JOHN THEIL THOMASON
March 29, 1920 March 2, 2004
John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dolores, sons Paul and Scott, several grandchildren and sister Nella Hyatt.
John was born in Vancouver, Canada.
He served in the U.S. Army, 146th and 167th Field Artillery Battalion.
John worked in banking, primarily at Guarantee National in White Center, and North Western National in Port Angeles.
In his later years, he and Dolores worked in property management.
John was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

LeRoy Garnet Dobbins
Oct. 3, 1938 -- March 6, 2004
Sequim resident LeRoy Garnet Dobbins died in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 65.
He was born in St. Joseph, Mo., to John Benton and Virgie D. (Hoback) Dobbins.
Poor health from the time of his childhood prevented Mr. Dobbins from being employed until 1967, when he became a civilian worker for the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Then in 1984, a series of strokes disabled him.
Mr. Dobbins and his mother moved to Sequim in 1989 to make their home with his sister.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and AARP.
In the time before Mr. Dobbins' health deteriorated further, he enjoyed painting in oils.
He is survived by sister Dolores Evans of Sequim, and brothers Donald D. Dobbins of Oceanside, Calif., and Calvin C. Dobbins of Carlsbad, Calif.
Services: July 23 at 1 p.m., memorial in Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Gisela Tabor will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Marie L. Kelso
Jan. 20, 1915 -- March 6, 2004
Sequim resident Marie L. Kelso died in Port Angeles at age 89.
She was born in Traer, Iowa, to Lawrence L. and Laura (Owen) Leslie.
She studied at Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, then served as an Army nurse with the rank of lieutenant at Fort Benning, Ga.
She married
Earl Harlan Kelso in November 1943
The Kelsos retired first to Phoenix, then to Sequim in 2002.
Mrs. Kelso's survivors include daughter Pamela K. Lindsey of Port Angeles and Penelope R. Jefferson of Arvada, Colo.; sisters Ruth Briggs of California and Fern Murphy of Waterloo, Iowa; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Her husband, who was a retired Army colonel, died in 1984. She was also preceded in death by brothers John Leslie and Roger Leslie.
Services: Private family service will be held in Phoenix. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

KEITH SAULSBURY
A memorial Mass is planned for Keith Saulsbury at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim, followed by a 12:30 reception in celebration of his life at SunLand Golf and Country Club.
Mr. Saulsbury died at Eisenhower Memorial Hospital in Rancho Mirage, California, on March 4, 2004, after complications from a stroke. He was 78.
He was born in Lexington, Nebraska, on Feb. 8, 1926.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Saulsbury was a supervisor for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power until his retirement in 1982, when he moved to Sequim.
He was a snowbird who enjoyed playing golf year-round, in Sequim and in Indio, California. He enjoyed traveling, dancing and the company of friends. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Saulsbury was a member of SunLand Golf and Country Club, Sequim Elks, Knights of Columbus, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Leona Thinnes Saulsbury.
He is survived by his wife, Nadia; son Larry and wife Karen McDonald; granddaughter Michele and husband Pat McCarthy; grandson Patrick and wife Andrea McDonald; two great-granddaughters, Katie McDonald and Claire McCarthy; and one great-grandson, Jack McCarthy; stepson Eric and wife Louise Caldwell and their children, Laura and David; stepdaughter Adair and husband Jay Johnson and their sons, Kevin and Keith; and stepdaughter Alicia Todahl.
He will be remembered by his family for his great sense of humor and his ability to fix anything.

George Greul
July 8, 1950 -- Feb. 21, 2004
Former Port Angeles resident George Greul died of a heart attack in his Gig Harbor home at age 53.
He was born to George John Howard and Susie Irene (McWilliams) Greul in Port Angeles, and lived in Port Angeles most of his life.
He was in the Navy in 1969-72 and served aboard USS Ticonderoga
He had a background in plumbing, welding and general mechanics. He enjoyed the outdoors in general, and hunting and fishing in particular.
Mr. Gruel moved to Gig Harbor five years ago.
Survivors include son Derek Greul, mother Susie Gruel and sister Cherie Lemon, all of Port Angeles; sisters Jane Solberg of Seattle and Julie Eklund of Centralia; brother John Greul of Seattle; and two grandchildren.

Wally Westergaard
June 23, 1921 -- March 4, 2004
Chimacum native Wally Westergaard died in Port Townsend of a brain tumor at age 82.
He born to Christian and Edna (Blanchard) Westergaard on the family's Chimacum Valley farm, where he lived almost his whole life.
He retired after 32 years with Cenex Supply and Marketing.
Mr. Westergaard, who raised purebred black Angus cattle, enjoyed horseback camping in the Olympics and traveling.
He was a member of the Western Washington Angus Association, Jefferson County Fair Board, Chimacum Squares square dance club, PTA and Community Methodist Church.
He also served as a leader with Boy Scouts of America and 4-H, as well as devoting 47 years with Jefferson County Fire Protection District No. 1, which he served as a commissioner.
Mr. Westergaard married
May Christie in Chimacum on Dec. 26, 1941.
Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law Julie and Chuck Boggs, Ellen and Doug Anglin and Leslie and John Freitas, all of Chimacum; daughter Diane Westergaard of Seattle; sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Nancy Westergaard of Roy and Mark and Sherry Westergaard of Monroe; brother Henry Westergaard of McMinnville, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister Frances Deal.
Services: March 21, 2 p.m., memorial in Community United Methodist Church, 130 Church Lane, Chimacum, followed by a celebration of life potluck at the Chimacum Fire Hall.

William Riley Caughran
July 10, 1927 -- Feb. 29, 2004
Dr. William Riley Caughran died of cancer in his Sequim home. He was 76.
He was born in Burley, Idaho, to William Riley and Dora Ada (Marshall) Caughran Sr.
He served with the Medical Corps as a private first class during World War II.
He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho, and served his residency in surgery.
He was a practicing physician and surgeon in Anchorage, Alaska, and Gold Beach, Ore., then owned Rainbow's End RV Park in Carlsborg.
Dr. Caughran, who enjoyed flying, was an Alaskan bush pilot. He also enjoyed boating.
Following a marriage to Pauline McClain, he married
Carol Ann Johnson.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Caughran's survivors include sons Michael S. Caughran of Juneau, Alaska, the Rev. Mark K. Caughran of Bellflower, Calif., Daniel M. Reina of Snohomish, Michael ``Mick" A. Reina of Sand Point, Idaho, and Thomas A. Caughran of Spanaway; daughter Debbie A. Knight of Grants Pass, Ore.; brother Kenneth Caughran of Coos Bay, Ore.; sister Juanita Damarell of Las Vegas, Nev.; 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside service was held in Gold Beach, Ore., with the Rev. Mark Caughran officiating. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, was in charge.

Edward Joseph Kovall
April 26, 1922 -- March 3, 2004
Edward Joseph Kovall, died in his Sequim home, with his family at his side, at age 81.
He was born in Ely, Minn., to Stephen and Margaret (Starecinich) Kovall.
He married
Aira Karasti. on Aug. 9, 1945.
Mr. Kovall was a packaging designer who lived in Chicago and Bellevue before moving to Sequim.
He enjoyed bowling, airplanes and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law Gary Edward and Sue Kovall of Canyon Lake, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Kathy E. and Gary Horton of Everett, Darlene and Kevyn Brazee of Bothell and Sandy and Dennis Egge of Kingston; brother Robert Kovall of Ely, Minn.; sisters Margaret Deyak and Angela Skala, both of Ely, Minn.; sister Alice Kunkel of Mountain View, Calif.; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter

Delbert Bruce Miller
April 26, 1941 -- Feb. 28, 2004
Port Ludlow resident Delbert Bruce Miller died of cancer in Bremerton at age 62.
He was born in Libby, Mont., to Otis ``Toby" and Betty E. (MacNab) Miller.
He graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1960, and served with the Army National Guard in 1961-65, attaining the rank of corporal.
He married
Barbara A. Christopherson in Brownsville Church on Aug. 28, 1972.
Mr. Miller, who lived in Port Gamble and Poulsbo before moving to Port Ludlow, received many awards during his employment as a civil service explosives operator. He retired after 30 years as a supervisor.
As a young adult, he belonged to Torquers Car Club. His later interests included wood carving, collecting and repairing antique clocks, and making cement sculptures.
Mr. Miller's survivors include his wife; sons Robert C. Miller of Port Hadlock and Dennis B. Miller of Seattle; sisters Patricia Seachord of Gorst and Linda Lowe of Suquomish; and two grandchildren.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his young daughter, Zoe Anne.

Theadore S. `Ted' Parker
May 27, 1926 -- March 3, 2004
Port Townsend resident Theadore S. ``Ted" Parker died in his sleep at Kah Tai Care Center. He was 77.
Born in Bremerton to Hunter and Sarah (Smith) Parker, he attended Chimacum High School and, in Seattle, Edison Technical School.
He was a World War II Army combat veteran of both the Battle of the Philippines and occupation of Japan.
Mr. Parker retired as a custodian at the Port Townsend Post Office.
He was a 46-year member of the Elks Lodge, enjoyed fishing and shared a cabin at Marrowstone Island with close friends.
Although he never married
, Mr. Parker was close to his nieces and nephews, giving each one a special name.
His survivors include brothers Warren Parker of Seattle, James Parker of Port Townsend and Richard Parker of Bremerton, and sister Betty McKeown of Port Angeles.
