Virginia Stanley
Virginia Hope Stanley, 77, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at her residence.
Born October 15, 1926 in Pikeville, Ky., to the late Delmon Francis and Lizzie Coffee Francis, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Stanley was a member of McVeigh United Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervil Stanley.
Surviving are her sons, Jeffrey (Brenda) Perkins of Williamson, W. Va. and June Bug Lydel; daughters, Linda Lou Miller of Williamson, W. Va., Mary Elizabeth (Roger) Thacker of Williamson, W. Va., Glema Sue (Wallace) Farley of Williamson, W. Va., Judy Gail Lydel, Cora (John) Ratcliff of Williamson, W. Va.; brother, R.B. Francis of Williamson, W. Va.; sisters, Dorothy May Smith of Williamson, W. Va. and Bonnie Ward of Williamson, W. Va.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 15, 2004, 2 p.m., at Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Brian Hager and others officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Linzie Lester
Linzie Glen Lester, 90, of Hanover, W. Va., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at his residence in Hanover.
Born April 11, 1914, in Hanover, W. Va., to the late Amos and Thursa Cline Lester, he was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Cline Lester; one sister, Octavia Wilson; five brothers, Bertie, Lity, Morris, Bryan and Remely Lester.
Surviving are his children, three daughters, Myrtle (Gerald) Lester of Baisden, W. Va., Laura (Arnold) Davis of Strongville, Ohio and Allie (Peter J.) Mahovlich of Strongville, Ohio; four sons, Benny Ray (Gabby) Lester of Baisden, W. Va., Arnold Howard (Chond) Lester of Augusta, Ga., Rev. Roy Lee (Romaine) Lester of Justice, W. Va. and Billie Charles (Cindy) Lester of Sudlersville, Md.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
The family extends special thanks to Dignity Hospice of Chapmanville, W. Va. for their love and kindness.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 16, 2004, 1 p.m., at Mounts Funeral Home with Rev. Denny May officiating. Burial will follow at the Lester Family cemetery at Joe Point, Hanover, W. Va. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Michael Childers
Michael Roy Childers, 46, of Newtown died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 31, 1958, in Williamson, to the late Vernon and Gertrude Chambers Childers. He was a graduate of Matewan High School, a graduate of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College with a degree in mine engineering and worked as a coal miner.
He is survived by his wife Tammy Hall Childers; one daughter, Micah Michelle Childers of Newtown; one brother, Vernon (Sandy) Childers II of Syracuse, N.Y.; one sister, Tonyie (Roy) Rolen of Pigeon Creek; one nephew, Chad Chafin of Newtown; two nieces, Stacy Fields of Pigeon Creek and Kelly Preece of Slaters Branch, Ky.; four great-nephews, Austin "Poss" Chafin, Lil' Joey, Dalton and Lil' Brian; and two great-nieces, Morgan and Alexa.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon, Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the Pentecostal Tabernacle in Newtown with the Rev. Randy Casey officiating. Burial will follow in the Ellison Hatfield cemetery in Newtown.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Monday, May 24, at the church with special services beginning at 7 p.m.

Lois Evans
Lois L. Evans, 58, of Chattaroy, W. Va., passed away Thursday, May 13, 2004, at her residence.
Born April 28, 1946, in Williamson, W. Va., to the late Hi Dillon and Ruth Brasiel Dillon Browning, she was a homemaker. Lois attended the Fellowship Baptist Church, Lenore, W. Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, David Dillon; and sisters, Brenda Lenard and Jerri Evans.
Surviving are her sons, Bryan (Minnie) Kulik of Canada, Ky. and Shane (Hope) Kulik of Lenore, W. Va.; brothers, Rick, Donnie, Timmy and Terri Dillon; sister, Cindy Dillon; five grandchildren, Shayla, Dylan, Blake, Chaz and Tiffany Kulik; and her step-mother, Bessie Dillon of Chattaroy, W. Va.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 17, 2004, 2 p.m., at Fellowship Baptist Church, Lenore, W. Va. with Rev. Don Stroud officiating. Burial will follow at the Dillon cemetery, Delbarton, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 15, 2004, 6 - 9 p.m. and anytime Sunday, May 16, at the mortuary.

Glenita Vance
Glenita J. (Stepp) Vance, age 72, of Marengo, Ohio, died Sunday, May 23, 2004 in, Marion, Ohio
She was born in Delbarton, W. Va. on March 24, 1932 to the late Rev. Clarence C. and Etta (Canterbury) Stepp. The homemaker was an active member of Edison Enterprise Baptist Church, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, canning, and gardening.
She was very proud of her family, survived by her husband of almost 50 years Alex; children: Patricia (Tom) Moorhead of Columbus, Ohio, Terry Vance of Marengo, Ohio, Clarence (Debbie) Vance of Livonia, Mi., Alexis (Dave) Waterhouse of Cardington, Ohio; seven grandchildren: Glenetta Blair of Cincinnati, Ohio, Don (Kim) Blair of Marengo, Ohio, Teresa (Keith) Reida of Marysville, Audrey (Craig) VanHouten of Mt. Vernon, Dana (Chad) Howell of Gahanna, Ohio, Brian Vance of Livonia, Mi., Shannon Waterhouse of Marengo, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren; Haden & Brady; brothers Ezra R. "Bud" (Hannah) Stepp of Columbus, Ohio, Jerry H. Stepp of Columbus, Ohio; and sisters: Gertrude (James) Thompson of Marengo, Ohio, Edna (Felix) Miller of Cardington, Ohio Brenda (Amos) Muncy of Colorado Springs, Col.
She was preceded in death by sisters; Sabra Maddock and Juanita Stepp.

Danny (Hook) Lee Ratliff, 58, of Harless Creek of Regina, passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Pikeville Medical Center.

Dewey "JR" Varney
1938-2004
Dewey Varney, Jr., 66, of Zebulon Highway, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at his residence.
Born January 17, 1938 in Pike County, the son of the late Dewey and Celia Honaker Varney, in this life he was a coal miner.
He is preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
Jr. is survived by his wife Phyllis Varney of Zebulon; one son, David Varney of Kimper; three daughters, Diana Cains, Norma Jean May, both of Kimper and Tammy Lynn Moore of Martin, Ky.; three brothers, Blige Varney of Kimper, Grant Varney of Brush, and Teddy Varney of Kimper; two sisters, Arzonia Varney of Kimper, and Bertie Chapman of Prestonsburg; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Jr. will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, 2004, 1 p.m., at the Community Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at the Varney Branch cemetery, Kimper.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Tuesday at Community Funeral Home.

Gary L. Hayes
Gary L. Hayes passed away at his home on Marrowbone, Rt. 1, Kermit, W. Va. He was born on January 16, 1950, at Salyersville, Ky., the son of Bonita B. Hayes of Louisville, Ky. and the late Clayborn Hayes.
Gary was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his mother, Gary is survived by one son, Gary L. (Tammy) Hayes II of Marrowbone, Rt. 1 Kermit; and one grandson, Derek Cole Hayes of Kermit. Also surviving are one sister, Pamela Hayes of Louisville; and five brothers, Clayborn "Tom" (Janice) Hayes of Warfield, Ky., Steven Hayes, David Hayes, Larry J. Hayes and C.A. Hayes, all of Louisville.
Visitation will start at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, at the Gospel Church of God in Jesus Christ on the Left Fork of Marrowbone, Rt. 1 Kermit.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, with Rev. Paul Messer officiating.
Burial will follow in Hayes cemetery at Yatesville Lake, Ky., with U.S. Military graveside rites.

Henry Gillman
Henry Gillman, 80, of Trace Creek, a member of the Duncan Fork House of Prayer, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004. He was born December 23, 1923, in Mingo County. He was one of 12 children born to the late Ples and Lucinda (Ooten) Gillman.
Henry was an avid hunter who loved his well-trained hunting dogs. He was most happy when he was working outdoors. Henry, a 38-year veteran of the mining industry and a UMWA member, was retired from Youngstown Mines of Dehue, W. Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 49 years, Jewell (Mullins) Gillman; one brother, Buford Gillman; and five sisters, Hannah Boggs, Hazel Justice Perry, Gracie Gillman, Frances Pauley and Myrtle Widner.
He is survived by one son, Darrel Gillman currently serving at the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Greensboro, N.C.; four daughters, Drema Dempsey, Rita Dempsey, Michele Vance of Delbarton, W. Va. and Doil Miller of Colliers, W. Va.; 12 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother, Cap Gillman of Chapmanville, W. Va.; and three sisters, Alice Starr of Flatwoods, Ky., Mary Blair of Delbarton, W. Va. and Sophia Workman of Yuma, W. Va.
Visitation is scheduled from 6 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at James Funeral Home, Aracoma. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 19, 2004, with burial following at Lenore Memorial Gardens.
Roy Ailiff Sr.
Roy L. Ailiff, Sr., 68, of Williamson, W. Va., passed away Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky.

Joseph Harris, Sr.
Joseph Dale Harris, Sr., 57, of Red Jacket, W. Va., passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born January 23, 1947, in Norfolk, Va., to the late Henry Harris and Catherine Lawson Harris, he was a coal miner. Mr. Harris was a member of UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Harris; and sisters, Edna DeGuzman and Alberta Smith.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Hatcher Harris; sons, Joseph Dale Harris, Jr., (Paula) of Radcliff, Ky. and Michael Lee Harris (Felicia) of Mainheim, Germany; sisters, Bonnie Dean, Carolyn Dotson and Gay McCoy; and three grandchildren, Katelyn and Kristyn Harris and Michael Lee Harris, Jr.
The body has been cremated and private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Roy Ailiff Sr.
Roy L. Ailiff Sr., 68, of Williamson, died on Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, Ky.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1935, in Mingo County, a son of the late James and Melda Layne Ailiff. He retired from the N&W and N&S Railroad after 48 years as a crane operator.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Wanda Lou Looney and Emma Joyce Kelly.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara S. Browning Ailiff; two sons, Roy Lee Ailiff Jr. and James Morris Ailiff, both of Belfry, Ky.; two brothers, Richard (Claudine Ailiff and Frank (Lilly) Ailiff, both of Williamson; five grandchildren, Moses (Brandy) Ailiff, Shawn Eric Ailiff, Roy L. Ailiff III, Austin Ailiff and Sarah Ailiff; and four great-grandchildren, Aurora Ailiff, Owen Ailiff, Alex Ailiff and Peyton Roberts.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Monday, May 10, 2004, at the Rogers Funeral Home in Belfry with Brother Allen Shouse officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens at Huddy, Ky.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
