Clyde E. Phelps
Sept. 5, 1903 -- Dec. 31, 2003
Sequim centenarian Clyde E. Phelps died of complications of old age.
He was born in Odessa to Sidney A. and Blance (Balch) Phelps.
He served in the Army at Fort George Wright in Spokane in 1925-26.
He joined the Spokane Police Department in 1929.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Phelps returned to the Army and attained the rank of major. After the peace treaty with Japan was signed, he went to Occupation Headquarters in Tokyo to help with reconstruction of the police force.
After returning to his own career in law enforcement, Mr. Phelps graduated with the 44th class of the FBI Academy, then became an instructor at the Washington State Patrol School.
In 1949, he was appointed Spokane chief of police. He retired on Jan. 1, 1957.
In another career, he worked 10 years with the International Cooperative Administration (later known as the Agency for International Development), accepting assignments to Baghdad, Iraq; Mogadishu, Somalia; and Lima, Peru.
His wife waited in Rome during the nine months Mr. Phelps was detained in Iraq at the military uprising in which the king was killed.
When given two hours in which to leave the country, he was the only passenger on a commercial plane provided by the U.S. government to fly him out.
The Phelpses retired to Spokane in 1965 and relocated to Sequim in 1967.
He was active in the Grange, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Retired Law Enforcement Group, as well as being a patron of Eastern Star and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a past master.
Mr. Phelps' first marriage, to Elosia Harvey, ended in divorce.
He married
Violet Eller on Dec. 1, 1934. She died in 1982.
A third marriage, to Ruth Penner-Lochow in 1986, ended with her death in 1996.
His survivors include daughter Claudia Parker of Lake Forest Park; son Lewis Phelps of Spokane; stepson Peter Lochow of Sequim; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son George Phelps.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 10, 2 p.m., memorial in Sequim Masonic Temple, 700 S. Fifth Ave. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Arid Priest
June 13, 1920 -- Jan. 6, 2004
Lifelong North Olympic Peninsula resident Robert Arid Priest died in his Sequim home at age 83.
He was born in Sequim to Robert Cinclair and Edith Orbie (Prettyman) Priest.
In addition to being a dairy farmer with his father in Sequim, he was active in the logging and construction industries, mostly in Port Angeles and on the West End.
During World War II, Mr. Priest served in the Navy from September 1943 through December 1945 as a hospital corpsman working as an operating room technician.
He belonged to Woodworkers of America and the Teamsters. He was a past member of The Cooties and American Legion, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His marriages to Patsy Ann Sinder and Dorthy Iverson ended in divorce.
Velma May Gilbert, whom he married
in Sequim on Nov. 8, 1968, survives him.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons Karl Priest, Geane Priest and Mark Priest, all of Seattle; stepsons Richard Chipman of Tacoma, Raymond Chipman of Sequim and Clyde Chipman of Weiser, Idaho; daughters Karen Freelinger of Auburn and Beth Trovessi of Kent; stepdaughters Rovilla Anguiano of Forks and Arlene Granum of Port Angeles; brother James C. Priest and sister Flora Gillilan, both of Sequim; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons Fred Priest and John Priest, and sister Irene Jones.

Orma Stepp
Feb. 12, 1915 -- Jan. 5, 2004
Port Angeles homemaker Orma Stepp died of pneumonia in Olympic Care Center, Sequim. She was 88.
She was born in Pe El to Lauren and Eva (Ewing) Hand.
She married
Honor B. Stepp in Green Brier, Mo., on Aug. 13, 1932.
She is survived by sons Robert Stepp and Dennis Stepp and daughter Bonny Richards, all of Port Angeles; sister Bernice Ewing; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Her husband died Jan. 16, 1980.
Services: A private graveside service was held in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy G. Hansen
Aug. 28, 1922 -- Dec. 29, 2003
Dorothy G. Hansen of Port Angeles died in Crestwood Convalescent Center at age 81.
She was born in Bellingham to Charles Everett and Lennie (Gadberry) Spaulding.
She married
Herbert Hansen in Bellingham on June 29, 1940.
The Hansens moved to Forks in 1952. After his death in 1970, she relocated to Port Angeles in 1971.
Mrs. Hansen opened a clothing shop, Show Bridle Boutique. She also was a certified nurse's aide at Crestwood Convalescent Center in 1975-85.
Survivors include companion Leo Shipley of Sequim; daughters and sons-in-law Diana and Robert Gibbs and Barbara and Allen Brunstad, all of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Kurt Kingston of Anacortes; brothers Gene Spaulding of Forks and Ronald Spaulding of Alaska; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Lester Spaulding and Donald Spaulding and sisters Pearl Hammond, Stella Lehman and Mary Marshall.
Services: Jan. 31, 1 p.m., Celebration of Life in Parkwood Clubhouse, 261520 Highway 101, Sequim. Inurnment was in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Ann Meyer
June 22, 1931 -- Dec. 31, 2003
Port Angeles resident Nancy Ann Meyer died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Olympic Medical Center at age 72.
She was born in Waukeshaw, Wis., to Harold and Dorothy Ann (Bassett) Race.
She worked with the Red Cross at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, in 1954-55. She then was district executive for Camp Fire Girls in Los Angeles and manager of an apartment complex in Braunfels, Texas.
She married
Rudolph ``Rudy" Meyer in Pasadena, Calif., on Nov. 28, 1957.
Mrs. Meyer was an organ donor for a liver recipient in the Chicago area.
Survivors include her husband; son and daughter-in-law Karl and Elizabeth Meyer of Port Townsend; and sisters and brothers-in-law Susan and Lyn Haen and Kit and Ken Kramer, all of Sarasota, Fla.
Services: At her request, none. Ashes were scattered at sea. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, was in charge.
Memorials: Mrs. Meyer requested that others register as organ donors.
Robert Earl Millman
April 19, 1937 -- Jan. 5, 2004
Robert Earl Millman died in his Sequim home at age 66. His wife was at his side.
Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Florence L. Nattinger
Sept. 12, 1917 -- Jan. 6, 2004
Florence L. Nattinger died in Port Angeles at age 86.
She was born in Seattle to Donald Haswell and Clara (Dean) Lutz.
She graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1935 and from she graduated from University of Washington in 1940.
Following a previous marriage to Arthur Stetson, who died in 1945, she married
John A. Nattinger in Port Angeles on Aug. 16, 1953.
Except for a short time in Aberdeen, she lived in Port Angeles and was a professional bookkeeper.
Mrs. Nattinger enjoyed the family's cabin at Lake Crescent as well as spending time at Hurricane Ridge. Her hobbies included flowers, gardening, bridge and crafts.
She was a member of the Clallam County Family YMCA and a volunteer with Boy Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels and Children's Orthopedic Hospital.
Survivors include her husband; sons and daughter-in-law Ken L. and Susan Nattinger of Port Angeles, John D. and Cathie Stetson of Steilacoom and Lawrence L. and Dolores Stetson of Tacoma; sister Frances L. Jones of Shoreline; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 10, 2 p.m., memorial and reception in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. John Maxwell will officiate.

Candice Rose `Candy' Piccolotti
Feb. 8, 1954 -- Jan. 5, 2004
Neah Bay resident Candice Rose ``Candy" Piccolotti died in Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, of a cerebral hemorrhage. She was 49.
She was born in Sacramento, Calif., to Henry and Dianna (Ortiz) Piccolotti.
She attended schools in the Philippines, California, Oklahoma, Neah Bay and Hawaii as a child of a military family. She graduated from high school in Honolulu.
Her pastimes included reading and playing bingo.
Ms. Piccolotti settled in Neah Bay, where she worked for the Head Start program, managed Best Bay Resort and pursued her interest in cooking by contributing dishes to ceremonial dinners.
Marriages to Ben Johnson and John Leonard ended in divorce.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law John and Jamie Leonard Jr. of Puyallup; daughter Allison Leonard of Neah Bay; mother Dianna Cross of Port Angeles; sister Carol Shervem of Fresno, Calif., and Linda Cochran of Kona, Hawaii; and three grandchildren.
Ms. Piccolotti was preceded in death by two infant sons, her father and her stepfather, Ellis Cross.
Services: Today, Jan. 8, visitation prior to the 1 p.m. funeral in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Ave., Port Angeles. The Rev. David Moffitt will officiate at the funeral.
Saturday, Jan. 10, Celebration of Life dinner at noon in the Neah Bay Commmunity Hall. Cremains to be scattered over the Neah Bay graves of her infant sons.

B. Carmen Rivera
Dec. 12, 1913 -- Jan. 6, 2004
B. Carmen Rivera died in her Sequim home at age 90.

E. Marie Rushton
Nov. 23, 1924 -- Jan. 6, 2004
Port Angeles resident Marie Rushton died at age 79.
She was born in Centralia to Fred H. and Cecil (Owens) Williams. The family moved to Port Angeles when she was 6.
She married
Walter B. Rushton, who was serving in the Navy, on March 27, 1944.
After raising her family, Mrs. Rushton worked in a small grocery store for five years, then was hostess at the former Aggie's Restaurant for seven years.
She is survived by son Donald Rushton and daughter Karen Grall, both of Port Angeles; daughter Marcia Quartararo of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
