Irvin C. Simley
Black Earth - Irvin C. Simley, age 97, of Black Earth, WI entered into his heavenly home on Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Sac, WI.
He was born September 22, 1904 in the village of Black Earth to Iver and Anna (Anderson) Simley. He lived his entire life in the village of Black Earth. He was baptized and confirmed in the Black Earth Lutheran Church. He graduated from Black Earth High School in 1923 and was the last surviving member. On September 22, 1926, he was married
to Cora Bakken and they celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary.
Irvin was a lifelong Black Earth resident and was owner and operator of Simley's Food Market from 1925 to 1979. After closing the store Irvin had a wood working shop in the former store building and later in a new building. He built hundreds of pieces of beautiful furniture, clocks, and numerous items.
He served as president of the Black Earth Telephone Co. for 48 years -1946-1994. In earlier years, he worked on Highway KP and at the local drug store.
In his mid 20's, he worked at Patron's Mercantile Co. as cashier before going into business.
He served on Black Earth Village board for several years.
He was an active member of the church and community.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and boating.
He was co-founder of the Black Earth Community Club. He played amateur baseball for Black Earth for more than 10 years and basketball after high school. He had the first self serve store in the area.
He was a member of the Senior Bowling League at Hare's Town Bowl in Middleton from 1980-1993.
At age 65, Irvin took on serving the role of father and mentor in assisting his daughter with her 5 children after the passing of their father.
He was honored as Grand Marshall for the Black Earth Field Days Parade on August 11, 2002.
He was a member of the former Black Earth Lutheran Church (Our Saviour's Lutheran Church), where he served as a church board member.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Otis, Dr. Alfred, and Elvin Simley, A grandson: Frank DeWitt, and a son-in-law: Gordon DeWitt.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 24, 2002, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Black Earth with Rev. Ron Mach and Rev. John Shep officiating. Burial will be at Vermont Lutheran cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, August 23, 2002 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Black Earth, WI.
The Ellestad Black Earth Funeral Home is serving the family.
Irvin was a kind, hard-working, generous loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Benjamin B. Skuldt
Mt. Horeb - Benjamin B. Skuldt, age 24 of Mt. Horeb, WI died unexpectedly in a house fire on Thursday, September 26, 2002.
Ben was born July 9, 1978 in Madison, WI to Boyd & Nancy (McGowan) Skuldt. He graduated from Mt. Horeb High School in 1996. He then attended Herzing College. He worked at Thermo Nicolet for 6 years.
Ben was loved by many and he would go out of his way to help family and friends. He was a fun loving son, brother and friend.
He is survived by his parents: Boyd & Nancy,
His two sisters: Jolene (Peter) Horton of Mt. Horeb,
Janel Skuldt of Madison,
His niece: Peyton Horton and many relatives and friends.
Ben was preceded in death by his grandparents: Ben & Mabel Skuldt and Arthur & Jeanette McGowan.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, September 30, 2002 at the Mt. Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Gulbrand officiating. Burial will be at The Mt. Horeb Union cemetery. Friends may call from 2-6 PM on Sunday, September 29, 2002 at the ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. 8th. Street, Mt.
Horeb. Ben will be sadly missed by everyone.
Margaret A. Smith
Crawfordsville, Indiana/Mt. Horeb - Margaret A. Smith, age 91, of Mt. Horeb, WI, and formerly of Crawfordsville, Indiana, died on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at Ingleside Nursing Home in Mt. Horeb, WI.
The former Margaret A. Andrews was born October 15, 1910 in Marion, Indiana to Albert and Grace Andrews.
She taught music and art at the elementary school level.
She married
the late Maurice A. Smith on June 15, 1940. Maurice died in 1991.
She was a member of Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
Survivors include, her son: Michael (Terry Barton) Smith of Black Earth

And several nieces, nephews and friends.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 19, 2002 at Oak Hill cemetery in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The Ellestad Funeral Home, 500 N. 8th St., Mt. Horeb, WI, is serving the family.
A memorial fund will be established at Nature Conservancy-Indiana Chapter, 1505 N. Delaware St., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46202.
Stephanie Rose Sutter
Mt. Horeb - Stephanie Rose Sutter, age 11 died unexpectedly on Friday, September 13,
2002 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan of post
surgical complications.
She was born April 23, 1991 in Madison, WI to Tod & Jane (Herger) Sutter.
She was entering fifth grade at the Mt. Horeb Intermediate School.
She was a happy, loving child that accepted courageously the challenges of
her health. She had a hug for everyone that she came in contact with.
She was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Mt. Horeb, WI

Wilma E. Swiggum
Mt. Horeb - Wilma E. Swiggum, age 90, of Mt. Horeb, WI, died on Thursday, July 25, 2002 at Ingleside Nursing Home in Mt. Horeb. She was born September 01, 1911, to Alfred and Lena (Bieri) Mueller. She married
Casper Swiggum on June 30, 1931. He died December 26, 1972. She was a 50 year member of Wisconsin Extension Homemakers. She worked at Graber for 2 years, Ryser Cheese for 7 years, and was a cook at the Mt. Horeb School District for 13 years. She also volunteered at Ingleside Nursing Home and Mt. Horeb Visitor Center Booth. She was a member of Mt. Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church and it's WELCA, the Swiss Club, Sons of Norway and the Kitchen Band.
She is survived by:
