Walters, Edward Gerald "Ed"
MADISON - Edward Gerald "Ed" Walters passed away on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Belmont Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 66. Ed was born on Jan. 12, 1942, in Wisconsin Rapids, to Edward C and Doris (Becker) Walters. He was one of three children surviving to adulthood. He graduated from Assumption High School in 1960 and then graduated from UW-Steven's Point in 1966. Ed had always known he was an artist; his dilemma was choosing music over visual art. He decided in college to become a professional musician and draw and paint in his spare time. He then received a master's degree in piano performance at UW-Madison in 1969. He played in several jazz bands and may yet be remembered for his rendition of "Over the Rainbow" at the Ovens of Brittany at Shorewood. In 1977, he joined the music faculty at Edgewood College and continued to teach private piano lessons. Many of his students remain close personal friends today. He traveled as the primary accompanist for the Lakeview Chorale on its European choir trips in 1983, 1986, and 1989. The choir also traveled to Mexico in 1988. After the choir disbanded, Ed made three additional trips as a duo with Hiromi Kuwata, Jonathan Oberby, and Debra Kaltowski. He developed a love for photography during these years and enjoyed making presentations to his friends afterwards. He and his close friend, Don Bower shared 42 years together. They enjoyed attending concerts, attending and giving parties, hosting visitors from other countries in their home, and collecting and selling antiques. After his 2001 retirement from Edgewood, Ed began painting as if to make up for lost time. His body of work produced an art show in 2004 for the annual Alzheimer's conference. He presented another show in downtown Madison about a year later. Ed was a member of the Sonneck Society for American Music, the College Music Society, Music Teacher's National Association, and the American Association of University Professors. He is survived by his mother, Doris Walters of Wisconsin Rapids; sisters, Joanne Fischer of Wisconsin Rapids, and Barbara (Bruce) of Mukwonago; his close friend, Don S. Bower; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to the many friends who have been so helpful during this difficult time. Also thanks to the University Hospital doctors, nurses, and ACE Society; the Alzheimer's Association; and the North East Senior Coalition. A celebration of Ed's life will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave, Madison, at 11 a.m. Pastor Jerry Amstutz will officiate the service. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.
