Thompson, Charles J.

VERONA - Charles J. Thompson, age 87, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at the University Hospital TLC Unit from an apparent heart attack while working in the yard of his dream home. Charlie and his faithful friend and wife, Ruth, were former residents of Danbury, Connecticut, for 80 years. Charlie enjoyed life to the fullest with Ruth (his Honey) being the focus of his life. On September 7, 2000, they celebrated 65 years of marriage at a family gathering. In his prayers he always expressed his joy in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. But Honey, as he always addressed Ruth, was his reason to live. He expressed his love openly by holding hands, a kiss, vocally, and by helping Honey at home in any way he could. He had a love of washing dishes after every meal. He loved to do the laundry and iron the sheets. His yard was impeccable and he enjoyed mowing and raking, tinkering in the garage, painting or working with moldings to adorn their home. Charlie was a faithful worker as well, being employed by Bard-Parker of Danbury, Connecticut, for 37 years. He was able to retire at the age of 55 as office and payroll supervisor. For 32 years, Charlie and Honey have shared a healthy wonderful life together. They traveled in a Ford Travelwagon to every state in the country, including Alaska. He boasted of his mileage and durability of that little six-cylinder Ford van. With that van and it's pop-up top they visited family all over the country, from Maine to California, just the two of them sharing a happy life! Charlie was a man of integrity to his wife and God, Jehovah. He worked hard at his employment and took pride in paying all debts as soon as he opened the mail. They managed to live like a king and queen on his pension and Social Security for the past 32 years, Honey always working with him to keep costs down so they could save some money to visit the kids, and reluctant to accept charity from the kids when he had all under control with his dynamic budget. He was an inspiration to all he came in contact with, as his style was so rare, and he will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. Charlie is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Thompson; three children, Elizabeth (Ronald) Drumm of Bingham, Maine, Lynn Malin of Winchester, Virginia, and C. Jay (Debby) Thompson of Verona, Wisconsin; as well as nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harry A. Thompson Jr. of Chatsworth, California. His sister, Elizabeth Ray, passed away in May 2000. A memorial service will be held at ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, on Saturday, December 2, 2000, at 3:00 p.m. Friends are welcome to visit from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. and remain for the memorial talk at 3:00 p.m. The family would like to express their gratitude to all who assisted in Charlie's immediate care, the Verona Public Works Department; Ms. Weiland, who administered CPR on Charlie; neighbors; Verona Police Department; EMS; and the TLC Unit at University Hospital. A special thank you to Mr. Harley Simpson, overseer of the Mount Horeb Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, for his hours of support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Verona Fire Department and Hospice, if you wish. ELLESTAD FUNERAL HOME is serving the family.
