Maxine Bratland, 81,
SUPERIOR —Maxine Faith Bratland, 81, Port Wing, died Saturday, September 21, 2002, in the Chris Jensen Nursing Home in Duluth, Minn. She was born June 5, 1921, in Port Wing to George Theodore and Catherine (Ober) Froney.
She graduated from high school in Washburn and she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Northwestern University in Chicago. Maxine completed her Master's level coursework in Special Elementary Education at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fosston, Minn.; St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Duluth; attended St. Michael's Catholic Church in Iron River, and was the past president of the Minnesota Education Association.
She began her teaching career in San Diego, California and went on to spend the rest of her career teaching in Biwabik, Minnesota where she was very active with the Minnesota Education Association. She retired from teaching in 1978. During the same year, she married Melvin Jerome Bratland from Fosston, Minnesota, where they lived until he died in 1990. While there, she wrote and illustrated educational children's books as a hobby, gardened, wrote diabetic cooking recipes and began the Melvin Bratland Asbestos Foundation. Maxine moved to Duluth in 1994 and continued to be an avid reader of history, the arts, politics, current events and a contributor and advocate for animal rights and Pet Therapy.
Maxine was a lifelong champion for the recognition, respect and preservation of our fundamental human and civil rights. She understood this dignity as intrinsic to the founding origins of our American Constitution and the beginning of a great Democracy forged from a struggling nation that shaped itself form this vision.
As an individual person and as an American citizen, she so believed in her First Amendment rights that for many years in her teaching career, she courageously held her own counsel and stood her ground by choosing not to join the Minnesota Teacher's Union. She firmly exercised her right to choose "the terrible pearl of great price of such freedoms" and did not back down in the face of personal ridicule and professional alienation. Maxine Faith Bratland would now want us to remember her and our own lives by: The Beatitudes, the St. Francis Prayer of Peace and the Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
