Louise C. Sims
SHINNSTON - Louise C. Sims, 84, of Fairmont, formerly of Springfield, Ohio,
died at 6 p.m. Friday, July 2, 1999, at the Arbors of Fairmont.
She was born Aug. 14, 1914, at Junior, a daughter of the late Charles F.
and SarahAlice Dumire Cooper.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Dick" Sims, in July of 1992.
Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Spot (Gladys) Williams, Belington, Mrs.
Harry (Arlene) McDonald, Bridgeport, Mrs. Kathryn "Kate" Ware and Mrs. Fred
(Hope) Caplinger, both of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters.
Mrs. Sims was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church,
Springfield. She was a member of Home City Chapter No. 258 Order of Eastern
Star, Springfield.
Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Harmer Funeral Home,
Shinnston. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday in Groveport, Ohio.
Ina P. Stout
WEST UNION - Ina P. Miller Stout, 90, of Homestead Avenue, West Union, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 1999, at her residence following an extended
illness.
She was born on Jan. 22, 1909, at Tague, Braxton County, a daughter of the
late Cameron and Lydia Carr Rollyson.
Surviving are one daughter, Lois F. Bourn, South Charleston; one son,
Charlie Frame, West Union; one brother, George K. Rollyson, Cross Lanes; 10
grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and
several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, George P. Frame, two brothers, Earl
and Ernest Rollyson, one sister, Ursla Rollyson, and one
great-granddaughter, Lindsey Nutter.
Mrs. Stout was a homemaker. She was a member of the West Union Chapter No.
56, Order of Eastern Star, and a member of Emmanuel United Methodist
Church, West Union. She was also an avid quilter.
Friends will be received from 6-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. Monday until
time of the service at 2 p.m. Monday at Spurgeon Funeral Home, West Union.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with
the Rev. Mike Rader officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Memorial
Park, West Union.
Joseph K. Turner
Joseph K. Turner, of Jensen Beach, Fla., died Sept. 19, 1997, in Jensen Beach.
He was born July 7, 1934, son of Roy R. and Beatrice Wilson Turner, Talbott
community.
His second wife, Beverly Turner, preceded him in death in December, 1995.
Surviving are his ex-wife, Floe Tress, Jupiter, Fla.; one son, Joseph K.
Turner, Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Kathy Jo Crowder,
Jacksonville, Fla., Kimberly Sue Turner, Jupiter, and Robin Lynn Sandell,
Jensen Beach; three grandchildren, Patrick Crowder, Tad Barker and Megan
Sandell; one sister, Charlotte E. Long, West Palm Beach; a brother, David
Steven Turner, West Palm Beach; and one maternal uncle, Hartman K. Wilson,
Bridgeport.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Rosa May Turner, in February
of 1947 and one paternal uncle, Fielden Turner, in May of 1999.
Mr. Turner attended Concord Grade School, a one-room school for eight
grades. He graduated from Bridgeport High School and attended Fairmont
State College briefly.
He was a member of the Methodist Church and a 32nd-degree Mason. He was a
builder and made furniture. He built several houses in the Clarksburg,
Bridgeport and West Palm Beach areas. He was a master craftsman.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Concord
cemetery, two miles outside Belington.
Mildred C. Werner
NORFOLK, Va. - Mildred Cutright Werner, 81, of Bapaume Avenue, died Friday,
July 2, 1999, in a local hospital.
Her husband, William Leon Werner, survives.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Joseph Long,
Greenville, N.C., and Linda and Waid Kidd, Chesapeake, Va.; three sisters,
Marie Smith, Zephyrhills, Fla., Thelma Moreland and June Helden, both of
Buckhannon; (and )three brothers, Marden, Gary and Dick Cutright, all of
Buckhannon.
Mrs. Werner was a member of Lafayette Presbyterian Church. She was also a
volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fraternal cemetery,
Belington. Arrangements by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Norfolk.
Thad R. Freisheim
PHILIPPI -- Thad R. Freisheim, 19, of Bel Air, Md., died Sunday, July 4, 1999, in the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
He was born Aug. 20, 1979, in Ft. Benning, Ga., a son of George Raymond and Willa Thomasine Humphreys Freisheim, Bel Air, Md.
Also surviving are two sisters, Wendy Freisheim, Colorado Springs, Colo., Rosalie Duffy and husband, Thomas J. Duffy, Mt. Laurel, N.J.; his paternal grandmother, Naomi J. Freisheim, Bel Air; one niece, Alysa Freisheim, Colorado Springs; aunts and uncles, Dave and Nancy Lugenbeel, Severn, Md., and Joseph and Laurie White, Glen Burnie, Md.; five cousins, Alex and C.J. White, Glen Burnie, Jennifer and Sean Duffy, all of Mt. Laurel.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, George S. Freisheim and by his maternal grandparents, Harold Hugh and Maude Skidmore Humphrey.
Mr. Freisheim was employed by Benfield Electric as an electrical apprentice. He had a love of baseball which began in little league with his father as his coach. He also enjoyed fishing and was devoted to his family and friends.
James D. Hurst
JANE LEW -- James Dale Hurst, 64, of Main Street, Weston, died Saturday, July 3, 1999, in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.
He was born Jan. 21, 1935, at Glenville, a son of the late Garland D. and Hazel Belle Reed Hurst.
Surviving are two brothers, Oral M. Hurst, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Kenneth S. Hurst, Weston; two nieces and five nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Harry S. Hurst.
Mr. Hurst was a chef for resorts in Pennsylvania.
There will be no visitation. His body will be cremated. Morris Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Clarinda M. McCartney
BUCKHANNON -- Clarinda May McCartney, 92, of 70 Hampton Road, Buckhannon, died at 7 a.m. Monday, July 5, 1999, at her home.
She was born May 28, 1907, in Pickens, a daughter of the late Henry Bachmann and Eliza Hamrick Bachmann.
In 1928, she married Bennett McCartney, who preceded her in death in 1966.
Surviving are two daughters, Mae Collins and Rebecca Jediny, both of Buckhannon; one son, William Eddie McCartney, Louisville, Ky.; 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Koon, Warren, Ohio.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Isaac F. McCartney and George Henry McCartney; one daughter, Luvadia McCartney Hickman; 15 brothers; one sister; one grandson, Gerrard McCartney; and one great-grandson, William McCartney.
Mr. McCartney was a homemaker and United Brethren.
Pearl F. Phillips
BUCKHANNON -- Pearl Francis Phillips, 92, of Buckhannon, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 16, 1906, in Indian Camp, a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Mary Viola Howes Huffman.
On Dec. 9, 1936, she married Freeman Phillips, who preceded her in death on April 21, 1961.
Surviving are six nieces, Louise Wheery, St. Marys, Viola Huffman, Nellie Bennett, Marian Cottle, Bonita Natz and Berta Thompson, all of Buckhannon; nine nephews, Stanley Huffman, Wooster, Ohio, Alen Huffman, Maryland, Aldace and Baily Huffman, both of Elkins, Berlin and Bobby Huffman, both of Buckhannon, Brian, Benjamin, and Bernard Huffman, all of Indian Camp; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by six brothers, Clarence, Averill, Elbert, Ashford, and Bailey Phillips, her twin brother, Jeffie Phillips, an infant brother, four nephews, Maurice, Wayne, Jackie and Marvin Huffman and one niece, Sharon Tucker.
Mrs. Phillips taught school in Upshur County. She attended West Virginia Wesleyn College. She was a member of the Womens Christian Temperance Union and the Indian Camp United Methodist Church.
The Rev. Durward W. 'Duke' Poling
SALEM -- The Rev. Durward Willis "Duke" Poling of Valley Street, Salem, died at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at Sunrise of Salem.
He was born July 1, 1914, in Elkins, a son of the late Irvin Jonas Poling and Dona Luella McGee Poling.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Della Boyles Poling.
Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Kermit and Patricia Poling, Parkersburg; two grandsons, David and Mikael Poling, Pennsboro; three great-grandchildren, Britny, Erik and Tiana Poling; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Alicia and Erica Baker; one sister, Helen Snider, Alexandria, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ivan Poling and one son, Daniel I. Poling.
Mr. Poling was a graduate of Elkins High School and earned his bachelor of arts degree from Salem College. He received his theological training from Bonebrake and United Theological seminaries. He held honorary degrees, doctor of divinity and doctor of religious arts, given in recognition of his pastoral achievements.
During World War I, he was employed by the Naval Shipyard in Newport News, Va. In 1945 he entered the ministry of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ (now United Methodist), and served as pastor of the Arden, Gassaway and Smithburg circuits: First E.U.B. Church in Salem, First E.U.B. Church in Grafton, Otterbein United Methodist Church in Nitro, and East Street United Methodist Church in Middlebourne, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Poling served in several executive positions during his years of ministry, including: secretary of the West Virginia Annual Conference (EUB-UM); editor of the West Virginia Conference Journal; president of the Taylor County Ministerial Association; coordinator of the Tyler County Cooperative Parish; member of the Board of Directors of the United Methodist Federal Credit Union and the West Central West Virginia Community Action Association; chairman of Conference Boards of Judicial and Court of Appeals, Evangelism, Annual Conference Sessions, and Ministerial Training. He was a youth camp pastor and counselor and delegate to five inter-denominational conferences.
He received several honors and recognitions, among which were: Tygart Valley District Soil Conservation Minister of the Year, 1996; the World Doctorhood Medal from the World University Roundtable (U.N. E.S.C.O.); and the rank of colonel from the Governor of Kentucky.
Mr. Poling was a commander of the Royal Order of Piast, and a knight of the Sacred Cup. The Eastern Orthodox Church awarded him the designation, "Doctor of Christian Service" and he was a member of the Society of Polish Nobles and the Order of Hereditary Nobility. He was a member of the Dynastic House Polanie-Patrikios where as a Prince of Gniezno he held the hereditary dignity, Duke of Bransk-Marmora. He was a patrician of the Eastern Roman Empire. He enjoyed the hobbies of gardening, reading, and rock collecting.
Friends will be received from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Denver Dickens conducting the service. Interment will be in Knights of Pythias cemetery.
Arthur 'Bus' Simmons
BUCKHANNON -- Arthur "Bus" Simmons, 77, of 8805 Edgewood Blvd., Tampa, Fla., died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Town and Country Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla.
He was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Sand Run, a son of the late James A. Simmons and Leaola Shipman Simmons.
His wife, Wanda Westfall Simmons, whom he married Dec. 31, 1949, survives.
Also surviving are one sister, Pauline Tenney, Buckhannon; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Leota Riley, Lemoyne Glass and Geraldine Kerrigan.
Mr. Simmons was an electrician at Ford Motor Co. and served in the Air Force during World War II. He was a life member and past commander of the Buckhannon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3663.
Carl R. Stewart
Carl R. Stewart, 88, of Route 4, Bridgeport, Lake Ridge Community, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following an extended illness.
He was born March 23, 1911, in Harrison County, a son of the late Robert and Delsie Jenkins Stewart.
He was married to Violet Juanita Trader, who preceded him in death in 1985.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth and John Stewart, both of Lake Ridge; two daughters, Mrs. Jimmy (Ellen) Fultineer, Lake Ridge, and Mrs. Ed (Janet) Jones, Port Orchid, Wash.; two adopted daughters, Rebecca J. Thompson, Lake Ridge, and Anita Irene Hubbard, Ontario, Canada; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; one half brother, Brooks Bramer, Anmoore; two half sisters, Arlene Bramer, Anmoore, and Elaine Westfall, Charleston; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Patty Fultineer and Delores Conrad; one son, Bobby Stewart; and one half brother, Terrance Bramer.
Mr. Stewart was a retired coal miner with 52 years of service having last worked for Bell Mining.
Friend will be received 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Davis Funeral Home, 443 W. Pike St., Clarksburg, where services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Thomas Horne officiating. Interment in Marshville cemetery.
