Doris Stewart Earnest, 73, of Hickory, N.C., died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996, at Frye Regional Medical Center. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Scott Lawrence Stewart and Verle Johnson Stewart. She attended Salem College, Salem, Goucher College, Baltimore, Md., and received a scholarship to attend Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Baltimore. She graduated in 1946 and was a volunteer during World War II. She lived in Hickory from 1954- 75 and in Greenville, S.C., from 1975-1993 where she and her husband were owners of Southern States Fabrics. She moved back to Hickory in 1993. She was an avid supporter of the arts, including youth symphony and Hickory Civic Ballet Co. She was active in Hickory Junior Woman's Club and First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was in charge of education material for elementary grades. Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Thomas Robert Earnest; two daughters, Elizabeth Earnest Johnson Byrne of St. Louis, Mo., and Jane Scott Earnest Harwell of Hickory; one son, Thomas Robert Earnest, Jr., of Hickory; three grandsons; and one granddaughter. Services were held at First United Methodist Church, Hickory, with Dr. John Christy officiating. Burial was in Catawba Memorial Park cemetery.
EDWARDS, LELAH V.
Lelah V. Edwards, 97, of Rittman, Ohio, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 1996, at Rittman Nursing Home. She was born in Leatherbark, a daughter of the late K.L. and Dolly Whytsell. Surviving is one daughter, Ruth Miller of Barberton, Ohio. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Erma Miller; three sisters, Laura Price, Etta Offutt and Ethel Wilson; and one brother, Clyde Whytsell. Services were held at Hahn Funeral Home, Barberton. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Akron, Ohio.
ELLISON, JOHN C.
John C. Ellison, 77, of Leroy, died Monday, April 15, 1996, at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late William E. and Martha Hunt Ellison. He was a farmer and retired construction worker, having been a member of Operating Engineers Local 132 for more than 30 years. He attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Leroy. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Emilee E. Ellison; two daughters, Martha Stahlman of Ripley and Luana Williams of Spencer; one son, John W. Ellison of Leroy; four sisters, Ruby Greathouse of Hurricane, Geraldine Miller of Veto Lake, Nell Dalton of Parkersburg and Frankie Fulmer of Akron; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kermit Ellison and Harry Ellison and infant Everett Ellison. Services were held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Leroy, with Dick Elliott officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
EPLING, HOBERT W.
Hobert W. Epling, 77, of Spencer, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, at Roane General Hospital. He was born in Roane County, a son of the late Albert James and Emma Webb Epling. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Kellwood Corp., Spencer, with 21 years of service. He was a member of Spencer Baptist Temple. Surviving are his wife, Madeline Anderson Epling; three duahgters, Barbara Prine of Reedy, Beverly Greathouse and Jackie Milliken, both of Spencer; one son, William E. Epling of Warren, Pa.; two sisters, Ester Parsons of Grantsville and Elizabeth Keffer of Parkersburg; one brother, John E. Epling of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by five sisters, Flaye Stickle, Edith Careny, Muriel Anderson, Lorraine Reese and Jean Skulec; and two brothers, Frank Epling and Jack Epling. Services were held at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Richard W. Perrine officiating. Burial was in Eventide cemetery, Spencer.

Mark Allen Evans, 20, of Shock, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Grantsville, a son of Dennis B. Evans of Montgomery and Etta Ice Evans of Nobe. Laura J. Ferrell, 88, of Grantsville, died Thursday, June 27, 1996, at her sister's home in Grantsville. She was born in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Emery andSarah Elizabeth Smith Ferrell. Surviving are two sisters, Lilly Lanham of Grantsville and Mabel McIntyre of Big Bend; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Lora Hedge; and three brothers, Elbert Ferrell, Bruce Ferrell and Lester Ferrell. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Belt cemetery near Munday.

Velta D. Fiedler, 92, of Chadds Ford, Pa., died Monday, July15, 1996, at home. She was born in Mt. Zion, a daughter of the late George Gainer and Fay Fowler Gainer Riddle. Surviving are one daughter, Betty F. Bender of Chadds Ford; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold J. Fiedler, in February 1979, and two brothers, Gilbert and Darrell Riddle. Private services and burial were in Longwood cemetery.

Angel Flinn, infant daughter of Timothy and Amorette "Amy" Weekley Flinn of Parkersburg, died Tuesday, May 28, 1996, at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus. Surviving are paternal grandparents, Virgil and Mary Flinn of Lubeck; maternal grandparents, Carroll Dean and Carole Weekley of Parkersburg; paternal great-grandmother, Iva Flinn of Parkersburg; maternal great-grandparents, Hugh and Juanita Wilson of Grantsville; maternal great-grandmother, Lear Weekley of Akron; maternal step- great-grandmother, Opal Weekley of Vienna; six uncles; and four aunts. Services were at the convenience of the family. Burial was in Lubeck cemetery.

Alfred A. Ford, 86, of Grantsville, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1996, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. He was born in Doddridge County, a son of the late Terrance and Maggie Tate Ford. He was a retired truck driver and was a member of Hardman Chapel Church, Grantsville. Surviving are his wife, Ollie Shimer Ford; six sons, Anes Ford of East Lake, Ohio, Avery Ford of York, Pa., Ronald Ford of Barberton, Ohio, Billy Ford of Cleveland, Arlis Roger Ford and Randall Ford, both of Grantsville; five daughters, Josephine Church of Walton Hills, Ohio, Mable Sampson of Raleigh, N.C., Elmadean Bevins of Perry, Ohio, Nina Dawson of Millstone and Judith Gainer of Burnt House; three sisters, Nellie Bunnell of Parkersburg, Roanna Holbert of Cleveland and Arvilla Millican of Big Springs; 44 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Mazine Wilson and Dina Ford; one son, Terry Ford; three brothers, Audrey, Ransel and Brooks Ford; and one sister, Dorothy Haught. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial was in Gainer cemetery, Brohard.

Ila Belle Jarvis Fouse, 95, of Gainesville, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 7, 1996, at Collins Court, Gainesville. She was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and Marietta College. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, William F. Fouse of San Raphael, Calif., and Claude A. Fouse of Gainesville; four sisters, Ola Stalfort of Grantsville, Myrtle Haught and Una Jarvis, both of Clarksburg, and Lois Davis of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Fouse; two brothers; and one sister. Graveside services were held at Mount Olivet cemetery, Parkersburg, with Rev. Eugene Adkins officiating.

Albert O. Fowler, 83, of Windham, Ohio, died Sunday, April 14, 1996, at his home. He was born in Arnoldsburg, the son of the late Albert G. and Virginia Palmer Fowler. He was employed by Peerless Electric Co. until he retired in 1975. He was a member of Windham Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing. Surviving, are his wife, Una Wilson, whom he married

Laymon of Tallmadge, Ohio, Renda Pettit of Garrettsville, Ohio, and Renee Seljan of Windham; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; two brothers-, five sisters; and two grandchildren. Services were held at Windham Baptist Church, with Rev. Joe Board officiating. Burial was in Windham Township cemetery.

Elva G. Fowler, 89, of Mt. Zion, died Monday, May 20, 1996, at her residence. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Lee and Laura Elliott Gainer. She was a member of Mt. Zion Homemaker's Club. She attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Geneva) Knotts of Charleston; one sister, Glena Marshall of New Martinsville; one brother, Burl Gainer of Clendenin; one grandson, Charles E. Knotts of Ripley; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deward Royce Fowler; and two brothers, Otho Gainer and Denzil Gainer. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Glendon McKee and Rev. Lee Swor officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery, near Grantsville.
