Francis Kenneth Damon
Francis K. "Tubby" Damon, age 85, of Rhinelander, died Sunday, April 17, 2005.
He was born on April 29, 1919 in Sherry, Wisconsin to Chester and Ada (Morgan) Damon.
He graduated from Waupaca High School in 1938. In 1941, Tubby joined the U.S. Army and served for 4-1/2 years.
He served during WWII as a Staff Sergeant with Troop C 87th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized.
He was stationed in North France, Ardennes, and Central Europe receiving a Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal, and two overseas service bars.
He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He married
the former Dona Smith on September 29, 1951 in Rhinelander.
After WWII, he was the chef at Kings Gateway in Land o` Lakes and came to Rhinelander in 1949 to reopen the Court Club, later known as the Pied Piper. He retired in 1988.
He started the Northwoods Chapter of the Restaurant Association serving two terms as its president.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He volunteered for the V.F.W.`s Thanksgiving dinners when they were held at the V.F.W. hall.
He also volunteered with the D.A.V.`s forget-me-not sales.
He was an avid golfer and a member of the Rhinelander Country Club, a ski jumper, hockey player, and pilot.
He enjoyed snowmobiling, ice fishing, and woodworking.
Tubby wrote a Damon family genealogy book and had traced his family roots back to direct descendants of the Mayflower.
Tubby is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dona; his two daughters, Michelle (David) Hines of Omro and Pamela (Steve) Winchell of Rhinelander; his son, Scott of Rhinelander; his grandchildren, Jody Olson and Carey Durkin of Rhinelander, Kelly Durkin of Menomonie, John and Ryan Hines of Omro, Annie Hines of Eau Claire; and four great-grandchildren all of Rhinelander.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, and three brothers.
A memorial service will be held at Hildebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home on Thursday, April 21, 2005 at 12:00 Noon with Chaplain Dan Rogers of the D.A.V. officiating.
Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 until Noon.
A memorial fund has been established in Tubby`s name. Hildebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home, 715-365-4343, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gertrude C. Nelson
Nelson, Gertrude "Dode" C., age 82, a long-time Rhinelander resident, died Thursday, March 31, 2005 at Dr. Kate Nursing Home in Woodruff.
She was born September 15, 1922, in Superior, WI., the daughter of Herman and Esther (Anderson) Olson.
Dode attended grade school and graduated from Superior High School.
She married
Thomas W. Nelson in 1938 in Superior, and they moved to Rhinelander in 1955.
She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and was an avid bowler.
She is survived by two sons; Thomas R. (Mary Ann) Nelson, Rhinelander, and Patrick (Donna) Nelson, LaCrosse, WI., four daughters; Bonnie (Ken) Mikkelson, Minocqua, Ginger (Dick) Taylor, Rhinelander, Kathy (Jack) Audas, Stone Mountain, GA., and Lori (Dave) Hartford, of Ironwood, MI., two brothers; Herman (Aloise) Olson, Jr., Robert (Bonnie) Olson, and a sister, Audrey Romans, all of Superior, as well as 22 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Nelson on July 1, 1976, and a granddaughter, Pam, and a great-granddaughter, Erica.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 4, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mark Lutheran Church with Reverend Jeff Shearier officiating.
Interment will follow in Forest Home cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 until 6 P.M. on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at the Hildebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home, 365-4343, as well as one hour prior to services at the church on Monday morning.

Jeffrey Joseph Piasecki
Piasecki, Jeffrey J., age 29, of Rhinelander died Friday, December 24, 2004 at his home following a long, courageous struggle with cancer.
Jeff lived in Rhinelander his entire life and attended area school.
He enjoyed hunting, pool, fishing, bowling, horseshoes, snowmobiling, and spending time with family, friends, and his loving companion, Susie. He will be sadly missed by everyone.
Jeff is survived by his parents; Daniel Piasecki (Nancy Pugh), Rhinelander, and Georgia Davis (Charlie Voight), Mercer, brothers; Gregory Piasecki (Valerie Ninemann), Antigo, and Thomas (Julie) Piasecki, Minneapolis, MN, adopted sister, Tricia Pugh and Jasmine, and his loving best friend and companion, Sue Meyers and Rambo.
He is further survived by uncles; Michael (Lou Ann) Piasecki, Wausau, James (Cathy) Davis, Rhinelander, and Robert (Nadine) Davis, Hubertus, WI; aunts; JoAnn Piasecki, Rhinelander, Theresa (Bill) Hunter, Elk Fork, KY., and Sheila (Larry) Tody, Ashland, as well as numerous great aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 7:00 P.M. at the Hildebrand-Darton-Russ Funeral Home, 365-4343, with Father John Gerritts officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 P.M. until the time of services at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Mary Lou Alsteens
Mary Lou Alsteens, age 58, of Rhinelander died on Thursday, June 9, 2005 at St. Mary`s Hospital with her family by her side.
She was born on April 8, 1947 in Solon Springs, Wisconsin to Gus and Mercelia (Doriott) Studeman.
On December 12, 1965, she married
Norman Alsteens, Sr.
She was a parishioner at St. Joseph`s Catholic Church.
She worked part-time at Frito-Lay and cleaned at Holiday Acres.
In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her garden, crafting, making doilies, baking, cooking, and shopping particularly garage sales.
Over the years, she collected ducks and geese.
She also enjoyed reading and collecting romance novels.
Most of all, Mary Lou loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of over 40 years; her sons, Norman, Jr. (Kim) Alsteens and Eric (Samantha) of Rhinelander; her step-children, Renee of Knoxville, Tennesee, Sylvia of Litchfield, Minnesota, Nicky Alsteens of Minneapolis and their families; her grandchildren, Paula, Ashley, Brett, Matthew, Corey, Brooke, and Tatum; her mother and her sisters, Marilyn (Toodie) Doriott and Jerri Cairns of Webster, Wisconsin; her brothers, Vernon Haaf of Siren, Wisconsin and Marvin Studeman of Webster; her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Linda and Clyde Keso, Bob and Sylvia Piasecki, Donna and Lloyd Alsteens, and Margaret Alsteens all of Rhinelander, and Ray and Barbara Alsteens of Eagle River; her nieces and nephews, Carmie and Terry Winquist, Butch and Kathy Alsteens, and Kenny and Dewey Alsteens all of Rhinelander, and Connie and Larry Alsteens of Crandon; as well as many other nieces and nephews; and her best friends, Gail Starkey-Tveiten of Brimson, Minnesota, Jerry Kainz-Thoren of Ely, Minnesota, and Debbie Kegley of Crandon.
She was preceded in death by her father and sister, Betty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 at St. Joseph`s Catholic Church at 2:00 P.M. with Father John Gerritts officiating.
Visitation will be prior to Mass from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the church.
Burial will follow in Forest Home cemetery.

Kenneth George Flory, Jr.
Flory, Jr., Kenneth G., age 70 of Rhinelander, died Monday, August 22, 2005 at Alice Haus.
He was born July 7, 1935 in Marinette, WI., the son of Kenneth G. and Ruth (Pavala) Flory, Sr.
Ken was a graduate of Rhinelander High School, and he married
the former Shelby Reader on August 18, 1956 in Rhinelander.
He was the grocery manager for Reeves Food Lane for 21 years. He continued his employment with Rhinelander Paper Company, retiring in 1997. During his retirement years, he enjoyed trips to Florida and Arizona. Ken was an active golfer, and he also got much delight from watching his children and grandchildren in all their extra-curricular activities. He was well known for his sideline refereeing.
He is survived by his wife, Shelby, Rhinelander, two daughters; Kim (Lee) Bastian, Rhinelander, and Carmel (Mike) Schramm, Rhinelander, two sons; James (Tammy) Flory, Rhinelander, and Michael (Wendy) Flory of Wisconsin Rapids, a sister, Donna (Bruce) Peterson, Greenfield, WI., grandchildren; Angela (Doug) Serberg, Jesse Lehman, and Ryan, Drew, Lauren, Taylor, Philip, and Grant Flory, as well as great-granddaughter, Emma Serberg. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 7:00 P.M. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 135 Larch St., with Pastor Joe Ripley officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 P.M. until the time of services at the church.
Private interment will be in Northland Memorial Park cemetery on Thursday.
