Leona Margaret Boughton
May 2, 1926 -- March 25, 2004
Leona Margaret Boughton died in Port Angeles at age 77.
Mrs. Boughton was born in Red Lake Falls, Minn., to John and Elizabeth (Zins) Johanneck Sr.
She married
John E. Boughton on Oct. 28, 1948.
The Boughtons retired to Sequim in 1988.
Survivors include her husband of Sequim; brothers Sylvester Johanneck of Red Lake Falls, Minn., and John Johanneck Jr. of Crivitz, Wis.; and sisters Frances Marcotte and Evelyn Johanneck, both of Red Lake Falls, Minn.
She was preceded in death by son Robert, daughter Elizabeth, brothers Edward, Clement and Raymond, and sisters Eleanor, Agnes and Gertrude.
Services: Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 30 with the Rev. Thomas W. Beattie presiding. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Eva Fridell
May 27, 1893 -- March 20, 2004
Sequim centenarian Eva Fridell died from congestive heart failure at age 110.
She was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, to George and Sarah (Carlson) Greenwood and received formal schooling through ninth grade but, with a nearly photographic memory, was largely self-taught.
She was an avid reader with an enthusiasm that ranged from the Bible through the classics, historical novels and books authored by Carl Sagan and Joseph Campbell. She also memorized poetry and liked to recite it on appropriate occasions.
On Sept. 5, 1910, she married
Louis E. Fridell.
In her earlier years, Mrs. Fridell was a housewife and a sales clerk for the Bon Marche. Later, she was owner and office manager of Omak Laundry and Dry Cleaners.
She was also a gardener and a world traveler and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Fridell is survived by daughters Jean P. Saunders of Port Angeles and Louise E. McCausland of Redmond; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1974. She was also preceded in death by son Robert B. Fridell, brother Benjamin Greenwood and sisters Florence Oslund and Bertha Goodwin.
Services: A private family memorial in Kirkland will be held on May 1. Burial will be in Cedar Lawns Memorial Gardens, Redmond. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Elizabeth Tomlinson
July 13, 1932 -- March 17, 2004
Port Angeles resident Dorothy Elizabeth Tomlinson, 71, died in Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, from complications following surgery.
She was born in Enterprise, Ore., to Dick and Louise (Whitmore) Zellner.
In 1949, she married
Leonard Caynor in California; they divorced in 1957.
She married
Cecil Ray Tomlinson of Port Angeles in Reno, Nev., on July 12, 1966.
During Mrs. Tomlinson's career, she worked as a secretary, for Burbee in Walla Walla then, until retirement, for the Lauridsen Boulevard Group Home in Port Angeles.
She was a member of Fairview Bible Church.
Mrs. Tomlinson is survived by her husband, son and daughter-in-law Ricky Caynor and Jane Maxfield-Caynor, all of Port Angeles; brother Gilbert Zellnar and sister Marty Colbo, both of Orangeville, Calif.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Dick Zellnar of Oregon.
Services: April 4, from noon to dusk, celebration of life potluck at Heart o' the Hills Campground (Olympic National Park Site D) at Port Angeles. Funeral Alternatives of Washington, Sumner, was in charge of private burial.
HELEN B. EDER
Helen Eder passed away on Dec. 11, 2003, at Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, Washington.
She was 81.
Helen Eder was born on April 9, 1922, to Edna Hamilton (Newby) and Walton Hamilton, in Chehalis, Washington.
She attended elementary and junior high school in Chehalis. Helen graduated Chehalis High School and later attended the University of Washington.
She enlisted in the Army during World War II, and was stationed in Alabama as a finance clerk.
Helen married
Leonard Eder on Oct. 9, 1948, in Chehalis. The family lived in Seattle, Washington, and then moved to Port Angeles, Washington, in 1961.
She was a volunteer in Campfire for 25 years, and also served on the executive board.
Helen loved animals. She enjoyed taking care of the animals on her parent's farm in Chehalis and loved dogs and cats. She also enjoyed knitting sweaters and writing novels.
Helen is survived by sons Tony, Walton, Kelvin, and daughter Barbara Haigh, sister Alice McCormick, and eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Eder, her brother Richard Hamilton, and her sister Dorothy Schroeder.
Family services were held at Evergreen-Washelli cemetery in Seattle, Washington.

MAJOR (BILL) GROTTS
Former Alaska resident Major (Bill) Grotts passed on March 14, 2004, at home in Sequim, Washington.
Per his request, no service will be held.
Mr. Grotts was born in Wetumpka, Oklahoma, Oct. 3, 1917, to Jacob Allen and Nola Wimberly Grotts.
He came to Alaska in 1946 with the CAA (which later became the FAA) working the radar on the Dew Line at Barter Island and Naknek before moving to Fairbanks in 1949. There, in 1950, he married
Imogen (Jimmy) Johnson and worked at the air traffic control center at Fort Wainwright until his retirement in 1972.
He then moved to the Yakima Valley in Washington where he owned a small orchard.
In 1981, he moved to Sequim.
He was preceded in death by his wife Imogen.
He was an extraordinary storyteller and avid reader. His tales of the Depression era of Oklahoma and his Alaska adventures were spellbinding.
Major was a member of the Masons and Elks club.He leaves his son, Bill Grotts of Sequim, son and daughter in law Carl and Karen Grotts of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter and son in law Sue and Jeff Kohnert of Sequim, seven grandchildren, his brother Harry Grotts of California, his sister Kathryn Johnson of Arizona, and sister Sue Chavez of Oklahoma. Also his dog, Beau, and many friends he met along the way.
Shirley Klahn Fox
Aug. 26, 1923 -- March 23, 2004
Forks resident Shirley Klahn Fox died at age 80.

Vincent Leonard McCord
Oct. 3, 1927 -- March 24, 2004
Vincent Leonard McCord died in his Port Angeles home at age 76.
He was born in Wenatchee to Vernon Lee and Velma Inace (Snode) McCord.
He served with the Navy during World War II.
He married
Matilda Marie ``Tilly" Deerheim on July 5, 1946.
Mr. McCord was an electrician for Crown Zellerbach.
In addition to spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Mr. McCord's survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law Vern and Pam McCord of Solomor; daughter and son-in-law Sandi and Steven Grant of Moses Lake; brothers Clayton McCord and Don McCord of Entiont; sister Mary Helen Seat of Entiont; sisters Donella Fetchner and Inace Andrews, both of Wenatchee and Lily Saunders of Graham; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Monday, March 29, 11 a.m., graveside in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Eldon Officer will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Frank Ramsey
July 30, 1933 -- March 23, 2004
Port Townsend resident Frank Ramsey died of pneumonia in Seattle at age 70.
He was born in Widen Clay County, W.Va., to Bruce and Dora (Taylor) Ramsey, and grew up in Idamay, W.Va.
He enlisted in the Army in 1953.
He married
Sally Taylor in Summersville, W.Va., on March 15, 1962.
The Ramseys moved to Jefferson County in 1969, and he worked at the Port Townsend Paper mill until 1984.
His hobbies included coaching softball, playing baseball and cards.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Franklin and Janet Ramsey of Port Townsend; daughters and sons-in-law Dawn and Bob Madden and Mary and Mike Miller, all of Port Townsend; mother Dora of Fairmont, W.Va.; brother LeLand Ramsey and sisters and brothers-in-law Bonnie and Charlie Shaw and Jeanie and John Ravis, all of Fairmont, W.Va.; Doris and Merlin Biggs of Romney, W.Va.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
His wife died Dec. 21, 2002. Mr. Ramsey was also preceded in death by his father, brother James and sister Violet Ramsey.
Services: Saturday, March 27, noon-3 p.m., potluck hosted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7498, 221 Masonic Hall Road, Port Hadlock. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
Jennie Louella Shillington
July 12, 1912 -- March 23, 2004
Jennie Louella Shillington died in Sequim at age 91.
She was born to Eluis and Bessie (Maze) Kuhns in Barnett, Pa., where she grew up.
She married
Vern Shillington at Niagara Falls, N.Y., in 1928.
During her working years, Mrs. Shillington was employed as a telephone operator.
In 1996, she moved from Largo, Fla., to Sequim.
Mrs. Shillington enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was an active member of Sequim Bible Church.
Survivors include son Richard Shillington of Bonsall, Calif.; daughter Dolores Sparks of Clearwater, Fla.; nine grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband died in December 1984. Mrs. Shillington was also preceded in death by son Vern, three brothers and one sister.

`SIR' CHARLES A. TAYLOR
May 10, 1919 March 9, 2004
``Sir" Charles Arthur Taylor passed away last Tuesday in a California hospital.
He was born in Oakland, California, and lived in Benicia, California, for the past seven years. He previously lived for many years in Seattle, Washington, and Port Angeles, Washington.
Charles worked as a merchant seaman for nearly 50 years, sailing to most ports in North America, South America, the South Pacific and the Far East.
Charles served in the Merchant Marine during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and was recognized as a veteran in 1989. Charles was a proud member of the Sailors Union of the Pacific.
He greatly enjoyed life, including travel, sports, his church and his grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his sister, Martha Allison of Port Angeles; by his children, John Thomas Taylor of Kent, Diane Saunders of Kent, Charles Arthur Swanson of Auburn, and Elaine Goldie of Benicia, California; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at the South County Senior Center (425-774-5555) in Edmonds, Washington, on April 10, 2004, at 11 a.m.
California arrangements are under the direction of Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia, Calif.
