Arthur B. Curren
WAUKESHA - Arthur B. Curren, 65, of Waukesha, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital following a courageous battle with leukemia.
Arthur was born Nov. 15, 1934, in Montclair, N.J., a son of the late Arthur E. and Clara (nee Washer) Curren. He attended grade and high school in New Jersey, graduating from Bloomfield High School in 1952. He then went to Pratt Institute where he received his B.A. in art design. After college he went to work for the prestigious J. Walter Thompson Advertising Company in New York, where he helped design and create ads for national distribution. On June 22, 1963, he married
Carol Ann Gundrum in Freeport, N.Y. He left J. Walter Thompson Company and became a freelance writer and author. He served in the U.S. Army
from 1957 to 1963. In 1978 he and his family moved to Waukesha where he has been employed at Kalmbach Publishing Company.
Arthur’s passion in life, besides his family, was model railroading. He wrote numerous articles and authored many books on structure, building and layouts. He is a member of the National Model Railroad Association and frequently spoke at their national conventions. His award-winning Frenda Mine was a structure that he took pride in and won him national acclaim. He also was a member of the Waukesha Couples Bowling League at Red Carpet Lanes in Waukesha.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Curren of Waukesha; his son, Christopher Arthur Curren of Milwaukee; a sister, Sheila (Greg) Hunter of Livingston, N.J.; along with other relatives and friends.
A memorial service for Arthur will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Wisconsin Memorial Chapel of the Flowers in Brookfield, 13235 W. Capital Drive. Father Doug Sparks of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Waukesha will be the officiant. Entombment will be in Wisconsin Memorial Park. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the service at 3:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Flowers.

Helen J. Newlin-Wagner
WAUKESHA - Helen J. Newlin-Wagner, 67, of Waukesha, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Ruth Hospice in Milwaukee. She was born in Canada on Oct. 10, 1932, the daughter of Anthony and Anastasia (nee Zubatiuk) Myslowka.
Helen is survived by her son, Gregory (Susan) Newlin-Wagner of Garden City, N.Y., and by her daughter, Diane (Boyd Roessler) Newlin-Wagner of Waukesha. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kaitlin and Hayley Newlin-Wagner and Megan Roessler. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
Private family services have been held.

Norman O. ‘Pete’ Gastrau
SODUS, N.Y. - Norman O. "Pete" Gastrau, 69, formerly of Lannon, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at Via Health of Wayne-Myers Campus in Sodus, N.Y. Mr. Gastrau was the manager of the East Williamson, N.Y., plant of Seneca Foods for 12 years, plant manager of Richardson Foods in Macedon, N.Y., for five years, and more recently he was employed by Alard Equipment Corporation in Williamson, N.Y.
He is survived by his wife, Diana; his four children, Jeffrey of Annapolis, Md., David of Milwaukee, Steven (Karen) of Wauwatosa and Pamela (Peter) Jaskulski of Franklin; five grandchildren, Steven, Brent, Katie, Kayla and Alex; and his brother, Donald (Diane) of Cavour. Mr. Gastrau was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Ida (Skebba) Gastrau, and his sister, Pauline.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Sunnyside cemetery in Lannon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mr. Gastrau’s memory to Via Health of Wayne-Myers Campus, Middle Road, Sodus, N.Y. 14555.

Phyllis R. Tulogeski
WAUKESHA - Longtime Waukesha resident, Phyllis R. Tulogeski, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 72. She was born in Delafield on Oct. 1, 1928, the daughter of Walter and Adele (nee Vielbaum) Lamp.
Phyllis is the dear mother of Ginger Marty of Brown Deer, Vicki (John) Rodden of Slidell, La., Steve Tulogeski of Waukesha, Craig (Sharyl) Tulogeski of Genesee, Lisa (Gary) Holsclaw of Waukesha and Sheri Gille of Waterford. She is the grandmother of Jake and Karen Tulogeski; the sister of Arlene (Harold) Mansfield of Florida; and is further survived by other relatives and friends. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, in July of this year.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at the Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home on Moreland Boulevard; Pastor Russell Hurst will officiate. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the funeral home. Interment will be at Prairie Home cemetery.

Mildred A. "Millie" Schmitz
WAUKESHA - Mildred A. "Millie" Schmitz, lifelong resident of Waukesha, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital. She was 73.
She was born May 13, 1927, in Waukesha, the daughter of Myron and Gladys (nee Brown) Horton.
Millie was a charter member of St. William Catholic Church in Waukesha and a member of the church’s Christian Mother Society. She was a legal secretary for the Waukesha County Corporation Counsel for many years. She was also a very active volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Waukesha.
Millie is the beloved wife of Robert W. Schmitz, whom she married
on June 10, 1950, in Waukesha. She is the dear mother of Steven (Joyce) Schmitz of Waukesha, Patti Von Gunten of Waukesha and Mary Kay Knoll of Lake Mills. She is the loving grandmother of Jenny, Stephie, Ray III, Jason, Justin and Andy. She is the sister of Wesley Horton of King, Donald (Arlene) Horton of West Allis and John (Pat) Horton of Pewaukee. She is also survived by other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at St. William Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd. The Rev. Leonard Barbian will celebrate the Mass. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13 at the Cesarz, Charapata and Zinnecker Funeral Home, 237 N. Moreland Blvd. and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. June F. Datka
WAUKESHA - June F. Datka, 65, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at LindenGrove Health Care Center in Waukesha. She was born in Milwaukee to Thomas A. J. and Florence (nee Johnson) Brown. For many years she worked at Northview Home and also was a private duty nurse. During her stay at LindenGrove she touched the lives of many of the residents and staff.
She will be sadly missed by her two sons and two daughters, Chris G. (Katherine) Datka of Sussex, Cindy L. Sommers, Corey W. Datka and Laurie A. (John) Wollenzien, all of Waukesha. She was the beloved grandmother of Paul Datka of New York, Gary Datka of Stevens Point, Jessi Sommers of Whitewater and J.T. and Hunter Wollenzien, both of Waukesha; and dear sister of Alice (Ted) Busalacchi of Muskego, Thomas (Sandy) Brown of Winter and Georgia (Robert) Katzer of Oconomowoc.

Alice T. Kennedy
WAUKESHA - Alice T. Kennedy, 86, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at the Waters of Westmoreland. She was born in Menomonie on Dec. 7, 1913, to the late Nickolas and Alice Traxler. Mrs. Kennedy came to Waukesha in 1936 to join her sister, Sadie Reed, and shortly after she met her husband Daniel Kennedy. They were united in marriage May 6, 1939, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mr.s Kennedy was employed at Goff’s Restaurant from 1943 to 1961. In 1961, she accepted a job at Biwer’s Shoe Store and continued to work there until 1976. During the 1980s, her husband Dan served as a crossing guard at the corners of College and West avenues, which was in front of their family home. On many occasions Dan had the kids knock on the door and Alice always had a treat for them. Mrs. Kennedy enjoyed crocheting and handiwork and she will be remembered as a hard-working and kind-hearted woman.
Survivors include her son, Michael Kennedy and two grandchildren, Ramona Kennedy and Alex Kennedy. She is further survived by her brother-in-law Donald (Myrtle) Kennedy and families and sister-in-law Helen Melka and families, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Kennedy on Nov 20, 1990, and also by eight brothers and sisters.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon Friday, Oct. 13, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, at the corner of Hartwell and Newhall avenues. A funeral Mass will be at noon. The Rev. Helen A. Makela
PEWAUKEE - Helen A. Makela, of Pewaukee, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee at age 82. She was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Superior, the daughter of Gustav and Hannah (nee Bentsen) Lindquist.
Helen is the beloved wife of George W. Makela, whom she married
on Sept. 28, 1940, in Milwaukee. She is the loving mother of Joan (James) Gleason of the town of Waukesha and Bruce (Mary) Makela of Wales. She is the sister of Hannah Rawn of Superior. She is the loving grandmother of James Gleason, Joni Hahn and Lory Kraft, and is the proud great-grandmother of Dustin and Ashley Hahn. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Helen June Lindquist, other relatives and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence Lindquist and Elmer Lindquist, and her sisters, Lilly Lindquist and Agnes M. Lindquist.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home-West, 237 N. Moreland Blvd. Pastor Rob Resheske will officiate. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Prairie Home cemetery.

Louis Kovacic
ASHIPPUN - Louis Kovacic, 80, of Ashippun, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital. He was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 25, 1920, the son of Louis Kovacic and Theresa Horvat.
Louis served his country in the United States Army
. On April 18, 1988, he married
Shirley Schroeder in Nevada. He was a mason contractor in the southeastern Wisconsin area and was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Toland (Rubicon).
Louis is lovingly survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Connie Christensen of South Milwaukee, Gary Kovacic of New Berlin and Jean (Steve) Venus of West Allis; his stepchildren, Ray (Sandy) Morris of Ashippun, Tom (Tina) Morris of Muskego and Judy (Al) Sattler of Florida; his grandchildren, Kim (Don) Sorensen of New Berlin, Wende (Steve) Glaser of South Milwaukee, Anthony (Tami) Couillard of Longview, Texas, Stephanie and Louis J. Kovacic of New Berlin and Andrea and Jennifer Venus of West Allis; and his great-grandchildren, Ashley and Scott Sorensen, Julia Glaser and Austin and Kailyn Couillard. He is further survived by his sister, Mary Chodara of Greenfield, three stepgrandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Louis will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Toland; the Rev. Larry Westfield will officiate. Interment will be at St. Olaf cemetery.

Judith E. ‘Judi’ Dobratz
WAUKESHA - Judith E. "Judi" Dobratz (nee Leistikow) of Waukesha, formerly of Mukwonago, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Oct. 4, 2000, at the age of 56.
She was the loving wife of Bob; beloved mother of Robb (Beth) and Trixie; cherished daughter of Elmer and the late Polly Leistikow; and the dear sister of Jerry (Jean) and Jim (Jackie) Leistikow. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Judi was a past employee of M&I Bank, Kettle Moraine Hospital and Maple Avenue Clinic. She was a member of Christian Mother’s Association, PTA, cub scouting and snowmobile clubs.

Joel F. Ruege, 46
BROOKFIELD - Joel F. Ruege, 46, of Brookfield, died Oct. 5, 2000. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul T. Ruege. He was the dear son of Mary, brother of David (Cindy) and Dan (Anna). He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Joel was employed by Protect the Planet. Private family services will be held. Esther Elizabeth Hanson, 91
MILWAUKEE - Esther Elizabeth Hanson, a resident of St. John’s Tower in Milwaukee for many years, died Oct. 2, 2000, at Columbia Hospital at the age of 91.
She was the aunt of Dorothy Mathias and Lucy (Alvin) Kubly, both of Monroe, Gladys Burgess of Elkhorn and Gordon Gaul of Palo Alto, Calif.
Miss Hanson was born June 4, 1909, in Delafield to Andrew and Bertha (nee Brehmer) Hanson, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Hanson, and her sisters, Martha Reese, Ruth Hanson and Clara Gaul.
Esther was a retiree of A. O. Smith.
Memorial services for Esther will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at St. John Chrysostom Episcopal Church, 111 Genesee St., Delafield. The Rev. D. Robert Seay will be officiating. Burial will take place at Delafield City cemetery.

Claire Ann Diekfuss
ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Claire Ann Diekfuss, formerly of Waukesha, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at the Heartland of Zephyrhills at the age of 71. She was a member of New River Church in Westley Chapel.
She is survived by her daughters, Marlene Kraszka of Zephyrhills, Paulene Holley of Lake City, Fla., Colleen Johnson and Charlene Buccione, both of Zephyrhills; and her son, Marlin Diekfuss of Zephyrhills. She is further survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Alice A. Hastings
MUKWONAGO - Alice A. Hastings of Mukwonago passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at LindenGrove in Mukwonago at the age of 86. Alice was born in Milwaukee on April 13, 1914, to Charles and Anna (nee Roloff) Schroeder.
She was a former longtime employee of Trim & Tidy Dry Cleaners in East Troy and a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mukwonago.
Survivors include her brother, Edward (Betty) Schroeder of East Troy; a son-in-law, Jerry (Sandy) Jay of Eagle; a brother-in-law, Walter Hanson of Florida; five grandchildren, Sandy (Robert) Westerdahl, Rick Jay, Vicki Rebholz, Randy Jay and Jeff (Jean) Jay; seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; her daughter, Donna Jay; and six brothers and sisters.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of a funeral service at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 509 Grand Ave., Mukwonago. The Rev. Kieth Kuschel will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge cemetery in East Troy.
