Esther Pollari
SUPERIOR — Esther E. M. Pollari, 96, Maple, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on June 15, 1906, in Marengo, to Charles and Anna (Lehtimaki) Mattson and had lived in Maple most of her life.
She had been a correspondent for the Evening Telegram. She was a longtime member of the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church in Maple, a former PTA President and an honorary lifetime member of the United States Air Force. Esther and her husband Ted enjoyed traveling and sightseeing and had visited 48 of the 50 states.
Esther is survived by two daughters, Delores Pellman, Maple, and Karen (Ronald) Simpson, Augusta, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Theodore, a son Calvin, and a son-in-law Carl Pellman.
Visitation was after 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Superior; and will continue at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 1, in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service, with the Rev. Elmer Hokkanen officiating.
Interment will be in the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery.
Pallbearers for the service will be Jim and Jack Pellman, Richard Harms, Lee Olson, and Doug and Noah Seis.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, and Duane Crider, Jim Hanninen, Les Krumm, Ronald Simpson, and George Setzke.
Robert Marten
LORETTA-DRAPER —Robert D. Marten, 71, Butternut, formerly of Loretta, died Tuesday July 30, 2002, at his home. He was born on December 1, 1930, in Eau Claire, the son of Art and Lulu (Miland) Marten.
He graduated from high school in Eau Claire. On July 1, 1950, he married Lettie Knitter. In 1968 the couple moved to Loretta where they lived until moving to Butternut two years ago. Marten worked in the grocery business for over 20 years for National Food in both Eau Claire and Minnesota and then worked for the Town of Draper for almost 20 years. He loved the outdoors, and will be especially remembered for his love of bear hunting.
He is survived by his wife Lettie of Butternut, three sons: Duane (Jean) Marten of Winter, Douglas Marten of Red Granite, and Donald (Sherri) Marten of Prentice, two daughters: Debra (John) Rymarkiewicz of Cornell and Diane (Don Murphy) Heath of Butternut, two brothers: Percy (Gladys) Marten of Fall Creek and Richard (Marlys) Marten of Eleva, 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Dennis, and his sister lone Adams.
A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. today from Calvary Lutheran Church in Loretta. Rev. Brian Crocker will officiate.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of the service today at the church.
Private interment will take place at the Draper Cemetery in Draper.
The Novitzke Funeral Home, Park Falls, is handling the arrangements.
Keegan Rae Melek
WASHBURN — Baby Keegan Rae Melek, Washburn, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Children's Hospital, in Minneapolis. He was born June 7, 2002, in Duluth, Minn., the son of Shawn and Brooke (Hansen) Melek.
He is survived by his parents, Shawn and Brooke, Washburn; brother, Jacob Thomas Sherman; paternal grandparents, Susan Sabre, La Pointe; and James Melek, Minneapolis; maternal grandparents, Robert and Jackie Hansen, Bayfield; paternal great-grandparents, Hollis and Lotrraine Sabre, Big Lake, Minn.; and aunts, uncles, great-aunts, and great-uncles.
He was preceded in death by his uncle, Mark Hansen; maternal grandfathers, Edward Posz and Hans Hansen; maternal grandmother, Evelyn Posz and Beulah Hansen; paternal grandparents, Mary Jane Melek, and Harvey and Hazel McKeen; and a cousin, Tony Ludin.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bayfield Pavilion, with Pastor David Saetre officiating.
Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Bayfield Pavilion.
Arrangements are by the Bratley Funeral Home, Washburn.
Elsie Faliski
Elsie J. Faliski, 90, Ashland, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born March 14, 1912, in Ashland, the daughter of August and Maria Johnson.
She graduated from Ashland High School in 1930. In April of 1931, Elsie married John J. Faliski. She worked for the Ashland City Engineer, Jared Day, for a short time. For 25 years, Elsie worked for Born's Jewelry Store, in Ashland. She was a member of Saron Lutheran Church and several of the church's organizations Elsie enjoyed reading and crocheting.
She is survived by a daughter, Janet Brown, of Kenai, Alaska; a daughter-in-law, Corrine Faliski, Madison; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John on November 15, 1997; son, Tom in 1975; one brother; and six sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Frost Home for Funerals, in Ashland, with Rev. James Kasperson officiating.
Interment will take place in Mt. Hope Cemetery, in Ashland.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, on Monday, at the funeral home.
Robert Carlson
Robert Orville Carlson, 84, 72370 State Highway 13, Ashland, died Saturday, August 3, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Ashland. He was born October 24, 1917, in Ashland, the son of Gustave F. and Anna K. (Johnson) Carlson.
In 1937 he graduated from Ashland High School and went on to receive college and vocational training. He was a US Navy, World War II veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre. On April 10, 1947, he married Carol Dahlquist in Ashland. From 1951 to 1971 he worked for the DuPont Company in Barksdale. From 1971 to 1981 he owned and operated his own upholstery business in the Town of Barksdale.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Ashland and the Ashland Elks Lodge. He was a former member of the Sons of Norway and UCT (United Commercial Travelers). His hobbies included vegetable and flower gardening, camping, singing and playing the organ.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Carlson of the Town of Barksdale; sons, Kevin (Patti) Carlson of Herbster; and Kyle (Ann-Marie) Carlson of Superior, grandson, Corey (Tracey) Carlson, Mikana; great-grandchildren, Justin and Cassandra Carlson of Mikana; sister, Phyllis Wigg of Plainwell, Mich.; brother, David Carlson of Queensland, Australia; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara Carlson; a son, Barry Carlson; sisters, Olga Blakesly and Doris Barry; brothers, Clarence, George, Edward, Carl, Albert, Van and Erhardt Carlson.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Frost Home For Funerals in Ashland. Lay Minister David Froiland will officiate.
Visitation will be from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Cremation will follow with the Ashland Crematory Service.
A family inurnment and graveside service will be held in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ashland at a later date.
Martha Jouppi, 86,
Martha Hilma Elizabeth (Nuutinen) Jouppi was born March 13, 1916, in North York, the daughter of Eric and Ida (Karyala) Nuutinen. She went to her heavenly home surrounded by her loving family Aug. 3, 2002.
Martha grew up on the family farm and attended the rural Section Five School near Minersville. At the age of 17, she moved to Minneapolis and then to Chicago, where she worked as a maid. It was in Chicago, that Martha met, fell in love with, and married her devoted husband, William. They were married on Aug. 28, 1941. Martha was an avid gardener, skilled seamstress, wonderful cook, and baker, friend to many, loving mother and devoted wife. She loved entering her fine goods at the annual Ashland County Fair, where she won many blue ribbons and prizes.
She is survived by her husband, William of North York, six children: Dennis (Carolyn Jouppi, Bloomer; Jane Jouppi, Chippewa Falls, Lorraine (Robert) Schutte, Highbridge, Sharon (Kenneth) Musselman, Highbridge, Shirley (Tom) Long, Marengo, and Darryl Jouppi, Minneapolis, Minn., 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two sisters: Jennie Jokinen, Ashland, and Lempi “Lembe” Luoma, North York, two sisters-in-law: Eleanor Nuutinen, Ashland, and Mary Jouppi, Florida, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters: Elsie Besonen, Ida Warren and Ada Nuutinen, and eight brothers: William Nuutinen, Herman Nuutinen, August Nuutinen, Eric Nuutinen, Arvo Nuutinen, Paul Nuutinen, Wilho Nuutinen and Hermani Nuutinen.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Finnish Apostolic Church in Marengo with Calvin Rengo and Edwin Kumpula officiating. Interment will be in the Highbridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the church and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
The Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland is assisting the family.
