Alada Totten Fraley
Alada Totten Fraley, 88, of Delbarton went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 17, 2004.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1916, a daughter of the late Bailey and Betty Marcum Chaffin of Wayne County, W. Va. She was a life-long member the America United Baptist Church of Delbarton, W. Va.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Warren Glen Chaffin, Bailey Carter Chaffin, Ulysses Grant Chaffin, Gilbert Chaffin and Carlos Chaffin; two sisters, Clara Chaffin and Grethel Salmons; her first husband Frank William Totten; her second husband, Shelby Fraley; twin sons, Elijah Totten and Ezekiel Totten; and three step-children, Frank W. Totten Jr., James Pat Totten and Lahoma Curry.
Mrs. Fraley is survived by one sister, Betty Marie Tuggle of Grove City, Ohio, four sons, William C. (Janet) Totten and Albert Calvin (Betty) Totten, both of Delbarton, Charles David Glen (Karen) Totten of Smithfield, Va., and Brady Clinton (Betty) Totten of Crum, W. Va.; one daughter, Tammy Renae (Rusty) Chambers of Varney; three step-children, Rosalee Simpkins of Elyria, Ohio, Shelia (Everett) Slone of Delbarton, and Betty Murphy of Burns, Ind.; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of Christian brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Chafin Funeral Home in Delbarton with the Revs. Dale Carey, Bobby Perry, Mitchell Bias and Ron Page officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Memory Gardens in Maher.
Viewing was Thursday, March 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the funeral home. A special service were at 7 p.m. with the Revs. Lewis Hall and Leo Walker officiating.
Margaret Rose
Margaret L. Rose, 87, of Roderfield, W. Va., near Welch, W. VA., passed away Saturday, February 28, 2004, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
She was born March 29, 1916, in Marion, Va., to the late Jesse and Lillian Kegley York. Locally, her daughter Hope Gilliland survives.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 3, 2004, 1 p.m., at Fanning Funeral Home Chapel, Welch, W. Va. with Woody Wyhte and grandson Kenneth Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, W. Va.

Audrey Key
Audrey Madge Francis Key, 64, of Amarillo, Texas, died Sunday, February 29, 2004.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.
George W. Tanner
George W. Tanner, 77, of Chillicothe, Ohio, passed from this life early Monday morning, Mar. 1, 2004 in Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 28, 1927 in Big Sandy, W. Va., the son of Edward S. and Carrie Smith Tanner. On Sept. 11, 1948, he married Geraldine Mitchell, who survives.
Also surviving are daughters, Barbara Nowlin, Chillicothe and Deborah Bradley, Huntington, W. Va.; sons, George W. Tanner, Jr., Chillicothe and John Tanner, Proctorville, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sisters, Bobbie Biliter, Majestic, W. Va. and Carlene Thune, Torrance, Cal. His parents, two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Mr. Tanner was an employee of Metropolitan Life, both in West Virginia and Chillicothe, retiring as District Manager in 1990. A veteran of WWII, he served in Germany as a member of the security force during the Nuremberg War Trials and at Spandau Prison. He was a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church, Scioto Lodge No. 6, F&AM, Chillicothe York Rite Bodies, Aladdin Shrine Temple, Columbus and the Ross County Shrine Club.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004 in the Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home, Chillicothe with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Charles Messer
Charles Christopher "Chris" Messer, 23, of Holden, W. Va., formerly of Breeden, W. Va., passed away Sunday, February 29, 2004, at Beckley, W. Va.
He was born April 10, 1980 in Williamson, W. Va., the son of Magaline Maynard of Dunlow, W. Va., Eva Gail Adkins, Breeden, W. Va., Jennings (Doc) Maynard and the late Arville Messer Sr. Mr. Messer was a machine shop laborer at Mayo Machinery.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Fannie Kirk.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his close companion, Zelma Duncan; special grandfather, Jesse "Poppy" Messer of Breeden, W. Va.; brothers, Arville Messer Jr., of Kermit, W. Va., Brian (Jonie) Messer of Breeden, W. Va., Cleve Adkins of Breeden, W. Va.; sisters, Kim (John) Marcum of Laurel Creek, W. Va., Stacy Messer of Dunlow, W. Va., Tina Prince and Fannie Renae Adkins of Breeden, W. Va.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 4, 2004, 11 a.m., at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home, Warfield, Ky. with Ray Messer Jr., Paul Messer and Roger Justice officiating. Burial will follow at the Messer-Kirk Cemetery, Breeden, W. Va.

Georgia Trent
Georgia Ethel Keesee Trent, 90, of Gilbert, W. Va., died Sunday, February 29, 2004, at Logan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 18, 1913, she was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry and Elizabeth Zelia Keesee and her husband, Albert Ross "Bill" Trent, Jr., in 1980. She is survived by one brother, Robert Elster Keesee (Dottie) of Beckley, W. Va., a host of nieces and nephews, special friends and caregivers, Norma Trent, Tom White and Marcia White.
Ethel was a proud graduate of Marshall University in her hometown of Huntington, W. Va. When she married Bill on December 24, 1936, he brought her to Gilbert where she began a teaching/principal career in Mingo County Schools that brought more than 50 years of service to the Mingo County School system. She began her first teaching assignment at Glen Alum with colleagues Harry White and Helen White who helped her adjust to the different lifestyle she found in Gilbert as compared to Huntington at that time.
She later served as teacher and principal at Verner where her duties included keeping coal in the pot belly stove, water in the buckets, and the beginning of the first hot lunch program in southern West Virginia. She completed her full time teaching career at Gilbert Grade School where she retired in 1986, but as late as 1994 she was recognized as "Volunteer of the Year" at Gilbert Grade because she still reported there every day on a volunteer basis to help any student or teacher. Throughout her life she offered free tutoring to any student believing that everyone should make learning and serving God the priority in their life.
Ethel and Bill were baptized and joined the Presbyterian Church on December 20, 1953, at North Augusta, South Carolina. Ethel transferred membership to the Gilbert Presbyterian Church in August, 1998, after having attended there for many years and serving in many capacities in church leadership particularly Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and Presbyterian Women. She considered the church her family and stayed very active until her health made it impossible for her to attend regularly.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Mounts Funeral Home with funeral service conducted by Reverend Tom Schular at 11 a.m. Pallbearers will be family and friends, and burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Huntington, W. Va.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Gilbert Presbyterian Memorial Fund would be appreciated.
Patricia Griffin
Patricia L. Myers Griffin, 50, of Logan Center, formerly of Bruno, W. Va., passed away Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan, W. Va.
She was born October 15, 1953, in Iaeger, W. Va. to Janice Walker Myers of Bruno, W. Va. and the late James "JD" Myers.
The body will be cremated at the request of the family. A memorial service will be held at the Bruno Church of God at a later date.
Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert, W. Va., is in charge of arrangements.
Rev. Lawrence T. Copley Sr.
A celebration of life for the Rev. Lawrence Thurman Copley, Sr., 94, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon March 12, 2004, at the Heritage Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Tim Williams officiating.
The family will receive friends following the serve at the graveside.
Rev. Copley, formerly of 100 Bobo Street, Roebuck, S.C., died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, in the Self-Regional Medical Center in Greenwood.
Born in Wayne County, W. Va., on December 30, 1909, to the late Thomas Benton and Palyna Frances Smith Copley, he was the widower of Frances Dough Copley.
Rev. Copley pastored churches in West Virginia and later became employed in sales.
Surviving are his children, Anita Copley Emily of Roebuck, Wilma S. Ledford of Beckley, W. Va., June S. Ray of Williamson, W. Va., Sylvia S. Currier of San Dimas, Cal., Lawrence T. Copley, Jr. of Abingdon, Va. and Charles L. Stuart of Canada, Ky. and 34 grandchildren.
He is predeceased by four children, Jean Copley Wilson, Mabel Copley Hoskins, Leonard J. Stuart, Howard Hollowell; six brothers, Nebert, Oscar, Bert, Glen, Clarence and Fred Copley; six sisters, Bessie and Mabel Copley, Murlah C. Marcum, Florence C. Hancock, Gertie C. Fluty, Dorothy C. Calfee; and also predeceased by his wives, Jessie Jones Copley and Mildred Varney Copley.

Darrell Justice
Darrell James Justice, 53, of Meador, died Saturday, March 20, 2004, at Williamson Memorial Hospital, Williamson.
He was born Sept. 23, 1950, in Williamson, a son of the late John and Lizzie Hensley Justice.
In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by a son, Darrell James Justice; three brothers, Rusty Justice, Matt Justice and Roy Justice and one sister, Marie Stapleton.
He was a retired coal miner with Select Mining and a member of the Lone Riders of Boone County.
He is survived by Henrietta Justice of Sidney, Ky.; special companion, Eva Cox of Meador; one son, James (Kelly) Justice of Pleasantville, Ohio; three daughters, Angela (Wilson) Goad and Jody Justice, both of Charleston and Ranee (Roger) Young of Sidney; two brothers, John Justice Jr. and George (Judy) Justice, both of Thornville, Ohio; four sisters, Mildred (Denver) Smith of Thornville; Florine Hubbs and Helen Clark, both of Columbus, Ohio and Phyllis (Eddie) Mavis of Palatka, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Jetty Justice of Thornville; six grandchildren, Alecia and Amon Goad; Tyler and Travis Jude and Alex and Brandon Vagott; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, 2004, at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel, Toler, Ky., with Rev. Franklin Mounts officiating.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m., Monday, March 22, 2004, at the funeral home.

Virginia Moore
Virginia Moore, 88, of Matewan, W. Va., went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 1, 2004, after a long illness. She was at her home in the loving care of her family.
Born January 1, 1916, in Blacky, Va., to the late Newton C. Arnold and Nita Meadows Arnold, she was a member of the Delbarton Church of God at Delbarton, W. Va. Mrs. Moore was a 1933 graduate of Oakvale High School, Oakvale, W. Va.; a loving mother and grandmother; and a homemaker for 67 years.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Clarence Ray Moore; a son, Larry Eugene Moore; a grandson, Mark Whitney Smith; three brothers and one sister.
Surviving are her son, Dan R. Moore (Betty Jo) of Charleston, W. Va.; daughters, Parry Moore of Matewan, W. Va., Carolyn Surber (Larry) of Matewan, W. Va. and Judy Smith of Pineville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Angel Moore Mick of Charleston, W. Va., Daniel Moore Jr. of Forest Hills, Ky. and Shannon Cheek of Pineville, Ky.; three great grandchildren, Morgan Rae Mick of Charleston, W. Va.; Brad and Erica Venable, both of Pineville, Ky.; and a sister, Winnifred Lane of Buchannan, W. Va.

Vicie Hackney
Vicie Hackney, 85, of North Matewan, W. Va., passed away Monday, March 1, 2004, at Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Born May 8, 1918, in Ransom, Ky., to the late Harrison Hackney and Mary Smith Hackney, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the 5th Avenue Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jason Daniels; brothers, Ed, Cecil and Johnny Hackney; sisters, Fannie Smith, Mae Viras and Tilda Hackney.
Surviving are her son, Gene Willis (Goldie) Daniels of North Matewan, W. Va.; and one grandchild, Tracy Irene Daniels.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 5, 2004, 11 a.m., at Cornerstone Church at Hatfield Bottom, Matewan, W. Va. with Jim Ed Whitt and David Stratton officiating. Interment will follow at Alley Cemetery at Ransom, Ky. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Thursday evening at the church with services at 7 p.m.
Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Ky., has assisted the family with arrangements.
Ira Goble
Ira Goble, 89, of Chattaroy, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at the Appalachian Regional Hospital, South Williamson, Ky. Born August 31, 1914, in Martin County, Ky. to the late Andy Goble and Della Cornette Goble, he was a retired coal miner who mined coal for Howard Colleries, Red Jacket, Island Creek and Kermit Coal Company during his long career. Mr. Goble was honored in 2002 as Tug Valley's "King Coal." He was a member of Philadelphia United Baptist Church and often attended services at the Chattaroy Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of more than 56 years, Bertha Hughes Goble. Surviving are three sons, Toney (Beverly) Goble, Orlando, Fl., Lynn Goble, Waverly, Ohio, Gale (Jean) Goble, Charleston, W. Va.; and one daughter, Dorella Adair, Huntington, W. Va. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jerry Adair, Pam Lane, Steve Goble, Mark Goble, Tim Adair and Clark Goble and nine great grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Oscar Goble, Piketon, Ohio, Ernest Goble, Chillicothe, Ohio and James Goble of Waverly, Ohio and three sisters, Geneva Derifield, Oxford, Ga., Marie Silcott, Waverly, Ohio and Madaline Ingham, Chillicothe, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Weaver Mortuary. Rev. Gregory Whitlow will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher, W. Va.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 3, 6 - 8 p.m. at the mortuary.

Beatrice Chafin Mahon
Beatrice Chafin Mahon, 83, of Meador, W. Va., passed away Friday, March 12, 2004, at her home.
Born February 28, 1921, in McDowell County, W. Va., to the late Clint Chafin and Marie Blackburn Chafin, she was a homemaker. Beatrice was a member of Beech Creek Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, four sisters, and one grandchild, Craig Mahon.
Surviving are her husband, Troy Mahon of Meador, W. Va.; son, Darel Mahon of Beech Creek, W. Va. and his girlfriend, Mary Elizabeth; brother, Clinton Jr. Chafin of Idaho and Larry Chafin of Phoenix, Az.; and two grandchildren, Lyndsey Brooke and Micah Darel Mahon.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 14, 2004, 1 p.m., at Beech Creek Church of God with Rev. David Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at the Kennedy Cemetery at Beech Creek, W. Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 13, 2004, at the church starting at 6 p.m. with services beginning at 7 p.m.

Darrell Ray Bralley, 51, of Middleport, Ohio, formerly of Williamson, died on Thursday, March 4, 2004, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, W. Va.
