PHILIPPI -- Flossie Haller, 92, a resident of Arbovale, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at her residence.
She was born March 31, 1906 at Mt. Liberty, Barbour County, a daughter of the late Virgil Mattie Daugherty Wagner.
Her husband Roy "Jack" Haller, preceded her in death Sept. 10, 1989.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Haller, Jackson, Ohio and Robert Haller, Akron, Ohio; three daughters, Marie Fetters, Ellerslie, Md., Shirley Scharliger, Ridgeley, and Lynda Lease, Cumberland, Md.; one brother, Scott Wagner, Route 1, Belington; two sisters, Mildred Bartlett, Philippi, Vesta Weese, Belington; 24 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Delbert, Leonard, Russell and Fred Wagner, and two sisters, Dora Jones and Madge Everson.
Mrs. Haller attended the Church of Christ and was a member of the Arbovale Senior Citizens.
William J. Hurst
PENNSBORO Ñ William Jennings Hurst, 98, of Route 1, New Milton, Doddridge County, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at his residence.
He was born on July 2, 1899, near Grove community, Doddridge County, the son of the late Andrew and Mary Ellen Hines Hurst.
Surviving are four nephews, Clay Tallman, Montrose, Stokes Hurst Jr., West Union, Louis Hurst, Ashland, Ohio, and Addison Hurst, Berkeley Springs, and three nieces, Ruth Bowyer, Morgantown, Patricia Sue Wright, Alexandria, Va., and Lois Zakaib, Richmond, Va.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having been also preceded in death by four brothers, Stokes, Sherman, Ross and Hugh Hurst, and one sister, Hattie S. Tallman.
Mr. Hurst was a farmer.
Thelma E. Linger
BUCKHANNON -- Thelma Ellen Linger, 86, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at James River Convalescent Center, Newport News, Va.
Her husband, Rev. Ottis Linger, preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Ottis Linger Jr., South Charleston, and Donald E. Linger, Newport News; two sisters, Norma Jean Yost, Fairmont, and Ursuline Hamilton, Fountain Green, Utah; one brother, Nyle Sherbs, Fairmont; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Ronald Linger and Allen Linger.
Mrs. Linger was a native of Berryburg and had been a Newport News resident since 1975. She was a member of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church in Newport News, and along with her husband, served more than four decades with the West Virginia United Methodist Conference.
Dominick J. Oliverio
Dominick James Oliverio, 54, formerly of Clarksburg, and Parkview Towers, 60 North, 3rd Street, San Jose, Calif., died Monday evening, May 18, 1998, at Santa Clara Medical Center, Santa Clara, Calif.
He was born May 31, 1943, in Clarksburg, a son of Dominick Oliverio and Mary LeRoy Oliverio.
Also surviving are two brothers, David Alan Oliverio and Jerry Vincent Oliverio, and one sister, Donna Kay Nutter, all of Clarksburg, and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Mr. Oliverio graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1961 and from Boston College, School of Journalism, Boston, Mass. He was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran and a former member of St. John's Catholic Church and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarksburg.
Friends will be received from noon-9 p.m. Thursday at Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 W. Pike St., Clarksburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Giannamore as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross cemetery.
A Scriptural Wake service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Full military graveside rites will be held at the cemetery by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 573.
Mary L. Vallelonga
Mary L. Almato Vallelonga, 78, of O'Connor Street, Clarksburg, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in United Hospital Center following an extended illness.
She was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Reynoldsville, a daughter of the late Gedo Almato and Rose Straparo Almato Chiado.
Her husband, Joseph Vallelonga, whom she married April 10, 1948, survives.
Also surviving are one son, David J. Vallelonga, Bruceton Mills; three daughters, Cecila Ann Walker, Gloria Marie Patsy and Anita Jo Banish, all of Clarksburg; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and one brother, Joe Chiado, Clarksburg.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Larry Chiado, and one grandson, Frankie Lee Walker.
Mrs. Vallelonga was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Chapter No. 409, Women of the Moose, and Ladies Auxiliary Clarksburg Aerie No. 2353, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg Chapel, 443 W. Pike Street. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Cesidio Federico as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel.
Joann Ely
FAIRMONT -- Joann Ely, 40, of College Street, Barrackville, died Sunday afternoon, June 28, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Marion County, a daughter of Charles F. and Maxine Hardway Hullderman, Barrackville.
Her husband of 21 years, David Brent Ely, survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Christopher Brent Ely, Brian Todd Ely and Alan Randall Ely, all at home; one sister and brother-in-law, Roesmary and Marvin Faulkner, Fairmont; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Debi Hullderman, Bunner Ridge; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Mrs. Ely was a member of the Church of Christ in Barrackville. She worked at MooreÕs Auction Barn in Monumental and was a homemaker. She enjoyed raising roses, riding and taking care of her horse and collecting antique novelties.
Gertrude E. Reed
ALMA -- Gertrude E. Reed, 86, of Shirley, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, in Wetzel County Hospital, New Martinsville.
She was born Nov. 6, 1911, in Tyler County, a daughter of the late Jacob D. and Victoria White Smith.
Her husband, Kenneth Dale Reed, preceded her in death in 1977.
Surviving are two sons, Dennis L. Reed and Robert B. Reed, both of Shirley; one brother, Dale E. Smith, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two sisters, Wanda Smith, Parkersburg, and Arta Weekley, Wilbur; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Reed was a homemaker and a member of the Cedar Grove Church of Christ in Shirley.
Donald Shingleton
UNIONTOWN, Ohio -- Donald James Shingleton, 64, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Akron, Ohio.
He was born Oct. 18, 1933, in Harrison County, a son of Harold Shingleton and Cleo Cunningham Shingleton.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Darlene) Morrin, Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Chris (Donna) Bruner, North Canton, Ohio; one son, Tim, Canal Fulton, Ohio; one sister, Gwen; three brothers, Fred, Bob and June; and five grandchildren.
Mr. Shingleton was a teacher for Green schools system at Green, Ohio, retiring with over 30 years of service. He was a member of the Uniontown United Methodist Church.
Edward J. Walters
SALEM -- Edward J. "Chick" Walters, 81, of Route 3, Miletus community, died early Sunday morning, June 28, 1998, at United Hospital Center following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 16, 1916, near Bridgeport, a son of the late Herbert E. Walters and Edna B. Walters.
For the past 20 years, Mr. Walters made his home with Olan and Pauline Cumberledge, whom he referred to as "pop" and "mom."
The body will be cremated.
Lillian A. Zelinsky
PHILIPPI -- Lillian Anna Hamilton Zelinsky, 79, a resident of Route 1, Volga, died at 2:09 a.m. Sunday, June 28, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
She was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Taylor County, a daughter of the late Alexsander and Lillian Hetz Hamilton.
Her husband, Scotty Zelinsky, whom she married in July of 1943, preceded her in death in 1967.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Peggy) Nestor, Moundsville, and Mrs. Tim (Alexis) Payne, Volga, with whom she made her home; one son, Michael G. Zelinsky, Century 1; one brother, Arthur Hamilton, Wheeling; and 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Richard "Butch" Shroyer; one grandson, Timothy Scott Payne and one brother, Richard Hamilton.
In earlier years, Mrs. Zelinsky was a school teacher. She retired in 1983 as a social worker at Weston State Hospital. She was United Methodist.
Bertus M. Craig
KINGWOOD -- Bertus "Bert" Martin Craig, 90, of Kingwood, died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Preston Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 12, 1908, on the "Willow Spring Farm" at Snyder, Preston County, a son of the late Charles Arnold "Jay" and Mary Avice Martin Craig.
His wife of 63 years, Pauline Gilmore Craig, preceded him in death on March 28, 1997.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, LTC Jay A. and Anita Craig, Kingwood; one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and William Arnold, Petersburg, and four grandchildren, Amy Rexrode Berg and Robert Rexrode, both of Petersburg, and Kenneth and Christopher Craig, both of Kingwood.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charles W. Craig, Harold A. Craig and Thomas L. Craig, and five sisters, Virgie Everett, Ella Manown, Mable Gribble, Lula Carrico and Juanita Warfield.
Mr. Craig attended the Kingwood public schools and early in life was employed by the Kingwood Bakery and later by Mountain State Utilities. In 1941 he began work with Ruthbell Coal Corporation, where he worked as an electrician, machinist and superintendent until 1967 when the coal company was sold.
As a result of his ability as a woodworker, he was employed in 1967 with the Sheidow Bronze Corporation. He worked as a pattern maker until he retired in August 1973.
He was a member of the Preston Lodge 90 AF and AM, 32nd Degree, Knights of Pythias, the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department and the Wesley United Methodist Church in Kingwood.
