John F. Smith, 86, of Williamstown, died Saturday, Mar. 15, 1997, at Selby General Hospital, Marietta. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Noah and Margaret Boice Smith. Surviving are his wife, Mary Reed Smith; one daughter, Helen Poling of Williamstown; two sons, William Franklin Smith of Mesa, Ariz., and Phillip Eugene Smith of Kent, Ohio; one brother, Basil Smith of Frazesburg, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. Services were held at Lambert-Tatman Funeral Home, Vienna, with Rev. Gene Hutton officiating. Burial was in Rector cemetery, Burning Springs.

Kenneth Wayne Smith, 26, of Turkey Foot, Mineral Wells, died Friday, April 11, 1997, at Mineral Wells. He was born in Wood County, a son of Janie Small Starcher of Rockport and the late Neal Lewis Smith. He was a 1989 Parkersburg South High School graduate and was employed by Mike Miller Carpets. He was a member of Future Farmers of America and attended Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his mother are his stepfather, Leo R. Starcher of Rockport; one son, Derek Baites of Parkersburg; two brothers, Stacey Ray Smith of Snow Camp, N.C., and William Daniel Smith of Rockport; one half-brother, Timothy S. Starcher of Haw River, N.C.; three sisters, Kimberly Sue Forshey of Rockport, Sherry Lou Simmons of Boston, Ky., and Tracie Lyn Smith of Rockport; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Sams Smith of Mineral Wells; stepgrandmother, Mae Starcher of Grantsville; and nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Timmy Lewis Smith. Services were held at Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Chris Mullett officiating. Burial was in Wadesville cemetery.

Paul R. Smith, 31, of Arnoldsburg, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Parkersburg, a son of the late Albert B. and Ester Mae Burkhart Smith. Surviving are one brother, Jerry L. Smith of Arnoldsburg; one sister, Patty Burkhart of Canton; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Allen Smith officiating. Burial was in Elihu Stump cemetery, near Stumptown.

Willard F. Snider, 78, of Big Springs, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Rev. J.M. and Viola Shimer Snider. He was retired from Pennzoil Corp. and was a member of Hoy Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Hazel Veon Snider of Big Springs; four sons, James W. Snider, Lyle Wayne Snider, Timothy J. Snider, all of Big Springs, and Donald M. Snider of Harrisville; two daughters, Janice Blair of Big Bend and Jeanie Hickman of Big Springs; one brother, Martin J. Snider of Parkersburg; four sisters, Lottie Belt of Mineral Wells, Bernice Kral of Missouri, Lela Mathess of Columbus and Gladys Johnson of Williamstown; 13 grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, one brother and three sisters. Services were held at Hoy Chapel United Methodist Church, near Big Springs. Burial was in Saunders cemetery, Big Springs.
STALNAKER, GUY, JR.
Guy Stalnaker, Jr., 74, of North Citrus Circle, Zellwood, Fla., died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at Zellwood. He was born in Arnoldsburg, a son of the late Guy, Sr., and Emma Parks Stalnaker. He moved to central Florida in 1967 from Glenville. He was a World War II U.S. Naval Air Corps veteran where he was a naval aviator. He was a retired manager for Eckerd Drugs. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 118 AF&AM of Glenville, Scottish Rite of Orlando, Fla., a Shriner, and a member of First Baptist Church, Mount Dora, Fla. Surviving are his wife, Grace Howard Stalnaker of Zellwood; one daughter, Rebecca Archer of Marietta; one sister, Leah Martino of Clarksburg; and three grandchildren. Services were held at First Baptist Church, Mount Dora, with Rev. Richard Hamel officiating. Graveside services were held at Bridgeport cemetery, with Rev. Bob Walker officiating.
STAMP, THOMAS L.
Thomas Leroy Stamp, 85, of Bridgeport, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at United Hospital Center, Bridgeport, following a lengthly illness. He was born in Chicago, Ill., a son of the late John Goulding Stamp and Jessie May Cooper Stamp. He was a retired civil engineer and worked for Cabot Gas Co. and was district engineer for W.Va. Dept. of Highways from 1962-70, and worked for Fourco Glass Co. until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and a member of Order of Jerusalem. He served on the Bridgeport Planning Commission and was a member of city council from 1975-79. He was a former member of Bridgeport Lions Club and Bridgeport Country Club. He retired with 20 years of service from the Navy, serving from 1942-62 with rank of commander. Surviving are his second wife, Nona Maxine Baker Sturm; two sons, Lt. Col. John Morris Stamp, Ret., Niceville, Fla., and Thomas Lee Stamp of Bridgeport; one step-son, Jackson "Jack" Sturm of Bridgeport; three grandsons, William Thomas Stamp, Athens, Ohio, Capt. John Michael Stamp, Republic of Panama, and Jennings Thomas Stamp, Bridgeport; one step-grandson, Scott Sturm, Redlands, Calif.; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Morris, in 1986. Services were held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church with Rev. Fr. Leonard Gross officiating. Burial was in Bridgeport cemetery.

Bernard O. Starcher, 75, of Lick Fork Road, Roane County, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Richardson, a son of the late Sylvester "Ves" and Mae Langford Starcher. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and retired from Columbia Gas with several years of service. He was a member of Spencer Church of the Nazarene and was an avid supporter of West Virginia University athletics. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Roberts Starcher; one daughter, Tammy Starcher Bush of Spencer; two sisters, Joretta Foster of Vienna and Opal Stout of Cottageville; one brother, Rex Starcher of Spencer; one grandson, Joey Bush; and two step-granddaughters, Misty and Kayla Bush. He was preceded in death by one son, Joseph Ray Starcher; three sisters, Earliss Starcher, Goldie Young and Ruth Simmons; and three brothers, Willard Starcher, Alvin Starcher and O.L. "Bill" Starcher. Services were held at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Tim Bess officiating. Burial was in Starcher cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

Bethel B. Starcher, 72, of Cremo, died Monday, May 19, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born in Cabot, Boone County, a son of the late Albert and Della Gibson Starcher. He was a former oil and gas field worker. Surviving are four brothers, Bruce Starcher of Uneeda, Boyd Starcher of Seth, and Berthel Starcher and Bobby Starcher, both of Mt. Zion. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Harold Duskey officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olive United Methodist Church cemetery.

Charles Starcher, 63, of Parkersburg, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, at Estelle's Hospice House, Ocala, Fla. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Dennis and Golda Roberts Starcher. He retired from Midland Grocery Co. after 38 years of service, ending his career as manager. He was a member of Camden Avenue Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Wilma Waldron Starcher of Parkers-burg; one son, Charles Michael Starcher of Parkersburg; two daughters, Belinda Sue Lee of Parkersburg and Shelly Batten of Walker; two stepsons, Chris Waldron of Parkersburg and Cliff Waldron of Washington, Pa.; three stepdaughters, Camille Waldron, Celeste Ross, both of Parkersburg, and Candace Waldron of Columbus; one sister, Louise Davis of Slate; one aunt, Minnie Zinn of Parkersburg; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Starcher. Services were held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Evangelist Brian Jones officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Ruth S. Starcher, 83, of Parkersburg, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Arnoldsburg, a daughter of the late Allan and Margaret Whytsell Schoolcraft. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Willa Margaret Starcher of Parkersburg; and one sister, Vena Schreckengost of Parkersburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judson Clarence Starcher, four brothers; and three sisters. Services were held at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Gerald Morgan officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Willa Margaret "Maggie" Starcher, 64, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Altizer, a daughter of the late Judson Clarence and Ruth Schoolcraft Starcher. She was a graduate of Calhoun County High School. She was retired from Kaiser Aluminum, Ravenswood, and was a member of First Baptist Church. Candlelight services were held at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Mark Eaton officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens, Garden of the Christus.

Bernard D. Stout, 68, of Athens, Ohio, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at his residence. He was born in Hur, a son of the late John and Icie Starcher Stout. He was a 1945 graduate of Calhoun County High School and was formerly employed by B.F. Goodrich Tire, Parkersburg. He retired as manager of Appalachian Tire Products, Athens, in 1994. He was a member of First Church of God, Athens. Surviving are his wife, Viola G. "Peg" Stout of Athens; one son, Roger D. Stout of Parkersburg; one daughter, Pamela Gordon of Parkersburg; one stepdaughter, Tammy Camechis of Winter Haven, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one stepson, Billy Joe Schoonover. Services were scheduled Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with William Shepler officiating, and burial in Athens County Memory Gardens.

Ethel C. Stump, 94, of Dunbar, formerly of Grantsville, died Friday, Mar. 14, 1997, at Cedar Ridge Health Center, Sissonville. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Albert and Gertrude Francis Kight. She was a former Calhoun County 4-H leader. Surviving are five sons, Albert Stump and Robert Stump, both of Dunbar, Harold Stump and Sammy Stump, both of Charleston, and Donald Stump of Atwater, Ohio; four daughters, Ila Williams and Estrial Kennedy, both of Charleston, Kathryn Burrows of Grantsville and Barbara Kimble of Scott Depot; one sister, Olie Yoak of Grantsville; 25 grandchildren; 32 greatgrandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse T. Stump; one son, Carlos Stump; and one grandson. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
