Michael Jerimiah Calabrese
Aug. 25, 1948 -- May 21, 2004
Port Angeles resident Michael Jerimiah Calabrese died in Crestwood Convalescent Center at age 55.
He was born in Jersey City, N.J., to Vincent Felix and Eleanor Olympia (Calicchio) Calabrese.
Mr. Calabrese was a master painter. Before coming to Port Angeles, he lived in Iselin, N.J.; Ridgefield, Conn.; Garden Grove, Calif.; Mount Vernon and Burlington.
He enjoyed photography, music, cinema, reading, nature, birding, Italian cooking and Bible reading.
Mr. Calabrese was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.
He is survived by brother Joe Bembnowski of Port Angeles and sisters Eleanor Joy Schwank of Matagorda, Texas, and Laura Fox of Perth Amboy, N.J.
Services: Today, May 26, 7 p.m., memorial in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1714 N St., Port Angeles. Joe Bembnowski will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Lucien A. Caro II
April 28, 1919 -- May 7, 2004
Lucien A. Caro II died in his Sequim home of lung cancer. He was 85.
Born in Louisiana to Lucien A. Sr. and Louise (Seicshnaydre) Caro, he attended a trade school for welders after his high school graduation.
During World War II, in 1943-46, Mr. Caro was a staff sergeant with the Army's 86th Infantry Division in the European and Pacific theaters.
He married
Virginia L. Eide in Kenai, Alaska, on Feb. 24, 1957.
Mr. Caro was a businessman and contractor in Louisiana and Alaska before retiring in 1972.
He spent 11 years on Bainbridge Island, then moved to the North Olympic Peninsula in 1984.
In addition to reading, Mr. Caro enjoyed woodworking and was known for making children's rocking horses. He was also a gardener who excelled at growing sweet peas.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Sequim, the North Olympic Fruit Club and Holy Rollers RV Club.
Mr. Caro's survivors include his wife; sons Nick Miller of Kenai, Alaska, Terry Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, and Lucien A. Caro III of Bainbridge Island; daughters Kathi Reynolds of Fairbanks, Alaska, Merri Gascon of Breaux Bridge, La., and Beth Feller of Washington; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Services: Saturday, May 29, 2 p.m., memorial and reception in Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Gisela Taber will officiate. There was cremation.
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon Gene Leckman
Nov. 8, 1922 -- May 10, 2004
Vernon Gene Leckman, an architectural designer who transformed a bowling alley into an expansive new home for the Food Co-op in Port Townsend, died at Swedish Hospital in Seattle of complications following a heart attack. He was 81.
``They checked on him at 4 in the morning, and he was listening to the BBC as usual, " said Mr. Leckman's daughter, Lise Rodriguez. ``When they checked on him at 5, he was gone."
Mr. Leckman, who was born near Walla, Walla, moved to Port Townsend from California six years ago after a career designing restaurants, urban villages and shopping centers in the United States, Europe and Asia.
``As he put it, he was moving home, " Rodriguez said of her father's decision to return to Washington state.
Rodriguez lives in Beaufort, S.C., where her father was a design consultant for Sea Pines Corp. on Hilton Head. When she was growing up, the family lived in Switzerland while her father designed a European restaurant chain.
Mr. Leckman, who attended college after a tour in the Coast Guard, was largely self-taught, Rodriguez said.
In addition to housing clusters and shopping centers, Mr. Leckman designed the restaurant in front of Los Angeles International Airport, an amusement park in Japan and the Long Beach, Calif., arena, Rodriguez said.
Mr. Leckman is survived by his daughter; sons Britt Leckman of Alexandria, Va., and Tad Leckman of San Francisco; and four grandchildren. He was separated from his wife, Marilyn Leckman, who lives in Long Beach.
Services: As his request, none. The remains were cremated and sent to his daughter.
James Russell Manes

Donald A. McNutt
Sept. 16, 1959 -- May 23, 2004
Donald A. McNutt of Quilcene died of injuries received in a motorcycle crash at Brinnon. He was 44.
He was born in Burien to Donald J. and Carolyn J. (Mayson) McNutt and completed high school in Tracy, Calif.
Mr. McNutt worked in the fields of carpentry and fire protection.
In addition to motorcycles and wood art, he enjoyed automobile restoration, family history, drawing and gardening.
He is survived by his father of Quilcene; mother and stepfather Carolyn and George Butler of Brinnon; and sisters Valerie J. Messier of Mason County, Cheryl A. Gaikowki of Port Townsend and Janice M. Norris Dodaro of Brinnon.
Services: Friday, May 28, 2-6 p.m., visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend.
Funeral on Saturday, May 29, 2 p.m., funeral in Brinnon Community Church, 52 Church Road, with burial following in Brinnon cemetery.
SHIRLEY L. RICHARDSON
Shirley L. Richardson died on May 12, 2004, at Crestwood Care Center in Port Angeles.
Born to Howard and Gladys (Stevens) Klein on May 11, 1926, in Seattle and raised in the north end in the Green Lake area, she attended Lincoln High School.
Shirley was distinguished as the second female lifeguard in Seattle, working Green Lake and Golden Gardens.
She was a dedicated snowbird between Clallam Bay and Sequim.
Shirley was married
to Daly Richardson on April 26, 1961, in Kenmore, Wash., by a Justice of the Peace (and a parrot).
She was a member of Lynnwood Eagles Auxiliary, Sequim Lady Elks, and a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary and CCFPD No. 3 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Daly, son Patrick and Patrick's fiancee, Vella, stepdaughter Linda Sanders and her husband, Eddie, of Burbank, Calif., sister Pat Joseph and husband John of Brier, Wash., five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and three cats, Hello Dolly, Good Golly Miss Molly and Bud Lite.
Predeceased by parents and son, Timothy.

Eleanore `Maxine' Eskridge
June 7, 1916 -- June 13, 2004
Eleanore ``Maxine" Eskridge died in Sherwood Assisted Living in Sequim. She was 88.
She was born to Fredrick and Nora Belle (Jones) Kleinhammer in Medford, Ore.
She married
Ernest Leonard Lingren in Medford on Oct. 22, 1932. He died March 25, 1969.
Her second marriage, to Harry Earl Eskridge, ended with his death in 1976.
Mrs. Eskridge taught primary-age children at her place of worship, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She enjoyed woodworking, ceramics, gardening and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Eskridge is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Ernest Lee and Merrilee Lingren of Sequim; Donald Gene and Pauline Lingren of Medford, Ore.; and Marshall LeeRoy and Linda Lingren of Jamul, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Colleda Dee and Mark Rohring of Okinawa, Japan; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services: Today, June 16, 2-5 p.m., visitation in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles.
Funeral on Thursday, 1 p.m., in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 591 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Bishop Chris King will officiate. Burial will be in Eagle Point National cemetery, Medford, Ore.
Helen Gatchet

Helen Gatchet died in Sequim at age 84.

Tamela J. McBride
Sept. 9, 1959 -- June 12, 2004
Tamela J. McBride died of cancer in her Sequim home at age 44.
Services: Saturday, June 19, 2 p.m., service of remembrance at 151 W. Maple St., Sequim. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Gilbert John Mueller
Nov. 1, 1913 -- June 12, 2004
Former Diamond Point resident Gilbert John Mueller died in Ridgemont Terrace Care Center, Port Orchard, at age 90.
He was born in Calio, N.D., to George and Ana (Gartner) Mueller.
On Nov. 9, 1936, he married
Mary Crisman in Maple Lake, Minn.
Mr. Mueller worked for Puget Power from 1942 to 1978 in locations including Port Townsend.
After his wife's death on Jan. 9, 2003, he moved to Port Orchard.
Mr. Mueller enjoyed fishing and won the Port Townsend Derby in 1953 and placed 10th in the Port Angeles Derby in 1972.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim.
Mr. Mueller is survived by daughter and son-in-law Jeannette and John Bruil of Sequim and daughter Joyce Andrae of Port Orchard; sister-in-law Agnes Guimono of New Hope, N.M.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy and Berton Johnson and Florence and Ernest Pribyl.
Services: Friday, June 11, noon, funeral Mass and reception in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. Inurnment at Sequim View cemetery will be at 2:45 p.m.
Wayne Schmidt
July 29, 1939 -- June 13, 2004
Former Port Angeles resident Wayne Schmidt, 64, died in Harrison Hospital, Bremerton, of lung disease.
He was born in Petersburg, N.D., to Theodore G. and Hulda (Brueckner) Schmidt.
He graduated from Port Angeles High School with the class of 1957, then served in the Navy in 1957-60.
On April 4, 1964, he married
Beth A. Stuart in Bremerton.
Mr. Schmidt retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard 1993.
His survivors include his wife of Bremerton; daughters and sons-in-law Lori A. and Steve Woodward and Carrie M. and Ron Jenkins, all of Bremerton; mother and sisters Lorna Abbs, Lillian Holttum and Marcy Hoglund, all of Port Angeles; brother Ted Schmidt of Allyn; sister-in-law Shirley Schmidt of Sublimity, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother Les Schmidt.
Services: Saturday, June 19, 11 a.m., memorial in Lincoln Avenue Bible Church, Bremerton. Lewis Funeral Chapel of Bremerton is in charge of arrangements.
