LYDIA TOBER DUNFORD BRIGGS
Lydia Tober Dunford Briggs died on January 26, 2004, of age-related causes; she was 99.
She was born October 2, 1904, in Poland, to Emil and Anna (Kessler) Tober. In approximately 1912, the family emigrated to the United States, where they joined relatives in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived for many years.
In her early 1920s, Lydia married
Harvey (Jack) Dunford, from Ontario, Canada. They had two children, Jacqueline and Roland. They divorced after 18 years of marriage.
In 1944, she met and married
Robert John Charlton Briggs. They loved each other dearly and their marriage ended with his death in 1990.
Lydia's great interests, other than her family, were her garden and the organizations to which she belonged, namely the ``8/40, " a service organization of the American Legion.
In 1996, she moved from her home in Costa Mesa, California, to reside with her daughter and son-in-law in Sequim. In later years, she lived at the Fifth Avenue Retirement Center and then at Sherwood Assisted Living.
She will be greatly missed.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Jacqueline and Leo Suffia; sister Anita Mellinger of Ventura, California; grandson and wife Gary and Patricia Suffia of Cayucos, California; granddaughter and husband Tinamarie and Marc Ley of Newport Beach, California; great-grandchildren Emma and Chloe Suffia, Lindsay Allen, Melissa and Nicole Ley; stepdaughter Barbara George of Huntington Beach, California, and grandson Jim George, as well as many friends and acquaintances.
MATTHEW AARON SNARSKI SCHRECK (MATT SCHRECK)
Matthew died in an automobile accident on Highway 101 West.
Born to Robin M (Snarski) Green and Jeffrey R. Schreck in Tacoma, Washington, May 4, 1982.
He moved to Port Angeles in January 1985 and attended school at Franklin Elementary and Roosevelt Middle School, and graduated from Port Angeles High School in June 2001.
Matthew was fun-loving, outgoing and had an adventurous spirit. He became a certified commercial diver at Divers Institute of Technology in Seattle in May 2003, at which time he went on to work for Stolt Offshore Inc. in the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. He worked there for six months as a diving technician.
In his senior year of high school he had the opportunity to travel to Beijing, China, and attend school there, live with a family and see the Great Wall.
Matt had a love for his music and enjoyed playing guitar. He also displayed an artistic talent in his drawings. During his school years he was active in sports including soccer and baseball, and was a member of the Hurricane Ridge Ski Club.
He is survived by his mother and father, his brother David, stepbrother Aaron Hills, stepsister Melany West, stepmother Delaina Schreck and stepfather Max Green, grandparents Marilyn and Gerald Snarski of Tacoma and Elizabeth Schreck of New Jersey, 11 aunts and uncles, seven cousins, and our pets, Duchess and Precious.
He will be loved and missed by all his family and friends.
The family requests in lieu of flowers or gifts that donations be made in Matthew's name to a charity of choice.
Visitation 3-8 p.m., Rosary 7 p.m. at Harper-Ridgeview Chapel on Friday, Jan. 30. Celebration of Life at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers, Saturday, Jan. 31, 1 p.m. Reception to follow.
BERNICE WILHELM SHAFER HURD
Born: April 14, 1912; died: January 26, 2004
Bernice was born in South Bend, Indiana. She graduated from Tacoma's Lincoln High School in 1930.
Subsequent to her attending Moody Bible Institute, from which she graduated, she married
Edwin Q. Hurd in November 1934.
In later years she attended Pacific Lutheran University and received her teaching degree. She taught in the Federal Way school district and retired in 1976 when she and her husband moved to Sequim.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin. She has one son, Paul, and daughter-in-law, Joanne. Grandchildren and great grandchildren are: Lori Hurd and daughter Bryanna; Doug Hurd, wife LuAnn and daughter Taylor Jo; Scott Hurd, wife Debbie along with their children, Jon, David Benjamin and Grace; Kiersten Stimets, husband Bob and their son Garodd; and grandson Rodd Karp.
She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Elsie Hurd of Clinton, Connecticut, and Hinka Shafer of Vancouver, Washington, along with several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
She will be missed, but we rejoice knowing she's home with the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators, P.O. Box 628200, Orlando, FL 32862.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Sequim Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 2004. Interment will be at Sequim View cemetery.
Alba Halverson Hiestand
May 1, 1919 -- Jan. 19, 2004
Alba Halverson Hiestand, formerly of Sequim, died of cancer in Bay Pointe Retirement Center, Bremerton, at age 84.
She was born to Henry S. and Amy (Nelson) Halverson in Fertile, Minn.
She married
Donald R. Hiestand in Fertile on Sept. 13, 1941.
Mrs. Hiestand earned her bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of North Dakota, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
Mrs. Hiestand lived in Pittsburgh, Pa.; and Shawnee Mission, Kan. before moving to Sequim, where she helped start Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church and was a member of Peninsula Pocket Pi Beta Phi Sorority Alumnae Association.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Jamie and Barry Stevens of Kingston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and sisters Dorothy White and Marlys Olds.
Services: Feb. 13, 2 p.m., memorial in Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave., with the Rev. Jack Anderson officiating.

Stella Hazel Houghtaling
March 22, 1908 -- Jan. 27, 2004
Port Angeles resident Stella Hazel Houghtaling died of respiratory arrest at age 95.
She was born in Blackwater, N.D., to Horatio and Emma (Hall) James.
She married
William Henry Houghtaling, who died in 1944.
Mrs. Houghtaling, who was a printing binder, lived in Clallam County for 12 years.
Survivors include son Robert Houghtaling of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; daughters Rose Walker of Port Angeles and Betty Gilmore of Alabama; 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, sons William Henry Houghtaling Jr. and three grandchildren preceded her in death.
Services: Thursday, Jan. 29, 9-11 a.m., visitation in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Graveside service at 1 p.m. at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Chaplain Dennis E. Niva will officiate.

James P. Reeves
Dec. 20, 1922 -- Jan. 26, 2004
James P. Reeves died in Sequim at age 81.
He was born to Paul Beatty and Eva (Clark) Reeves in Columbus, Ind., where he grew up.
He graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1943.
During World War II, from 1943-46, Mr. Reeves served as a topographical engineer with the 937th Engineering Aviation Camouflage Battalion in the European Theater at Normandy, France, and Luxembourg.
In Columbus, Ind., Mr. Reeves was president of Reeves Sales & Engineering Inc., owner and vice president of Como Plastics, product manager of Reeves Division of Reliance Electric, and advertising, sales and plant manager for Reeves Pulley Co.
He was also active in the Kiwanis Club, Boys & Girls Club and Foundation for Youth as well as former director of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Junior Chamber of Commerce, and a deacon, trustee and elder of United Presbyterian Church.
He was director of Reeves Research & Development in Issaquah.
Mr. Reeves retired to Green Valley, Ariz., in 1988.
He moved to Sequim in 2000.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim.
He is survived by his wife, and Clark M. Reeves of Sequim; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Thomas W. Reeves of Issaquah and brother Lt. Milton C. Reeves, killed in action in Italy during World War II.
Services: Friday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitation in Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St. Funeral at 1 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Gisela Taber will officiate.
Burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

Marvin Jay Ruhs
March 31, 1939 --Jan. 25, 2004
Marvin Jay Ruhs died of cancer in his Port Angeles home at age 64.
He was born in Carroll, Iowa, to Harry Edwards and Leoto Berniece (Smith) Ruhs.
He married
Carolyn Ann McVey on March 20, 1981.
Mr. Ruhs worked as a receiving clerk at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane for 27 years.
Mr. Ruhs, who was a member of Sequim Valley Foursquare Church, enjoyed woodworking, remote-control cars, boating and fishing.
In addition to his wife, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Toby and Jackie Ruhs and son Tim Ruhs, all of Spokane; daughter and son-in-law Shari and Chris Killion of Mililani, Hawaii; mother of Port Angeles; sister Marlene Gahringer of Wenatchee; and eight granddaughters.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 31, 11 a.m., memorial and reception in Sequim Valley Foursquare Church, 9090 Old Olympic Highway. The Rev. Randy Hurbut will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine L. Strong
Dec. 3, 1924 -- Jan. 22, 2004
Sequim resident Geraldine L. Strong died of pneumonia in Port Angeles at age 79.
She was born in Winchester, Idaho, to Harry and Florence (Drobney) Stearns.
She married
Charley J. Strong in 1943.
Mrs. Strong lived in Idaho until she moved to Sequim in June 2003 to live with her daughter.
Survivors include sons Charley J. Strong Jr. and William A. Strong, both of Lewiston, Idaho; daughter Sharon Y. Kennedy of Port Angeles; brother and sister-in-law Walter and Fay Stearns of Clarkston; brother-in-law Omar Sarbacher of Lewiston; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1980. She was also preceded in death by daughter Cora Eileen Strong and sisters Corky Sarbacher and Eileen Ash.
Services: To be held later in Lewiston, Idaho. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Charles Beutler
April 5, 1909 -- Jan. 24, 2004
Charles ``Chuck" Beutler died in Port Angeles at age 94.
He was born in North Bend, Ohio, to Walter and Margaret Ann (McGavern). The family moved to Port Angeles in 1910.
He married
Mary Hagen in Port Angeles on Aug. 5, 1932.
Mr. Beutler worked for Port Angeles City Light 42 years before retiring in 1972.
In addition to playing baseball in his younger years, he enjoyed golfing and fishing.
Mr. Beutler was a member of the Masonic, Shrine and Amaranth lodges, and was a Past Royal Patron of Amaranth.
Survivors include his wife; sister Lucille Thorlakson of Oak Harbor; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Ronald Beutler in 1996, two brothers and two sisters.

Clifford Forbes
May 25, 1927 -- Jan. 25, 2004
Clifford Forbes died of cancer in his Sequim home at age 76.
He was born in Eureka, Calif., to Oliver Collin and Edna (Sundell) Forbes.
Mr. Forbes served with the Navy in Japan in 1945-47.
He received his bachelor's degree from Humboldt State College in Arcata, Calif., and master's degree and doctorate in zoology and genetics from the University of California, Berkeley.
Mr. Forbes taught at San Francisco State College in 1955-57, then the University of Idaho, Moscow, in 1957-89. His fields were genetics, physiology and computer science. He became professor emeritus in zoology.
He married
Rose Lawe in Moscow, Idaho, on June 6, 1967. The couple moved to Sequim in 2000.
Mr. Forbes was a lifelong camera and binocular enthusiast, a member of the Audubon Society, and an International Executive Service Corps volunteer to Hungary He taught multimedia computer programming to a chef school with a World Bank grant.
He is survived by his wife of Sequim, and son Collin Forbes of Tucson, Ariz.
