William N. Slinger
CAMBRIA - William "Buck" N. Slinger, 77, of Cambria, died on Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Columbus Community Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, Cambria. The Rev. Julie Water Du will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Cambria American Legion Post at the church following the service.
Mr. Slinger was born on Aug. 31, 1923, in the town of Springvale, on the Slinger homestead, the son of John and Loretta Catherine (Heanski) Slinger. He was married
on Feb. 5, 1949, to Margaret Voegel, at First Presbyterian Church, Cambria.
Mr. Slinger was a very active member of the American Legion Post in Cambria, holding various offices, was instrumental in starting and continuing the "Avenue of Hero's" in the Cambria cemetery, which draws numerous people from all over the state to view during Memorial Day weekend. He was a charter member of the Cambria Kiwanis, he and his brother started the Cambria Ski Hill back in the early 60's, and he was past president of the Cambria cemetery Board and a retired Cambria fire fighter.
He enjoyed traveling even when his children were young and had gone to Europe six times to trace his family tree, for which he had records going back to 1563. When it came to playing cards, "Buck" was always available to fill a chair for a friendly game.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Slinger, Wyocena; his children, Bill (Gloria) Slinger, Cambria, and their children, Andy of Madison, and Monica of Cambria, Debbie (Michael) Cross, Jefferson, and John (Marla) Slinger, Cambria, and their children, Ryan, Bridget and Brock of Cambria; his brothers, Frank (Mary) Slinger, Columbus, and Riley of Cambria; his sisters, Margaret "Sally" Tessmann, Randolph, Loretta "Dolly" (Ellis) Foulkes, Fall River, Jennie Mae (Maurice) Jones, Cambria; close friends, Bill and Dori Vande Hey, Prairie du Sac; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, David, Chester, Joseph, Temp, Delburne, Robert and Jack; and one sister, Sylvia Rhode.
Friends may call on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at First Presbyterian Church, Cambria.

Selma C. Lindert
MENOMONEE FALLS - Selma C. Lindert, 99, of Messner Manor Senior Housing, Menomonee Falls, formerly of 319 Henninger St., Mayville, died on Monday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Linden Grove Nursing Home, Menomonee Falls.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m., at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, town of Hubbard. The Revs. Bond Haldeman and W. Sallach will officiate. Burial will be in Hustisford cemetery.
Mrs. Lindert was born on March 30, 1901, in Lomira, the daughter of Albert and Helena (Pade) Friedrich. She was married
on Oct. 8, 1921, to Ben Lindert in the town of Hubbard.
Mrs. Lindert was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church, town of Hubbard. She served St. Michael's Church as organist for over 60 years. She was also a member of St. Michael's Ladies Aid and the Mayville Garden Club.
Survivors include five nieces, Jan (John) Blaszak, Menomonee Falls, Elaine (Ken) Kaul, Cartersville, Ga., Norma (Gilbert) Falkenthal, and Marian (Robert) Scharnell, both of Hustisford, Lorraine (Orville) Nehls, Juneau; one nephew, Donald (Lois) Dornfeld, Illinois; great-nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Irvin.

Brandon A. Buss
WATERLOO - Brandon A. Buss, 7, of Waterloo, was pronounced dead on Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at UW-Hospital, Madison, following an accident at Crystal Lake, Lodi, Columbia County.
The funeral will be held on Friday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo. The Rev. Robert Kosky will officiate. Burial will be in Washington cemetery, town of Portland.
Master Buss was born on July 12, 1993, in Columbus, the son of Randall and Susan (Beal) Buss.
Master Buss was a student at Waterloo Elementary School, having just started kindergarten. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo.
Survivors include his parents, Randy and Sue Buss, Waterloo; one brother, Ryan Buss, at home; maternal grandparents, Allen (Donna) Beal, Waterloo; paternal grandparents, Kenneth (Betty) Buss, Columbus; paternal great-grandparents, Erwin (Hazel) Buss, Waterloo; aunts, uncles, one cousin, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents.

Patricia J. Berk
HORICON - Patricia "Penny" Jean Penington Berk, 74, of Horicon, died on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, at her home, after fighting cancer for 12 years.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m., at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Horicon.
Mrs. Berk was born on Jan. 24, 1926, in Industry, Ill., the daughter of Ferris W. and Eva M. (Burnham) Penington. She was married
in 1952, to Martin A. Berk, in Rock Island, Ill.
Mrs. Berk was a 1944 graduate of Adair Illinois High School. She joined the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps at the Moline Illinois Public Hospital School of Nursing. In 1974, she graduated as an RN. In 1950 she graduated as one of two members of the first X-ray technicians class from Moline Public Hospital.
She moved with her family to Horicon in 1963. She was a board member and served in various offices of the former Mental Health Association in Dodge County. In 1979, while serving on the Mental Health board, she was instrumental in organizing and starting the Daybreak Group home in Horicon, was a member of the Daybreak board since its inception and had served as president, vice president, treasurer and secretary of the board until her death. She was a den mother when her sons were in Cub Scouts, a member of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Horicon, since moving to Horicon in 1963. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Guild, a past member of the Altar Guild and the LWML. She enjoyed attending Bible study.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Martin A. Berk, Horicon; four children, Tamara S. (Jan) Karlstrand, Cottage Grove, Minn., John N. Berk, Mayville, Marcia K. Steffen, Orange Park, Fla., and Robert K. Berk, Seal Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren, Erik Steffen, and Allison, Peter and Thomas Karlstrand; three sisters, Margaret (Cecil) Baylor, Lima, Ohio, Marge (Donovan) Herndon, Wickenburg, Ariz., and Norma (Kermit) Danner, Macomb, Ill.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ferris and Eva Penington; and two brothers, Lt. Col. Richard W. Penington, and Roland W. Penington.
Memorials may be made to either Hillside Hospice Care, The American Cancer Society, The National Cancer Research Institute, St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Horicon, or the charity of one's choice.

Dorothea L. Mueller
Dorothea L. Mueller, of 803 S. University Ave., Beaver Dam, died on Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m., at First Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service, at the church.

Harvey G. Veenhuis
WAUPUN - Harvey G. Veenhuis, 82, of 120 Gateway Drive, Waupun, died on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital, Milwaukee.
The funeral will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 11 a.m., at Emmanuel Reformed Church, Waupun. The Rev. Richard L. Bawinkel will officiate. Burial will be in Alto cemetery, Alto.
Mr. Veenhuis was born on March 14, 1918, in the township of Waupun, the son of John and Jennie (DeMotts) Veenhuis. He was married
on June 7, 1940, to Margaret R. Vande Zande, in Sheboygan.
Mr. Veenhuis attended Madison rural schools for eight years. He had been a resident of Waupun since 1951. He was a member of the United Men of Praise, the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Waupun, was on the church council and served as the church custodian for 32 years. He owned and operated a custodial supply business since 1959.
Survivors include his wife, of 60 years, Margaret, Waupun; two sons, Jerry (Carol) Veenhuis, and Keith Veenhuis, both of Brookfield; one daughter, Sharon (Arden) Kok, Waupun; four grandsons; six great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother; and one sister.

Mary C. Ellis
FORT MYERS, FLA. - Mary Catherine Ellis, 54, of Fort Myers, Fla., died on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, in Fort Myers.
A private memorial service was held in Florida with her family, at the Hope Hospice Center.
Mrs. Ellis was born on Nov. 17, 1945, the daughter of Roland and Viola (Callies) Michael. She was married
on Oct. 16, 1965, to James N. Ellis.
Mrs. Ellis grew up in Lowell and attended Salem Lutheran Church. She and her husband lived in Wisconsin until 1982, when they moved to Fort Myers, Fla. She worked for many years as a CNA at the Columbus and Lodi Nursing Homes. While living in Florida, she managed a deli in Fort Myers.
Survivors include her husband, James N. Ellis, Fort Myers, Fla.; four daughters, Lisa K. Ellis, Sun Prairie, Lori C. (Daniel) Hauptli, Lowell, Kelly R. Ellis, Fort Myers, Fla., and Susan R. Ellis, Menomonie; six grandchildren, Abi Ellis, Heather Ellis, AJ and Amber Humphries, Shelby and Lukas Hauptli; five step-children, Jan Elkind, Joyce Waters, Jim Ellis, Julie Anable, and Jerry Ellis; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; aunts; uncles; and one grandchild.

Angeline R. Koerner
Angeline "Ella" R. Koerner, 94, of 803 S. University Ave., Beaver Dam, formerly of Burnett, died on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at 11 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Daniel Massie will officiate. Burial will be in Burnett Central cemetery.
Mrs. Koerner was born on Oct. 7, 1905, in Beaver Dam, the daughter of Paul and Josephine (Malski) Bartell. She was married
on Nov. 22, 1927, to Carl Koerner in Beaver Dam.
Mrs. Koerner worked at Weyenberg Shoe Factory. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam.
Survivors include two sons, Edwin (Geneva) Koerner, Fox Lake, and Roland Koerner, Burnett; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1963; and one son, Robert, in 1951.

Shirley A. Smith
TAMPA, Fla. - Shirley Ann Smith, 66, of Sebring, Fla., died on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Tampa General Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m., at Morris Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Eugene Fernsler will officiate.
Mrs. Smith was born in Columbus.
Mrs. Smith moved to Homestead, Fla. in 1973. She was the former owner and operator of Subs and More Restaurant in Davie, Fla. She moved to Sebring in 1993 from Homestead and was a waitress for Charlies Family Restaurant, retiring in July. She was of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn (Greg) Byrd, Smyrna, Ga., and Deborah (Ralph) Gross, Sebring, Fla.; three sons, Robert (Nancy) Dulaney, Highlands Ranch, Colo., Dennis Dulaney, Hanover Park, Ill., and David Dulaney, Sebring, Fla.; her father, Harold (Tuffy) Rahn, Juneau; five brothers, Harold Rahn, Juneau, Larry Rahn, Peoria, Ariz., Kevin Rahn, Oshkosh, Ray Rahn, Madison, and Ross Rahn, Horicon; four sisters, Joyce Schlieve, Horicon, Donna Farrow, Lowell, and Nathalie Schwmann and Bonnie Gibson, both of Reeseville; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Gaile McClure Parent, 85, died on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, in Wisconsin Dells.
