Athyleen M. Basham
June 19, 1908 --Nov. 21, 2003
Athyleen M. Basham, 95, died of cancer in her Port Townsend home.
She was born in New Haven, Mich., to Edward and Wilhelmena (King) Donner.
She married
Samuel Basham in Detroit in 1929.
As a teacher in the Detroit school system, Mrs. Basham taught business education before retiring to Rio Rancho, N.M., in 1969.
She moved to Port Townsend in May to be near family, and is survived by son and daughter-in-law John William and Margaret ``Peggy" Basham.
Her husband died in 1961.
Services: At her request, none. Burial will be in White Chapel cemetery, Troy, Mich. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Charity of choice.
Lorena Ann Gahr
April 25, 1935 -- Nov. 18, 2003
Lorena Ann Gahr, 68, died in Port Townsend from complications of diabetes.
She was born in Bremerton to Loren and Dorothy Ann (Kunz) Northup, and spent most of her youth in Port Townsend.
She married
Paul E. Gahr in Port Townsend on Oct. 18, 1958.
As a military wife, Mrs. Gahr accompanied her husband to his duty stations, including Europe, before returning to Port Townsend upon his retirement.
She enjoyed ballet and painting, and taught ballet in Port Townsend.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gahr's survivors include son and daughter-in-law Paul E. and Tina Gahr Jr. of Sequim; son Rodney A. Gahr of Cancun, Mexico; daughters and sons-in-law Linda Ann and George Lutz of Columbus, Ohio, and Christina M. and Luis Canul of Seattle; her mother of Port Townsend; sisters and brothers-in-law Patricia and Jess Bondurant of Chimacum and Deana and Frank Query of Shelton; and six grandchildren.
Services: None. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge.

Velma Johnson
July 9, 1910 -- Nov. 22, 2003
Lifelong Port Angeles resident Velma Johnson died at age 93.
She was the daughter of Perry Jackson and Grace Jane (Dean) Woods and lived her whole life on the same block of West Ninth Street.
She married
Virgil Johnson in Everett on July 6, 1929.
She work with her husband as bookkeeper at Irwin and Johnson auto dealership in Port Angeles until 1955.
In addition to spending time with her family, Mrs. Johnson enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and collecting matchbooks.
Her survivors include sons Gerald Johnson and Ronald Johnson, both of Port Angeles; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services: Private family services will be under the direction of Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles.

Gary Michael Kish
Aug. 2, 1931 -- Nov. 11, 2003
Gary Michael Kish of Port Angeles died in Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, of a massive stroke following open-heart surgery. He was 72.
He was born in Port Angeles to Talford and Lucille (Nichols) Kish.
Mr. Kish played football at Port Angeles High School and holds the school record for the longest punt. He also established a personal best for pole vaulting at 10 feet 6 inches.
Mr. Kish attended Seattle University, where he married
his college sweetheart, Sharon Rae Headrick on April 4, 1959.
During the Korean War, he was a Coast Guard hospital corpsman serving on Midway Island and aboard Navy vessels.
Mr. Kish was a ranger in Olympic National Park in 1956-58, and had a lake in the park named for his wife -- Lake Sharon.
Mr. Kish owned and operated Little Mountain Corp., a cedar-shake mill in Port Angeles, from the early 1960s to the early 1990s.
After retiring from the mill, Mr. Kish was a full-time rancher who raised thoroughbred horses, poled white-faced Herefords and donkeys.
He enjoyed caring for his animals and feeding the wild creatures that visited his 65-acre Port Angeles ranch.
He also worked part-time as a longshoreman in Port Angeles in the 1990s.
Mr. Kish and his wife were members of Circle O Square Dance Club for many years.
He was the last surviving member of the Clallam County Sheriff's Mounted Posse, which he joined in 1959.
He also was a member of St. Mary's Traditional Catholic Church of Tacoma, and a lifetime member of Elks Naval Lodge in Port Angeles.
Survivors, all of Port Angeles, include his wife; son and daughter-in-law Spike and Robyn Kish; daughters and sons-in-law Kimberly Ann and Randy Lemon, and Tamara Rae and Tony Barlow; his father; and brother and sister-in-law Jack and Linda Kish.
Also surviving are sister and brother-in-law Carole and John Jenis of Seattle; sister Judy White of Virginia; and nine grandchildren.
Services: Private services were held with the Requiem Mass celebrated by the Very Rev. Father Casimir Puskorius. Interment was at Ocean View cemetery in Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Clara Kunkel
May 16, 1913 -- Nov. 19, 2003
Former Port Angeles resident Clara Kunkel died of cardiomyopathy in Shoreline at age 90.
She was the fourth of 12 children born in Forest, Wis., to Frederick and Bertha (Baeze) Fauks.
She married
Bill Kunkel in Wisconsin on May 28, 1933. They moved to Port Angeles with their three children in 1948.
Mrs. Kunkel was known for her skill in decorating cakes and arranging flowers.
She moved to Shoreline to be near family 5½ years ago.
Mrs. Kunkel is survived by daughter and son-in-law Karyn and Gary Budnick-Haug of Shoreline; daughter-in-law Mary Lou Kunkel of Maui; sister Edna Owen of St. Paul, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law Dee and Ralph Spendal of Salem, Ore.; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years; sons Earl and Rodger Kunkel; and nine brothers and sisters.
Services: Memorial will be announced later. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ruth Nataroff
Oct. 6, 1946 -- Nov. 21, 2003
Forks resident Ruth Nataroff died of bone cancer at age 57.
She was born in San Francisco to Walter Dave and Margaret Jeane (Crawford) Nataroff, and was raised in Tacoma, where she went to Stadium High School.
After moving to Los Angeles, where she lived for many years, she worked California Federal Bank.
Ms. Nataroff came to Forks to live with her mother, Margaret Baso, in 1996.
She was a member of the Northwest Artists League and the Art Gallery in Forks. She also earned her certificate in computers from Peninsula College.
In addition to her art, she enjoyed her gardening and flowers.
Ms. Nataroff, who never married
, is survived by her mother; uncles Phillip Marbut of California and John Sinnot of Salem, Ore.; and aunts Charlene Sinnot of Denver, Olga Baso and Helen Hanson, both of Seattle.
Services: A December memorial will be announced. Cremains were scattered according to her wishes. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, was in charge.
Anthony Turriziani
Dec. 5, 1912 -- Nov. 13, 2003
Anthony Turriziani, 90, died in Sherwood Assisted Living at Sequim. He had Alzheimer's disease.
He was born to Nickolas and Maria (D'Anabella) Turriziani in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He related a wealth of family stories about life in New York during the 1920s and '30s, including one that his father was among the Italian stone masons who built the base for the Statue of Liberty.
He married
Amelia Mohar in Brooklyn on Aug. 10, 1937.
Mr. Turriziani was a carpenter and builder. He also made furniture for his wife.
Mr. Turriziani was a member of the Elks Lodge in California. He came to Clallam County in 1991.
Survivors include son Anthony Turriziani of North Bend; daughter Marie Andersen of Sunland, Calif.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His wife died Dec. 19, 2002.
Services: None. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Charles E. Gilliland
Oct. 12, 1921 -- Nov. 22, 2003
Charles E. Gilliland died at Crestwood Convalescent Center in Port Angeles at age 82.
Mr. Gilliland was born to Edward and Edna (Stolz) Gilliland in Hazel.
Mr. Gilliland moved to Port Angeles at the age of 19.
He married
Maxine Nichols in Port Angeles on Aug. 9, 1942.
He was a plumber for 45 years.
Mr. Gilliland was an elder in Independent Bible Church for many years.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Ida Gail Rayment of Port Angeles and Grace Lynn Schroeder of Union, Ore.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: Tuesday, Nov. 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. visitation at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1 p.m. memorial service at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles. Pastor Michael Jones will officiate.

VIRGINIA V. ``GINNY" ARNDT
Feb. 21, 1939 -- Nov. 19, 2003
Virginia V. ``Ginny" Arndt passed away on November 19, 2003, at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles at the age of 64 from respiratory failure.
She was born on February 21, 1939, in Mayville, Wisconsin, to Arnold J. and Ida (Kannas) Schultz. She married
Carlton Arndt on September 18, 1960.
Ginny was a self-taught artist and designer of pressed flower and wildlife art and jewelry. She was involved in producing beautiful greeting cards, bookmarks and pictures with pressed flowers.
She had done approximately 4, 000 cards, which have found their way to 33 countries around the world. She displayed and sold her work at the Sequim Lavender Festival, Skagit Tulip Festival, various juried shows and the Sequim, Port Angeles, and Port Townsend farmers markets.
She enjoyed the outdoors, working with nature and growing flowers and gardening. She would rather be working in the yard than ``going to the mall." She also enjoyed gourmet cooking, photography, quilting, hiking, beachcombing and antiques.
She was a member of the Dungeness Community Church and the Sunbonnet Sue Quilters.
She is survived by her husband, Carl, of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Christopher and Karin Arndt, Tim and Tami Arndt and Peter Arndt, all of Sequim; brothers and sisters-in-law Romaine and Miriam Schultz of Carson City, Nevada, and Wilfred and Margaret Schultz of Monmouth, Oregon; sisters and brothers-in-law, Winona and John Belligan of Greendale, Wisconsin, and Ramona and Ruben Hagen of Mayville, Wisconsin.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 24, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel. Pastor Tom Rief will officiate. Inurnment will take place in Mayville, Wisconsin.

Ginny will be greatly missed by her husband and sons. She was a selfless person who was always concerned with the happiness and welfare of those close to her. Her legacy will live on in her creations.
