King, Winston L.

MADISON - Winston L. King, age 92, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 15, 2000, from swift-developing prostate cancer. He was born on August 30, 1907 in Avilla, Indiana to Alfred King and Alberta (Bodenhafer) King, lived on the family farm until his college years, and attended the local common school and high school. He graduated from Asbury College (Wilmore, Kentucky) in 1929 and taught for a year in El Paso, Texas before assuming the ministerial responsibilities of a combined Methodist-Congregational parish in Newport, Vermont. In June 1931, he married Jocelyn Brownlee, whom he had met in college. Ordained as a Methodist in 1935, he became a minister of the Congregational Church in 1937 subsequently serving parishes of that church (later to become the United Church of Christ) in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, until 1949. The years in New England parishes were interrupted by time spent in World War II military service (1943-1945) when Winston was a chaplain in the army, stationed in Europe. During his early years as a minister, Winston continued his post-graduate studies, earning a B.D. from Andover Newton Theological School in 1936, an S.T.M. from Harvard Divinity School in 1938, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1940, taking his degree in the history and philosophy of religion. In 1949, there was a career change when the Kings, with their three children, moved to Grinnell, Iowa where Winston had been appointed Dean of the Chapel at Grinnell College, a position he held until 1964. He was concurrently Associate Professor and then Professor of Philosophy and Religion. From 1964-1973, he was a professor at Vanderbilt University, teaching in the field of the history of religions, and from 1973-1976 and was a professor of philosophy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. These academic years were punctuated by many months spent in Asia. The Kings spent nearly two years (during 1958-1960) in Burma where Winston was visiting professor and advisor to the Ford Foundation at the International Institute for Advanced Buddhistic Studies; during 1960 he served for a time as visiting professor at Admadngar College in India; in 1965-1966 he was Fulbright Lecturer, Faculty of Letters, at Kyoto University in Japan; with a partial grant from the American Philosophical Society, the academic year of 1970-1971 was spent in Kyoto, Japan as was the summer of 1973. The Kings spent a number of semesters at Oberlin College, at Carleton, Ohio and in Japan until their move to Madison in 1979 where they lived with their daughter and son-in-law. Winston King is the author of nine books and many articles, most of them in the area of Buddhism, Buddhistic studies, Buddhist meditation, and the relationship between Buddhism and Christianity. His last book, Zen and the Way of the Sword, was published when he was 86. Winston was a member of a number of professional organizations, among them the American Academy of Religion, the American Society for the Study of Religion, and the Association for Asian Studies. He was also a member of the Madison Society of Friends. He was preceded in death by Jocelyn, his dear companion for 65 years. He is survived by his brother, Harry (Margaret) King of Columbus, Ohio; his brother, Lauren of Zanesville, Ohio; his daughter, Carroll (Robert) Heideman of Madison; his son, Christopher (Leela) King of Oregon House, California; his son, Jonathan (Barbra) King of Monmouth, Oregon; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Even into his last days, Winston continued to be physically active and intellectually involved. He enjoyed meeting new people and making new acquaintances. Over the years, he also maintained rich friendships, a good number of them through frequent correspondence, and through telephone calls. A salient characteristic of his personality was his deep interest in and abiding curiosity about the world and everything within it, a quality that sustained and nurtured his vitality all his life, and gave pleasure to those who lived with him or knew him. Memorials may be made to HospiceCare. A memorial visitation will be held at the CRESS FUNERAL HOME on Friday, February 18, 2000 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A private family service of memory will be held at a later time.
