T. Russell Burrows, 71, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 1996, at Roane General Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late French and Diane Boggs Burrows. He was a Temple University graduate, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and retired from the Heinz Division of Kelsey-Hayes Corp., Philadelphia. He was a scout-master for Boy Scouts of America in Philadelphia for several years and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are one daughter, Dorothea Fogel of Lansdale, Pa.; one son, Allan Burrows of Baysville, N.J.; and four grandchildren. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
BUSCH, R. M. "MAX"
R.M. 'Max' Busch, 80, of Parkersburg, died July 12, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Emory Ray and Blanche Ferrell Busch. He was a 1935 graduate of Calhoun County High School. He and his wife owned and operated Busch Grocery and Service Station at Big Bend for several years. In 1945, he purchased a bulldozer and began a career in the excavation and construction business, which became known as Max Busch, Inc., of Parkersburg. He built farm ponds and worked on construction of dams throughout West Virginia. In 1968 he expanded his operations to include the first 24-hour crane rental with the only Grove hydraulic cranes in the area. Upon his retirement in 1978, the business was sold to his sons. He was a member of Mount Olivet Lodge NO. 3, AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies of the Valley of Parkersburg, Jerusalem Chapter No. 3, Royal Arch Masons, Calvary Commandery No. 3, Knights Templar. He was a former director, of Mid Atlantic Shrine Association and a Member of Nemesis Temple of the Shrine where he served on the directors staff for years. He was a longtime member of Operations Engineers Union Local 132 and a 50-year member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2308. He was a life member of W.Va. Soil Conservation Service and American Association of Retired Persons. He was a member of Wild and Wonderful West Virginia Good Sams Travel Club, Land-o-Lake of Ohio Airstream Club, and W.Va. Unit of Airstream Club. In 1988, he was recognized for his philanthropic work as a member of Grand Masters Club of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation and was also honored as a member of One hundred Million Dollar Club of the Shrine for philanthropic work. He attended Fairlawn Baptist Church, Parkersburg, where he served as a deacon, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Okeechobee, Fla., and a former member of Seventh Street United Methodist Church, Parkersburg. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Theresa Lynch Busch; two sons, Glenn K. Busch of Lubeck and Donald M. Busch of Parkersburg; one daughter, Katie Slider of Parkersburg; three grandsons; one granddaughter; one step-grandson; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, William 'Bill' Busch; and one sister, Maxine Stoneking. Services were held at Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Pastor Donald R. Yeager officiating. Entombment was in Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Sunset Gardens, Parkersburg. Masonic rites were by Mount Olivet Lodge No. 3, AF&AM.
BUSH, ARLEY
Arley Bush, 95, of Tanner, Revers Community, died Saturday, July 6, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Gilmer County, a son of the late Floyd and Margaret Gainer Bush. He worked for Morgantown Mill from 1919-1933, Roy B. McGee Funeral Home from 1933-39, Wade Goff from 1939-62, and retired from Viscose, Parkersburg. He was a Baptist. Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Iva Gay Boyce Bush; six daughters, Margaret Dunbar of Vienna, Lois Carpenter of Parkersburg, Ruby Weaver and Christine Miner, both of Boaz, and Roberta West and Donna Grogg, both of Nobe; three sons, Richard Bush of Tanner, Donald Bush of Nobe and Cletus Bush of Franklinville, .N.J.; 45 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great- grandchildmn. He was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Bush and James Bush; one daughter, Mildred Yoak; two brothers; one sister, and six grandchildren. Services were held at Ellyson Mortuary, Inc., Glenville, with Rev. Robert Nicholas officiating. Burial was in Nobe cemetery.
BYRD, JAMES W.
James W. Byrd, 67, of Smithville, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 1996, at his residence. He was born in Burnt House, a son of the late Jesse and Thessa Gragg Byrd. He was a 1951 graduate of Harrisville High School, a graduate of Salem College and did one year of graduate studies at West Virginia University. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1951-1955 and again from 1959-1963. He served in U.S. Air National Guard from 1972-1988. He later taught school in Ritchie County, and eventually retired as a social worker for the Dept. of Human Services. He was a member of Harmony Lodge 118, AF&AM, of Burnt House. Surviving are three brothers, Glenmer Byrd and Jesse Byrd, both of Smithville, and Willard Byrd of Big Springs; two sisters, Shirley Byrd of Elizabeth and Otha Frederick of Smithville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Burlen Byrd and Franklin Byrd; and two sisters, Mary Chambers and Dollie Byrd. Services were held at New Mount Olive Church, Burnt House. Burial was in New Mount Olive cemetery.

Bessie R. Cain, 84, of Sarahsville, Ohio, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1996, at Summit Acres Health Care Center, Caldwell, Ohio. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late J.W. and Lona Parsons. She was a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, Denver Cain of Sarahsville and Jasper Cain of Cleveland, Ohio; one daughter, Lea Daniels of Homersville, Ohio; two sisters, Mandy Sims of Parkersburg and Dola Nichols of Orma; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held Sunday at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Rev. Carl Marks officiating. Burial was in White cemetery, Little White Oak, Chloe.

Hartzel B. Cain, 89, of Tanner, died Thursday, May 23, 1996, at The Willows, Parkersburg. He was born in Stringtown, Tyler County, a son of the late Chris and Mary Elizabeth Davis Cain. He retired from McCalls Drilling Co. after 26 years of service. He was a Bible School teacher for 12 years. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Geneva Ferguson Cain; two sons, Robert Cain and Buddie Cain, both of Tanner; one daughter, Marie Smith of Parkersburg; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Deloris Amos. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville, with Rev. Ronzel Roberts and Rev. Alfred Hickman officiating. Burial was in Tanner Baptist Church cemetery.

Mary Madge Cain, 87, of Big Bend, died Saturday, April 6, 1996, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born in Doddridge County, a daughter of the late Ulysses Grant and Lena Leota White. She was a homemaker and a member of Hardman Chapel United Methodist Church, Grantsville. Surviving are her husband, Milton Cain; three daughters, Leota Wease of Elkview, Violet Williams and Nancy Craddock, both of Big Bend; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Milton Cain, Jr.; four brothers; two sisters; one half-brother; and one half-sister. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Guy Carpenter, 100, of Arnoldsburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1996, at Roane General Hospital. He was born in Calhoun County, a son of the late Joshua and Samantha Life Carpenter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I, a retired farmer, photographer, and avid outdoorsman. He was a life member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are six daughters, Ada Flo Starr of Wooster, Ellen Flo Starcher of Spencer, Mary Jane Rose Bee of Ashland, Ohio, Karen Sue Roberts of Barstowe, Calif., Delma Ruth Endicott and Sharon Lou Stump, both of Parkersburg; four sons, Owen Page Carpenter of Perrysville, Ohio, Guy Vane Carpenter of Richwood, Watson Pool Carpenter of Mineral Wells and Boyd Blaine Carpen-ter of Ashland; three stepdaughters, Ellen Jackson and Carol Ann Falls, both of Arnoldsburg, and Daisy Boyce of Newport News, Va.; 35 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dora Ellen Price Carpenter; his second wife, Radie Bragg Starcher Carpenter; three daughters, Thelma Blanche Bowers, Jennie Fern Eagle and Emogene Atkinson; two sisters, Marcelia Carpenter and Nancy Carpenter; four brothers, Marcellus Carpenter, Alpha Benjamin Carpenter, Mallie C. Carpenter and Ralph Greely Carpenter; one granddaughter, Michelle Roberts; and one grandson, Amos Glenn Starcher. Services were held at Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, with Evangelist Corley Miller officiating. Burial was in Carpenter-Adkins cemetery, Arnoldsburg.

Ralph E. Carpenter, Jr., 50, died Monday, July 15, 1996, At Children's Medical Center, Akron, Ohio, following a long illness. He was born in Washington, Pa., son of Ralph E. and Laverne Carpenter, Sr. He had been a Mantua area resident for 21 years. He was employed for 13 years at Newbury Industries as an electrician and check-out man. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was an avid fisherman. Surviving are his wife, Delores Wilson Carpenter; one son, Scott E. Carpenter; one daughter, Melissa A. Carpenter; mother, Laverne Kropp of Wintham; two brothers, Donald of Pennsylvania and Brian of Ravenna, Ohio; and four sisters, Alona Forkas of Twinsburg, Bonnie Hatfield of Freedom, Sherri Carpenter of Ohio and Pam Puleo of Akron, Ohio. He was the son-in-law of Rev. James E. and Odell Wilson, formerly of Big Springs. Services were held at Greens Funeral Home, Mantua. Burial, was in West Lawn cemetery, Mantua.

Ernestine "Teeny" Carson, 62, of Rockport, died Friday, Feb. 23, 1996, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg. She was born in Grantsville, a daughter of the late Charles Owen and Catherine Ruth Westfall Malona. She was a former employee of Ripley Sportswear. She was a member of Pond Creek Baptist Church, where she was a choir director. Surviving are her husband, William Charles Carson; two brothers, Charles O. Malona, Jr., and Jerry Nolan Malona, both of Grantsville; two sisters, Doris Roberts of Glenville and Joy Bush of Kanawha; four nephews; four nieces; five great-nephews; and three great-nieces. Services were held at Kime Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Rev. Paul Morrison and Rev. Jack Flanery officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Eula M. Carter, 78, of Birch River, died Monday, Jan. 22, 1996, at home after a short illness. She was a homemaker and a farmer. Surviving are five sons, Roscoe, Jr., of Windham, Ohio, Eddie, Roger, Jerry and Joey, all of Birch River; three daughters, Dorothy Daugherty of Clinton, Tenn., Patricia Hanel of Tanner and Linda Londrigan of Balitmore, Ohio; two sisters, Pearl Waychoff and Peggy Jozwiak, both of Arizona; 27 grandchildren; and 16 great- grandchildren. Services were held at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, with Rev. Eddie Bender officiating. Burial was in King cemetery, Walnut.
