Lynda Koehler
WAUPUN - Lynda Koehler, 57, a resident of Harmony Manor, Waupun, died on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Waupun Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m., at Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun. The Rev. Ken Loerke will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Mound cemetery, Waupun.

Mrs. Koehler was born on March 15, 1943, in Portage, the daughter of Donald and Dorothy (Peterson) Martin. She was married on April 14, 1962, to Clemens Koehler in Waupun.

Mrs. Koehler was a 1961 graduate of Waupun High School. She resided in Waupun all her life, was employed by Wells Manufacturing, Fond du Lac, and later was owner/operator of the Morning Glory Dairy distributorship in Waupun with her husband Clem. She was most recently employed at Green Valley Enterprise, Beaver Dam.

Survivors include two sons, Michael (Karyn) Koehler, and Martin (Karen) Koehler, both of Waupun; her mother, Dorothy Martin, Waupun; six grandchildren, Heather, Megan, Brett, Holly, Austin and Quinlyn; four sisters, Nancy (Jerry) Rens, Brandon, Julia (Wynn Henderson) Martin, Dodgeville, Laurie (Mike) Schafer, Waupun, and Dottie Martin Voight, Rochester, Minn.; three brothers, Terry (Barb) Martin, Waupun, Peter (Mary) Martin, Mount Calvary and Donald (Dort DeWild) Martin, Waupaca; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, and her grandparents.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun, and on Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun.

Evelyn B. Hoppe
COLUMBUS - Evelyn B. Hoppe, 91, of 517 Folsom St., Columbus, died on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Columbus Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m., at Columbus United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Hobbins officiated. Burial was in Hillside cemetery, Columbus.

Mrs. Hoppe was born on June 3, 1909, in Troy, the daughter of John and Ida (Schubring) Sorg. She was married on May 31, 1930, to Alvin Hoppe in Troy.

Mrs. Hoppe received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from UW-Whitewater, then taught in country schools in Troy, Wilson Creek, Doylestown and Rio. She was a Columbus area resident since the 1940s and was an active member of Columbus United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the UMW, Esther Circle and the Readers Group.

Survivors include two sons, Gordon Hoppe, Columbus, and Maurice (Blythe) Hoppe Days Creek, Ore.; two daughters, Bernetta (Don) Pritchard, Fall River, and Joy (Ed) Smith, Menomonie, 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin, in 1978; three brothers, Howard, Earl and Glen; and two sisters, Arlene Nold and Fern Enge.

There was no visitation.

Memorials may be made to Columbus United Methodist Church for mission projects, or Columbus Community Hospital.

The Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus, served the family.

Tyler L. Bertel
MAYVILLE - Tyler L. Bertel, 29, of 272 S. John St., Mayville, died on Sunday, Jan, 28, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m., at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Mayville. The Rev. Edward Blonski will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Mayville.

Mr. Bertel was born on Sept. 23, 1971, in Beaver Dam, the son of James and Patty (Margelofsky) Bertel. He was married on April 26, 1997, to Nicole Walter, at St. Mary's Church, Mayville.

Mr. Bertel was a 1985 graduate of St. John's Lutheran Grade School, and a 1989 graduate of Mayville High School. He was employed by Superior Services, Horicon. He was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Mayville. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Nicole Bertel, Mayville; his father, Jim Bertel, Mayville; his mother, Patty Bertel, Mayville; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Aggie and Salty Walter, Mayville; three brothers, Todd Bertel, Mayville, Troy (special friend, Caroline Hutchinson) Bertel, Houston, Texas, and Trevor Bertel of the U.S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. J.F. Kennedy, Mayport, Fla.; niece, Natasha Bertel; nephew, Brennen Bertel (Tyler's Godchild); grandmother, Zatha Walter, Mayville; brother-in-law, Lonn (fiance, Jayne Pfitzinger) Walter, Juneau; best friends, Troy and Cindy Muche, Mayville; Tyler's golden retriever, Booner; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Margelofsky; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bertel; and Mr. Zeke Walter.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 3 p.m. until the time of service, St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Mayville.

Memorials may be made to the St. John's pew refinishing, or St. John's student activity fund.

Loretta Benike
FOX LAKE - Loretta "Red" Benike, 94, of Fox Lake, died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m., at Annunciation Parish Church, Fox Lake. The Rev. Michael Wild will officiate. Burial will be in Annunciation Parish cemetery, town of Trenton.

Mrs. Benike was born on Feb. 21, 1906, in the town of Westford, the daughter of Frank and Augusta (Braker) Ptaschinski. She was married on July 27, 1926, to Lester Benike at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam.

Mrs. Benike and her husband owned and operated Benike Boats on Fox Lake. She was a member of Annunciation Parish Church, Fox Lake.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Alice Ptaschinski; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester; two sisters, Hilda Toebe and Caroline Kennedy; and two brothers, Fred and Albert Ptaschinski.

Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 1, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at Annunciation Parish Church, Fox Lake.

The Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake, is serving the family.

John U. Burgbacher
HANCOCK, Mich - John U. Burgbacher, 87, of Hancock, Mich., formerly of Beaver Dam, died on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Hancock, Mich.

The funeral was held on Saturday, Jan. 27, in Hancock, Mich. The Rev. Shawn Burgbacher officiated. Burial was in Hancock, Mich.

Mr. Burgbacher was born on March 16, 1913, in Hancock, Mich., the son of Carl and Mary (Marx) Burgbacher. He was married on Oct. 21, 1939, to Lydia M. Grasseschi.

Mr. Burgbacher owned and operated the Hollywood Tavern in Hancock, and was an active volunteer firefighter for the city of Hancock Fire Department for many years. He was a member of the Hancock Order of Eagles. He also worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hancock. He had lived in Beaver Dam for over 10 years with his son and daughter-in-law and was a member of the Praise Assembly of God Church while here.

Survivors include two daughters, Anne (Ed) Newman, De Pere, and Mary (Joseph) Rossi, Houghton, Mich.; two sons, John (Diane) Burgbacher, Reeseville, and Jerry (Jill) Burgbacher, Little Chute; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, William Burgbacher, Hancock, Mich.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia; one granddaughter, Shannon; three brothers, Carl, Rueben and Christian; and three sisters, Gert, Lillian and Marian.

Friends called on Friday, Jan. 26, in Hancock, Mich.

Memorials may be made to the Hancock Volunteer Fire Department, in memory of John U. Burgbacher.

John A. Gahlman
HARTFORD - John A. Gahlman, 97, of Hartford, died on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at South Shore Manor, St. Francis.

Burial was in St. Kilian cemetery, Hartford.

Mr. Gahlman was born on May 14, 1903, in Clyman, the son of Antone and Anna (Lucas) Gahlman. He was married on May 29, 1934, to Margaret Scholtes at St. Kilian Church.

Mr. Gahlman had lived in Hartford since 1944 and had been employed at Chrysler Corp. for more than 42 years. Upon retiring from Chrysler, he worked part time for the city of Hartford for more than 14 years. He was a charter member of the Hartford Senior Friends and a member of St. Kilian Church and its Holy Name Society.

Survivors include three sons, Dean Gahlman and Gerald (Patricia) Gahlman, both of Hartford, and Carl "Butch" (Mary) Gahlman, Racine; two daughters, Mary Joan (Milton) Fuiten and Carol (James) Nyswonger, both of Hartford; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Gahlman, Beaver Dam, Irma Gahlman, Clyman, and Veronica Multhauf, Neosho; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; six brothers, Ben, Charles, William, Anthony, Raymond and Edwin; and two sisters, Mary Haase and Loretta Gahlman.

Memorials may be made to the St. Kilian Building Fund or the School Endowment Fund.

Virginia E. Marquardt-Schroeder
HORICON - Virginia E. Marquardt-Schroeder, 88, of Horicon, died on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m., at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Mary Mail will officiate. Burial will be in Oakhill cemetery, Horicon.

Mrs. Marquardt-Schroeder was born on June 7, 1912, in Beloit, the daughter of Clayton and Grace (Ricks) Kenzie. She was married on April 5, 1941, to Waldemar Marquardt in Beloit. She was married on Feb. 14, 1961, to Lawrence Schroeder in Horicon.

Mrs. Marquardt-Schroeder was a 1930 graduate of Beloit High School and a 1934 graduate of Milwaukee State Teachers College (UWM), with a degree in music education. In 1936 she taught vocal music in the Horicon Public Schools, sponsoring many music programs and operettas. She taught until her marriage to Waldemar Marquardt in 1941. After the death of her first husband in 1955, she went back to teaching elementary music in rural Dodge County and Mayville schools. She retired from teaching in 1975, continuing to reside in Horicon. She was one of the oldest members of the Horicon American Legion Auxiliary, joining in 1941. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of the Horicon community throughout her life.

Survivors include four sons, Clayton (Karen) Marquardt, Springfield, Ill., Claude (Mary) Marquardt, Cedarburg, Waldemar (Toni) Marquardt, Oglesby, Ill., and Paul (Susan) Marquardt, Independence, Mo.; two grandsons, Steven and David Marquardt; six granddaughters, Tarri, Erica, Danielle, Virginia, Jacqueline and Nicole; one sister, Suzanne Willmer, Beloit; nieces,nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Waldemar Marquardt; her second husband, Lawrence Schroeder; an infant granddaughter, Anita Marquardt, in 1975; and two sisters, Catherine Meyer, in 1984, and Leota Kenzie, in 1994.

Jacob J. Posthumus Jr.
Jacob John Posthumus Jr., 71, of 906 S. Lincoln Ave., Beaver Dam, died on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Beaver Dam Care Center.

The funeral will be held on Friday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. David Bode will officiate. Burial will be in Veterans cemetery, Union Grove.

Mr. Posthumus was born on Jan. 17, 1930, in Blue Island, Ill., the son of Jacob and Maggie (Vander Meer) Posthumus. He was married on June 12, 1976, to Darlene Binder in Beaver Dam.

Mr. Posthumus was a resident of Beaver Dam for many years. He owned and operated Rosewood Landscaping and the Owl's Nest in Fox Lake, and managed the Gilbert Court senior apartment complex in Elkhorn. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of the John E. Miller American Legion Post No. 146, Beaver Dam, the Clarence Keske VFW Post of Beaver Dam and a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. He enjoyed spending time outdoors,observing nature's splendor. He was also an avid Chicago Bears and Indy race car fan.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Posthumus, Beaver Dam; two sons, Jacob John (Susan) Posthumus III, Crown Point, Ind. and James (Kathy) Posthumus, New Lennox, Ill.; one daughter, Kathy (Nick) Laphen, Frankfort, Ill.; one step-son, Michael (Kathleen) Hyne, Appleton; two step-daughters, Michele Drayton, Chicago, and Pamela (Charles) Klepper, Greenville, Tenn.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four sisters, Elizabeth Langland, Alsip, Ill., Effie (Ebbs) Haan, Worth, Ill., Marge (Ed) Buikema, and Evelyn Posthumus, both of South Holland, Ill.; six sisters-in-law, Henrietta Posthumus, Illinois, Dyvonne (Howard) Loker, Pembine, Janice (John) Frey, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Bettie Peters, Connie Binder, and Donna (Ronald) Nehmer, all of Beaver Dam; two brothers-in-law, Rodney Binder, Fox Lake, and Lester Binder, Beaver Dam; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Louis Posthumus; and one brother-in-law, Dale Peters.
