Joe Burgess
Joe Burgess, 43, of Gilbert, W. Va., died Friday, February 11, 2005 at Logan Regional Medical Center.

Born March 23, 1961 in Cabell County, W. Va., he was a son of Janice Rasnick of Coal Mountain, W. Va. and the late Joseph Cecil Burgess Sr.

Mr. Burgess was a truck driver and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, David Bryant (Ida Mae) Burgess of Pigeon Creek, W. Va.; two sisters, Rhonda Marie (Rev. Eddie Maynard) of Clarksville, Tenn. and Lisa Kate Burgess of Nashville, Tenn.; two nephews, Eddie Maynard Jr. of Nashville, Tenn. and David "D.J." Burgess Jr. of Sun Hill, W. Va.; two nieces, Jenny Landen of Clarksville, Tenn. and Lisa Marie Canter of Nashville, Tenn.; three great-nephews and one great-niece.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2005, at the Mounts Funeral Home chapel, Gilbert, W. Va., with Rev. Larry Morgan, Rev. Patty Morgan and Rev. David Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Blair Family cemetery at Prichard, W. Va.

Friends and family members will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at the funeral home chapel Sunday, February 13, 2005 from 6 p.m. ­ 9 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert, W. Va.

Dorothy Katalinas

Dorothy Mae Hunt Katalinas, 61, of Williamson, W. Va., died Tuesday morning, February 22, 2005.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Ky.

Ida Jo Spradlin

Ida Jo Spradlin, 74, Dan's Branch, Borderland, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

Born March 16, 1930, in Varney, Ky., to the late Ezra Clark and Dixie Runyon Clark, she was a retired social worker from the West Virginia Department of Welfare. She was a member of the Philadelphia United Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos Spradlin and sister, Gracie Boyce.

Surviving are son, Darrell G. Spradlin of Borderland, W. Va.; daughters, Charlotte Hopson of Borderland, W. Va. and Leann Stanley of Hardy, Ky.; brother, Johnny Clark of Borderland, W. Va.; sister, Linda Mealer of Walhalla, S.C.; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 25, 2005, 12 noon, at Hatfield Funeral Chapel will Harrison Baisden and Steve Ramey officiating. Interment will follow at Spradlin cemetery, Dan's Branch, Borderland, W. Va.

Serving as pallbearers are Darryl James, Jimmy Darryl Spradlin, Ira Etters, Randy Clark, Bob Mealer and Ray Clark.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home with services at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky.

Kenneth Surber

Kenneth Larry Surber, of Matewan, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Chambers Funeral Services.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc., of Matewan, W. Va.

Hubert Trent

Hubert Trent, 77, of Greenville, W. Va., passed away Monday, February 21, 2005, at his residence.

He was born March 16, 1927 in Greenville, W. Va., to the late Dewey and Stella Grimmett Trent.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 24, 2005, 1 p.m., at Hunt Freewill Baptist Tabernacle, Greenville, W. Va. with Rev. Cecil Bartram and Rev. Mike Pollard officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Memory Gardens, Godby Heights, Pecks Mill, W. Va.

Friends may call the Hunt Freewill Baptist Tabernacle Wednesday evening, February 23, 2005, after 6 p.m.

Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va. is in charge of arrangements.

Louise Browning
Louise "Booge" Browning, 80, of Elk Creek, W. Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born May 3, 1924 at Elk Creek, W. Va., the daughter of the late Mont and Tennessee Parsley Farley.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack) Browning who passed away February 2, 1988, sharing the homegoing celebration date with her; three brothers, Ray, Arvil and Lloyd Farley; and three sisters, Dana Tickle, Gladys Justice and Trulie Brewster.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Full Gospel Lighthouse Church of Elk Creek, W. Va.

She is survived by her five daughters, Tenna Wyant of Pickerington, Ohio, Jackie Grimm of Chillicothe, Ohio, Teresa Curry, Dianna Wellman and Ina Rae Mahon, all of Delbarton, W. Va.; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a brother, Charles Wayburn Farley of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister, Dot Workman of Delbarton, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held at the Chafin Funeral Home Saturday, February 5, 2005, at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Mitchell Bias and Tommy Powers officiating. Burial will follow in the Curry-Farley cemetery at Elk Creek, W. Va.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday evening from 6 - 9 p.m. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Chafin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arnold Fitch
Arnold Ray Fitch, 60, of Matewan, W. Va., died Saturday, February 12, 2005 at Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Born December 19, 1944 in Spring, W. Va., he was a son of the late Cecil J. and Fonnie McCoy Fitch.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fitch was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil J. Fitch Jr. and two sisters, Rosetta Varney and Hazel Marie Harvill.

He was a former carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include: his former wife, Rena Jude of Puritan Mines, W. Va.; a daughter, Angie Ray Fitch of Newtown, W. Va.; four brothers, Raymond Fitch of Rawl, W. Va.; Donald Fitch and John L. Fitch, both of Lexington, Ky. and Jessie Fitch of Sprigg, W. Va.; three sisters, Dorothy Sheffield of Spring Hill, Fla.; Mary Sands of Lakeland, Fla. and Phyllis Ball of Brandon, Fla.; two grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Tuesday, February 15, 2005 graveside at the Fitch cemetery, Merrimac, W. Va. with Virgil Hamilton officiating.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. ­ 8 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2005 at Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, Ky.

Tara Justus
Tara Nicole Justus, 7 months and 8 days old, of Panther, W. Va., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005 at Women's and Children's Hospital, Charleston, W. Va.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005 at Little Zion Church located on Greenbrier Mountain in Panther, W. Va. with Rev. John Justus and Rev. Zeb Justus officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hillard Justus cemetery, Guesses Fork, Va.

Friends may call at the Little Zion Church from 6 p.m. ­ 9 p.m. on Monday, February 14, 2005.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Gilbert, W. Va.

Randy Hatfield
Randy Paul Hatfield, 52, of Johnstown Road, Beckley, W. Va., formerly of the Coal Mountain area, passed away Monday, February 21, 2005, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

He was born November 30, 1952 to Drewey Hatfield of Coal Mountain, W. Va. and the late Almeda Hoosier Hatfield.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 25, 2005, 1 p.m., at Big Cub Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at the Hatfield cemetery, Coal Mountain, W. Va.

Friends may call the Big Cub missionary Baptist Church at Coal Mountain, W. Va., Thursday evening from 6 - 10 p.m.

Dorothy Mae Katalinas
Dorothy Mae Hunt Katalinas, 61, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Ky.

Born August 11, 1943, in Hardy, Ky., to the late Dennis Hunt and Nellie Mae Gillman Hunt, she was a factory worker and homemaker. She was a member of Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Deanna Lee Hunt.

Surviving are her sons, Richard Lee Chapman of Matewan, W. Va. and Delmar Ray Chapman of Chicago, Ill.; brothers, Woody (Cathy) Hunt of Chicago, Ill and Douglas Ray (Paulette) Hunt of Chicago, Ill.; sisters, Delcie Marie (John) Norris of Florida, Janet Kay (Rodney) Chafins of Louisa, Ky., Geraldine (Timmy) Bowens of Toler, Ky., Brenda Lou (Kenny) Bailey of Fort Gay, W. Va., JoAnn (Don) Bevins of Hatfield, Ky., Delores Jean Hunt of Los Angeles, Cal. and Bernice Sue (Ervin) Smith of Sidney, Ky.; and one grandchild, Cheyana Chapman.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 25, 2005, 2 p.m., at Rogers Funeral Home with Lonnie Francis officiating. Burial will follow at Hunt cemetery, Hardy, Ky.

Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Funeral Home.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.E. Rogers Funeral Home, Belfry, Ky.

Robert May
Robert Lee May, 50, of Anawalt, W. Va., passed away Sunday, February 20, 2005, in Pike County, Ky.

He was born on April 28, 1954, in McCarr, Ky. to the late Ulysses G. May and Lucille Dalton May.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 25, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell, with burial following in Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6 - 9 p.m.

Kenneth Surber
Kenneth Larry Surber, 67, of Matewan, W. Va., passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Williamson Memorial Hospital.

Born September 22, 1937, in Williamson, W. Va. to the late Kenneth Andrew Surber and Dorothy M. Calfee, He was a member of the Delbarton Regional Church of God.

Mr. Surber was a graduate of Williamson High School and Marshall University. He worked for the Becker Music Company as an instrument repairman while attending college at Marshall. Mr. Surber's teaching career consisted of positions in Florida, Ohio and West Virginia. His success as a band director at Williamson High School in the 1980s was evident by the over 150-member band and the many awards and trophies the band received.

During his career at Matewan Middle School he formed a jazz band which performed for various community events. Mr. Surber's love for music was manifested throughout the region with performances with the Mel Gillespie band, Barnum & Bailey Circus; Holiday on Ice; The Greenbrier; and at the Logan State Park for the Aracoma Stage Company. Aside from his music abilities Mr. Surber enjoyed working with wood, such as making furniture, violins, guitars and various other pieces.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Moore Surber of Matewan, W. Va.; sons, Christopher Surber of South Point, Ohio and Kenneth (Angela) Surber of Guyton, Ga.; daughter, Brigit (Jason) Logan of Hillsboro, Ohio; brother, Robert (Cindy) Calfee of Williamson, W. Va.; sister, Phyllis Lusk of Pauleys Island, S.C.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Mary, Mark and Mackenzie; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 23, 2005, 11 a.m., at Chambers Funeral Services' Chapel with Rev. Mitchell Bias officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The Brothers of the Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will begin Thursday, February 24, 2005, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services, Inc. of Matewan, W. Va.

James Copley
James Edward Copley, 80, of Chattaroy, W. Va., died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at the Mingo Health Care Center in Williamson, W. Va.

Born May 29, 1924 in Webb, W. Va., he was a son of the late Denny and Luda Jane Chafin Copley.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Copley was preceded in death by a son, Gary Copley and several brothers and sisters.

He was a retired coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company, a member of the Community Philadelphia United Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II.

Survivors include: Dollie M. Copley of Chattaroy, W. Va.; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Copley of Pikeville, Ky.; a grandson, David (Rene) Copley of Pikeville, Ky.; a brother, Clyde Copley of Fort Gay, W. Va. and a sister, Irene "Tootsie" Marcum of Fort Gay, W. Va.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005 at Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, Ky. with Gary Runyon and Stirl Marcum officiating.

Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, W. Va.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2005 with special services at 7 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, Ky.
