Kern, Raymond Saturday, 13 Mar 2004
Raymond L. Kern, 79, a resident of the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil, died March 13, 2004.
He was born on April 6, 1924, in Eureka, Calif., to George and Myrla (Lancaster) Kern.
He married
Doris (McDonald) Kern on Feb. 8, 1945, in Nevada. She preceded him in death in 1998.
He served as a Third Class Gunners Mate in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. He won the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Award.
He worked in a plywood plant in Arcata, Calif.
He loved to make and give away beaded alligator key chains, he enjoyed participating in activities with other residents at the veterans home.
He is survived by his son Fred Kern and wife Norma of Eagle Point, Ore; daughter Willa Kaupp of Olalla; brother Don Kern of Ione, Calif.; sisters Gracie Sprague of Arcata, Calif., and Mary Lou Weber, also of Arcata; several nieces and nephews; and grandchildren Jodie, Nickie, Donald and Tammy and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on March 20, 2004 at 1 p.m. at Christian Life Center in Port Orchard.

Newland, Ellie Saturday, 13 Mar 2004
Ellie C. “Babe” Newland, 92, a Port Orchard resident, died March 13, 2004, at Ridgemont Terrace.
She was born in Stanton, Neb on June 19, 1911, to Peter and Anna (Neilsen) Beck.
She married
Gerald K. Newland on Jan. 6, 1933, in Huron, S.D. He preceded her in death in 1978.
She graduated from Huron High School in Huron S.D. She was a cook at Pilgrim Firs Church Camp for more than 13 years.
She belonged to the Waterman Circle Group at Elim Lutheran Church, attended the Kitsap County Homemakers Association, was an avid reader especially of autobiographies, enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk, belonged to the Givens Senior Citizens group and participated in their outings and loved to travel with her husband before his passing.
She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her son Gerald L. and wife Ann Newland of Port Orchard; numerous nieces and nephews; grandchildren Kim L. and husband Rick Carr of Battle Creek, Mich. and Lance M. and wife Barbara Newland of Port Orchard and great-grandchildren Natalia Carr, Jennifer Smith, Amy Achilles and Katheryn Achilles.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, at Elim Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at Sunset Lane Memorial Park.

Toohey, John Saturday, 13 Mar 2004
John Fleming Toohey, 53, a Bremerton resident, died March 13, 2004, at the University of Washington Medical Center.
He was born in Dayton, Ohio to John J. and Edith Toohey.
He graduated from Buena High School in 1969 in Ventura, Calif. He served in the Air Force and was in the nursing field for many years.
He entered the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard apprenticeship program in 1992 and was medically retired from Pipefitter Shop 56 in 1999.
He is survived by his wife Kathy Hatchett-Toohey; daughters Jillian Toohey of Redmond and Jessamy Toohey of Bellingham; sons Elijah Toohey of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Joshua Toohey of Grapeview; mother Edith Off; sisters Elizabeth Enoch and Marion McClain, and brother Brian Toohey, all of Ventura, Calif.
At his request, there will be no funeral. His ashes will be scattered in Puget Sound at a private family gathering at a later date.
Cronce, Darlene Friday, 12 Mar 2004
Darlene I. Cronce, 82, a Port Orchard resident, died March 12, 2004, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Jan. 1, 1922, in Huron, S.D., to Arthur and Olga (Anderson) Schuman.
She married
Harold E. Cronce on June 16, 1951, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 2002.
She graduated from high school in Huron, S.D.
She worked in the aircraft industry during World War II, in a sheet metal shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and as a dietician at the Naval hospital in Bremerton.
She enjoyed writing, reading the Bible, and teaching Sunday school.
She is survived by her sons Jack Cronce and wife Linda of Port Orchard, Gary Cronce of Grapeview and Robin Cronce and wife Jeanne of Port Orchard; daughter Laurie Boyer of Port Orchard; sister Maxine Bickel and husband Wes of Sumner; and eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Kathleen Joy Cronce, sister Eunice Waliser and brother Gene Schuman.
A graveside service and interment was held on March 15 at Sunset Lane Memorial Park.

Lilley, Conny Friday, 12 Mar 2004
Conny Jean Lilley, 56, a resident of Coos Bay, Ore., died March 12, 2004.
She was born on Sept. 5, 1947, in Bremerton to Donald and Gloria (Morris) Miles.
She married
William Lilley in Coos Bay, Ore., on April 6, 1984.
She graduated from South Kitsap High School and attended Southwestern Oregon Community College.
She worked for School District 9, where she was a library media clerk.
She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, cooking, reading and camping. She is survived by her husband William “Bill” Lilley of Coos Bay; mother Gloria Miles of Port Orchard; son Kyle and his wife Kimberly See of Sacramento, Calif.; daughters Andrea and her husband Monte Mitchell of Hillsboro, Ore., Kati and her husband Scott Banks of North Bend, Ore., and Gretchen See of Medford, Ore.; brother Dick and his wife Lynn Miles of Port Orchard; and grandchildren Landry See, Tucker Bird, Dawson Mitchell, Brenden See, Kelly See, Brittany Banks and Kasey Banks.
A memorial service was held on March 18 at the First Presbyterian in Coos Bay.
Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel.
White, Joseph Wednesday, 10 Mar 2004
Joseph F. White, Jr., 48, a resident of Longbranch, died March 10, 2004.
He was born on Oct. 15, 1955, in Norfolk, Va., to Joseph Sr. and Mary (Locke) White.
He graduated from West High School in Bremerton in 1973.
For many years he worked with the Laborers Union-Local 252 as a deck blaster at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He enjoyed being on the water — sailing and whitewater rafting. He also enjoyed basketball.
He is survived by his companion Sharon Danger of Long-branch; brother Tim White of Orlando, Fla.; sisters Marilynn Schultz and Kim Bailey of Bremerton and Diane Severtsen of Las Vegas, Nev.; and 10 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held on Friday, March 26, at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.

Pauley, Irene Tuesday, 09 Mar 2004
Irene M. Pauley, 52, a resident of Port Orchard, died March 9 at Life Care Center of Port Orchard.
She was born Jan. 21, 1952, in Bremerton to Bill and Ileen (Northway) Davidson.
She attended Bremerton High School and later worked as a secretary at Keyport and as a certified nurse’s assistant at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
She enjoyed going to garage sales, cleaning and rearranging furniture in her home and going to the casino.
She is survived by her companion, Kevin McLean of Port Orchard; her son Michael Pauley of Bremerton; her daughter Trinka Pauley of Bremerton; her brothers Terry Davidson of Ohio and Bill Davidson of Ohio; her sisters Cathy Brown of Olalla and Linda Jackson of Tacoma; her grandchildren David Eisenhower, Jesse Eisenhower, Starr Blanco, Brook Ashley Pauley and Michael Pauley, Jr.; also numerous nieces, nephews and two great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson Jordan James Pauley-Hudson.
No public services have yet been scheduled.

Edward Sheridan Pearson, 75, of Port Orchard, died Dec. 26, 2003, in Palm Springs, Calif.
He was born Feb. 3, 1928, to Andrew Jackson and Laurena Victoria Hawley Pearson in York, Neb.
He married
Betty Ann Swihart on June 30, 1950, in Puyallup.
He was a retired sheetmetal journeyman from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Shop 99, and a literature evangelist for 14 years for the Washington Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
He was a member of the Port Orchard Seventh-day Adventist Church and enjoyed carving with Kitsap Woodcarvers.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.
He is survived by his wife, Betty of Port Orchard; daughters Sheri Burgess and Rebecca Rogers, both of Shelton; son David of Lacey; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at Port Orchard Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5000 Bethel Road SE, Port Orchard, on Apr. 24, at 4 p.m.
Interment will be later.
