Johnson, Thomas A.
MADISON - Thomas A. Johnson, age 57, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg. Tom was born in Racine to Norman and Mary (Olson) Johnson, on April 18, 1951. At age five, he moved with his family to Madison where Tom grew up enjoying hunting, fishing and many sports. He graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1969. In June of 1970, Tom had a serious motorcycle accident that left him partially paralyzed and changed his life. Despite his disability, Tom continued to enjoy hunting, fishing and spectator sports. He loved cars and being behind the wheel. He started his career as a truck driver and later worked at Lettercraft Press for 25 years as a salesman and manager. Survivors include his mother and father; his two children, Jeffery and Samantha; his brother, John and his wife Connie and their two daughters, Hannah and Heidi, of Elkhorn; and a sister, Becky of Corvallis, Oregon. A memorial service will be held at COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 326 S. Segoe Rd., on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lin Grace Rohr officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to HospiceCare, Inc., 5395 E. Leiske (Osborn), Mavis Rae
BARNEVELD - Mavis Rae Leiske, age 62, passed away on Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 22, 1946, daughter of Julius R. and Margarette R. (Thomas) Osborn. She is survived by her mother, Margarette of Barneveld; daughter, Rosa (Kirk) VanMeter of South Jordan, Utah; daughter, Julie Schmidt of Sheboygan; granddaughters, (Julie) Sarrah, Layla, and Valorie; grandsons, (Julie) August and Evan; sister, Evelyn (Jim) Mead of Jefferson; sister, Janet (Jim) Noble of Hudson; sister, Bev (Charlie) Beemer of Union City, Mich.; sister, Phyllis (David) Niesen of Cross Plains; sister, Ramona (Ken) Palzkill of Dodgeville; sister, Shirley (Bill) Kieffer of Baraboo; brother, Thomas Osborn of Barneveld; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Her father Julius preceded her in death in 1965. A private memorial service was held for the immediate family and close friends on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at the THOMAS FAMILY FARM in Barneveld. We would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time.
Manke, William Allen "Bill"
MADISON - William "Bill" Allen Manke, age 67, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at his home in Madison after celebrating a final goodbye party the day before with friends and family at his favorite Lake Michigan beach in Racine. Bill was a kind, generous and wise teacher whose light has been shared with thousands over the years. He was born on Feb. 26, 1941, in Racine, the only child of Albert and Myrtle (Peterson) Manke. His family (including his grandmother Peterson and uncle Floyd) impressed upon him at an early age the value of education and a love for exploration and curiosity. He often shared stories of his youth with a sense of gratitude. He graduated from Racine Horlick High School in 1959. On Aug. 18, 1963, he was united in marriage with his high school sweet heart Mary Jo Peterson of Racine. They moved to Madison for Mary Jo to begin her teaching career and Bill to continue his studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Bill graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1966. He immediately landed a contract with the Madison Metropolitan School District to begin teaching biology at Lincoln Middle School. Bill was recognized for his desire and ability to connect with even the most difficult students. Many of the staff there remained his life long friends. When Lincoln school closed, Bill transitioned his career to West High School where he was hired as a chemistry teacher. At West, he thrived due to the various opportunities available to him. At one point, when the Madison graduation requirements changed from one year of science to two, Bill realized that many kids would have difficulty meeting these criteria. He rose to the challenge by creating an applied science curriculum. This allowed students to participate in the development of their studies based on their own individual interests. It was a great success. Throughout his teaching career Bill taught all of the different high school science courses - Earth science, applied science, biology, chemistry, and physics. He also helped fill in vacancies throughout other Madison high schools. Later on in his career at West High, Bill took over as coordinator of the audiovisual department, where his love for technology was extremely well utilized. (We would be remiss to not mention his love for nearly all things produced by Apple Computer). Additionally, he helped with the Science Olympics team, taught in the traffic safety department, ran drop-in programs, headed social activities and guided the year book club - all with much pride and enthusiasm. Bill also loved the outdoors and would often be found planting or digging. Even though he knew and loved most species, his favorite tree was the Ginkgo. Over 40-plus years he had planted and given away hundreds of these trees throughout the country. It's rumored that he even tried to name one of his sons Ginkgo. Love for the outdoors also led to his long-time passion of photography, were he amassed a large portfolio of beautiful images - wildlife being his favorite subject. Bill was baptized at Atonement Lutheran Church in Racine, and became a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church when he and Mary Jo moved to Madison. Bill has been active at Good Shepherd for 45 years often helping in the technology side of the ministry. Although he had many passions, his greatest love was for his family - his wife Mary Jo; sons the Rev. Christopher (Donna) of Wauwatosa and Matthew of Boston; and his grandchildren Averie, Noah and Lilly. His expression of love, care and curiosity lives on in them. A memorial service for Bill Manke will be held at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5701 Raymond Road, Madison, on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 4 p.m. A visitation will precede the service at 2:30 p.m., and a celebration dinner will follow the service. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be given to The Leukemia Research Foundation, Madison West High School Science Department, or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Bill's family would also like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Oncology/Hematology Department and ICU at UW Hospital who provided outstanding care and support to Bill over the past six months. Also, we extend our sincere gratitude to the Pastors of Good Shepherd and the many friends who visited and continued to pray for his health and recovery.

Martalock, Betty L.
HILLSBORO - Betty L. Martalock, age 76 years of Hillsboro, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Hess Memorial Hospital in Mauston. She was born on Jan. 7, 1932 to Cyril "Red" and Helen (Brandon) Marvin in Hillsboro. She graduated from the Hillsboro High School in 1950. Betty was united in marriage to Norman Martalock on Aug. 7, 1954 in Hillsboro. They farmed at South Ridge, rural Kendall for 7 years, lived at Spring Green for 10 years and moved to Hillsboro in 1971. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2004. Betty worked for MECCA Sportswear in Hillsboro, Ontario, Kendall, and Tomah as a seamstress in the Banner Department. She was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Survivors include four daughters, Rebecca (David) Krueger of Pittsburgh, Pa., Barbara (Ralph) Buehler of Harrisburg, Pa., Susan Martalock of Middleton and Rachel Martalock of Middleton; four grandchildren, Carrie, Sarah, Stuart and Jessica; a brother-in-law, Alfred Wilson of Iowa and his children, Cindy, Tim, Tony, and Mike; and sister-in-law, Joyce Graewin of Norwalk and her sons, Ronald and Allen. In addition to her husband, Norman, she was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Grace (Heding) Marvin; and sister, Mary Lou Wilson. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the ST. PAUL'S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH in Hillsboro, with the Rev. Conrad Prell officiating. Niswonger, Gene A.
MADISON - Gene A. Niswonger, age 69, died unexpectedly on Wednesday Aug. 13, 2008 in Kansas City, Missouri. Gene was born Aug. 11, 1939 in Buchanon County, Iowa, the son of Harold and Isabelle (Atwood) Niswonger. He married
Sandra Anderson on Aug. 3, 1958 in Rowley, Iowa. Gene was a police officer in his home town of Independence, Iowa before he was hired by the Collins Radio Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a computer programer. He relocated his family out east where he worked as a systems analyst for SDC and ISSI. Gene later became involved in graphics and 3M Corporation and owned a company Auto Trim Design with his three sons; Kris, Mark and Eric After relocating back to the Midwest in 1981, Gene bought two graphic companies, one located in Iowa and the second in Madison where they settled for the past 25 years. Gene shared a love for aviation with his sons Kris and Eric. Gene and Eric established a company, Air Graphics of Middleton, where Gene worked as co-owner and marketing manager until his death. Gene loved public relations, marketing, customer relations and personally became a friend to all. He will be sadly missed by his family and his many business friends. Gene is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sandra Niswonger of Madison; his children, Kris (Susan) Niswonger of San Antonio, Texas, Mark (Tammy) Niswonger of Belleville, Kerry (Phil) Heinecke of Mosinee, Robyn (Kenny) Shingler of Shawano, and Eric (Debbie) Niswonger of Verona; his 12 grandchildren, Aaron, Heather, Jesse, Alexandra, Alex, Stephanie, Alex, Hannah, Anna Mae, Paul, Ethan and Sophia; his two great-grandchildren, Wisdom and Javanni; and his sister, Mary Kangas of Waterloo, Iowa. Gene is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Isabelle; and his brother, John Niswonger. Funeral Services will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave. Middleton, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday Aug. 20, 2008, with Jordan Jaeger presiding. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday Aug. 19, 2008, and also from noon until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Palzkill, Michael
MINERAL POINT - Michael Palzkill, age 78 of Mineral Point, died on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville. He was born on June 25, 1930, the 10th child of Michael and Celia (Marr) Palzkill. He attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1955. Mike was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, working on highway post offices and railroad mail cars. He retired as a letter carrier from the Mineral Point Post Office in 1985. He then worked for 13 years at the Kwik Trip. On July 29, 1961, Mike married
Dorothy Anderson in Mineral Point. He loved gardening and sharing the produce with neighbors and friends. He spent many hours reminiscing about his jobs as a youth delivering milk and ice in Mineral Point. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 170, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a lifetime member of St. Mary's / St. Paul's Congregation and served on its church council. Mike is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his three children, Michael Palzkill, Patricia Johnson and David (Diane) Palzkill, all of Mineral Point; his grandchildren, Katelyn (Theron Oellerich) and Jacob Johnson, both of Mineral Point; his brother, Jerome (Janice) Palzkill of Walworth, two sisters-in-law, Elaine Bratton and Catherine Palzkill; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Lambert, Charles, Firman, Vincent and Ralph; and his sisters, Bernice McMurrough, Ruth Preston and Jean Tesch. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at ST. MARY'S / ST. PAUL'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mineral Point. Fr. James Hinnen will officiate. Burial will be held in St. Mary's cemetery with Military Graveside Rites accorded by the Mineral Point American Legion and V.F.W. Peterson, Richard A.
MADISON - Richard A. Peterson, age 76, lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, under the compassionate care of HospiceCare. Richard was the son of Harold Arthur Peterson and Bernice Ellen Peterson (nee Clark), who passed away three days after his birth. Richard was raised by his uncle and aunt, Kenneth and Thelma Evenson. He graduated from West High School in 1951. Richard attended the Kehl School of Dance and studied under Mr. Kehl and Billie Sidell. He was also trained by Robert Lunnon of the Allegro American Co. and in 1953, studied under Richard and Christine Ellis of Chicago. Richard had the opportunity to take extra parts with the Festival Ballet and the Royal Ballet of England. Richard also had the pleasure of being partnered with Diana Welch for five years and together they traveled the Midwest dancing original ballets, as well as performing traditional pieces like the Nut Cracker and Les Sylphides. While Richard was dancing, he was also working in the medical field. He began in the film library for the American Hospital Association. In 1969, he entered x-ray training at Madison General Hospital. After graduation, his first jobs were with the Michael Reese Hospital and Northwestern Memorial. Richard spent two years at Milwaukee Area Technical College learning dental lab skills. In 1983, Richard was hired at the University Hospital and retired there after 13 years of service in 1996. Once retired, he read, traveled the United States, and indulged his passion for model railroads. He was preceded in death by all four of his parents; his brother, Harold; and his dance partner, Diana Welch. Richard is survived by his cousin, Joanne La Vergne of Calgary, Canada, whom he always considered a sister; a half-sister, Karen Barry of Pueblo West, Colo.; nephew, Brian La Vergne; niece-in-law, Chris of Calgary, Canada; and cousins, Roy Peterson of Illinois and Alan Peterson of Florida. Richard is further survived by his dear friends, Janet and Steve Buckingham of Madison. It meant a great deal to Richard that Joanne, Brian and Chris came to visit during his battle with cancer. Without their love and the kind care of the Buckingham's, his last days would have been unbearable. He will always cherish those moments in which he felt the power of love. It was Richard's wish that we all remember;

Prinslow, Patricia Ann
CAMARILLO, CALIF. - Patricia Ann Prinslow, 67, of Camarillo, Calif. passed away on Aug. 13, 2008, with her family at her side. Patricia fought a courageous battle with colon cancer this past year. Pat was born Patricia Ann Harris to the late Edgar and Elouise Harris of Mineral Point, Wis. on Aug. 26, 1940. Following graduation she moved to Santa Barbara to follow her ambition of living the California dream. She is survived by a daughter, Valerie Harrison and husband Carl of Camarillo Calif.; a son, Gregory Prinslow and wife Laura of San Diego Calif.; along with five wonderful grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel, Joshua Harrison of Camarillo Calif., Jessica Prinslow of San Diego, Calif., and Melissa Prinslow of Newhall, Calif.; two brothers, William (Bill) and Joyce Harris of Barneveld Wis. and Walter (Bud) and Pat Harris of Dodgeville, Wis; three sisters, Rosa Lee Dunbar of Platteville, Wis., Barbara and Ralph Romero of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Debra and Jeff Bourgholtzer of Clearwater, Fla. Pat was employed as a retail clerk, bookkeeper in the grocery business for many years. She retired in 1995, and spent the past several traveling between Wisconsin and Camarillo. Pat enjoyed quilting, and spending numerous hours doing her favorite pastime, genealogy. She looked forward to going to the Chumash Casino with her daughter and sister Barbara. She was a great Christian woman, and enjoyed reading God's word and doing crossword puzzles. She will be greatly missed by her family but we know when will be waiting with open arms when we arrive in Heaven. A celebration of Patricia Prinslow's life was held on August 15, 2008, at the Ivy Lawn cemetery in Ventura, Calif.
Seely, Edward "Eddie" Lynn
MADISON - On Aug. 13, 2008, Edward "Eddie" Lynn Seely, age 51, of Madison, was at home when he passed from this world and went on to his next journey. Eddie was born on May 21, 1957, to Norman G. and Beverly (Carlson) Seely in Madison. He graduated from LaFollette High School in 1976. In 1993 he received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Edgewood College. He was a godfather to Anjelica Seely. Eddie was employed at Great Lakes Higher Education working in budget and finances. He was also employed at H and R Block through the tax season. He is survived by his father, Norman; sister, Lori; uncles, Gene (Pat) Carlson of Tomah and Rick (Judy) Carlson of Geronimo, Okla.; known as "Uncle Ed" to Dylan Seely of Necedah, Anjelica Seely of Prairie du Chien and Amber Ann Fortney of Columbus; very special friends, Barb King of Cazenovia and Ricky Shafer of Dousman; and several friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Beverly; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles. A Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. In accordance with Eddie's wishes his remains will be cremated and scattered at a private location at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Wisconsin Heart or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
