "Buster" Johnson and wife, Judy, of Bluefield, VA; granddaughter, Mary Beth Price and husband, Lawrence, of Bluefield, VA; grandson, Todd Johnson of Cornelius, NC; great-grandson, Justin Price; niece, Deborah Webb of Bluefield, WV; and several other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at the Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA, March 25 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Reid officiating.

Joseph Hankins, Jr.
Joseph Hankins, Jr., 76, of North Tazewell, died March 23, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Yukon, WV, he was a son of the late Joseph Hankins, Sr. and Sara Brooks Hankins.
He was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church at Bishop. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, a member of the United Auto Workers Local #856 in Akron, OH, and a former member of the United Mine Workers of America.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Holstein Hankins.

James Lee Spurrier
James Lee Spurrier, 39, of North Tazewell, died March 26, 2004 at his home.
Born March 5, 1965 in Bluefield, WV, he was a son of Marjorie Dalton Spurrier of North Tazewell and the late Joe Lewis Spurrier.
He was a charter member of the Tazewell Moose Lodge.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph "Jay" Spurrier and Lewis Benton Spurrier.

Burgess "Bud" Cline
Burgess "Bud" Cline, 79, of North Tazewell, VA, died March 22, 2004 at a Tazewell hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born at War Eagle, WV, he was a son of the late Lou Birgis Cline and Ella Morrow Cline, Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home at North Tazewell for the past 18 years. He was retired from Chrysler Motor Co. He was a member of the United Auto Workers.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors: wife, Spicy May McGraw Cline; daughter, Brenda Sue Shockley of Newark, DE; son, Thurman Lee Cline and wife, Suzanna of North East, MD; sister, Helen Hann of Haysi, Pearl Lester of Martinsville; brother, Eugene Cline of Tazewell; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many friends and family.
The funeral will be conducted March 25 at 11 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Dewey Duff and Rev. Henry Rowe officiating.
Interment will follow at Mountain Valley Memorial cemetery in Big Rock.

Mae L. White
Mae Louise Glick White, 79, of Whitewood, VA, died March 18, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Athens, WV, she was the daughter of the late Russell Newman and Kate Hall Glick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Waldon White, and one daughter, Wanda Maggard.
Survivors: sons, Roger Lee White and wife, Patricia, of Jewell Ridge, Waldon White, Jr. and wife, Donna, of Anderson, SC; daughters, Mrs. Guy (Delores) Shuck of Talbott, TN, Lorene Roush of Richmond, Mrs. Curtis (Linda) White of Whitewood; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted March 21 at 11 a.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Joe Gross and Rev. John Kennedy officiating.
Burial followed in the White cemetery at White Mountain.
A song service was held March 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bascom S. Horn
Bascom Slimp Horn, 87, of the Compton Mountain section of Pilgrim Knob, VA, died March 5, 2004 at his home.
Born in McDowell County, WV, he was a son of the late Henry Wiley and Lilly Wimmer Horn.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan and McDowell Counties and was of the Protestant faith. He was a retired coal miner and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
He was preceded in death by one son, Curtis Horn, three sisters and three brothers.
Survivors: daughters, Jettie and husband, Oliver Addair, of Iaeger, WV, Lois and husband, Earl Cook, of Jewell Ridge; sons, Terry and wife, Carol Mullins Horn, of Thomasville, NC, Bascom Junior Horn of New Bern, NC; sisters, Amanda Payne of Bradshaw, WV, Melvina Dukes of Lincoln, DE, Ethel Fox of Bluefield, VA; brother, Jeff Horn of Apopka, FL; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted March 12 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Hobert Kennedy officiating.
Burial followed in the Horn Family cemetery on Compton Mountain near Pilgrim Knob.
