RICHARD `DICK' HELPENSTELL
Mr. Helpenstell was born in 1921 in Port Angeles to Emil and Ellen Hansen Helpenstell.
He died Friday, March 12, of natural causes.
Mr. Helpenstell was very proud of his pioneer roots. His grandfather and grandmother homesteaded a large waterfront ranch on Lake Crescent at Piedmont beginning at the Lyre River. His mother was born on the ranch around 1890.
He had many memories of the lake, including caretaking at Camp David Junior when it was privately owned.
His father was first mate on the county ferry Storm King, which ran from Fairholm to East Beach prior to construction of U.S. Highway 101.
Before becoming a log truck owner/operator, he was employed by Fibreboard and Crown Zellerbach mills and Sandberg logging.
He married
Barbara Spence in 1941 and remained married
until she preceded him in death in 1997.
His first logging truck was a 1946 Studebaker. It was so slow moving up Elwha Hill on 101 on hot summer days that he would open the door and kneel on the running board while holding on to the steering wheel to cool off.
After that first gas truck, he purchased newer diesel models that had plenty of power -- including air conditioning.
His most unusual adventure occurred in 1950 between Lake Crescent and Sappho along 101 at a highway project. The highway, being realigned, required movement on a large bank of shale.
Upon breaking open a dinner plate-sized piece of shale, an ancient Roman coin fell out. The source of the coin was never determined.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard L. and Coleen Helpenstell, and his daughter and son-in-law, Leanne and Mark Stoughton, all of Port Angeles.
He also leaves five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
