Violet May Johnson
June 12, 1917 -- June 6, 2004
Former Port Angeles resident Violet May Johnson, 86, died in her Sunny Valley, Ore., home at age 86.
She was born in Mill City, Ore., to Matthias and Mary Ellen (Foley) Carter.
She married
Maxwell Duvall Johnson in Vallejo, Calif., on May 19, 1946.
She lived in Port Angeles from 1971 to 1981.
In addition to her husband, survivors include son Carter Duvall Johnson of Littleton, Colo.; daughters Marjorie Tedrow of Bellevue and Carmen Warren of Sunny Valley, Ore.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, June 12, 10:30 a.m., memorial at Wolf Creek Alliance Community Church, Wolf Creek, Ore. Southern Oregon Cremation Services Inc., is in charge of burial.

Agnes Ann Taylor
March 3, 1934 -- June 7, 2004
Agnes Ann Taylor died in Jefferson General Hospital, Port Townsend, at age 70.
Services: Saturday, June 12, 1 p.m., graveside service in Laurel Grove cemetery, Port Townsend. Kosec Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Paul Lavern Woodside
Aug. 12, 1917 -- June 3, 2004
Paul Lavern Woodside died in his Port Angeles home at age 86.
Services: June 26, 10 a.m., memorial in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles.
Kenneth L. Chace Sr.
Dec. 7, 1914 -- June 3, 2004
Sequim resident Kenneth L. Chace Sr. died at age 89.
He was born in Macidon, N.Y., to Fred and Bessie (Yeoman) Chace.
He married
Rose DeCarlo in Fairmont, W.Va., on July 19, 1943.
Mr. Chace worked in the Maryland dry dock during World War II before enlisting with the Navy in 1944.
While on active duty, he moved his family to Bremerton. In 1954, the Chaces relocated to Sequim.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, one daughter, two sisters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Chace was preceded in death by one daughter.
Services: At his request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.
JERRY ALLEN ECHTERNKAMP
Jerry Allen Echternkamp, 62, of Litchfield Park, Arizona, passed away June 2, 2004, in Litchfield Park.
Jerry was born in Port Angeles on March 21, 1942, to Arthur and Elizabeth Echternkamp.
Jerry was raised in Sequim and attended and graduated from Sequim High School in 1960.
He attended Electronics School at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. Jerry served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years, serving in both Alaska and Virginia.
While serving, he met and married
June Murray on July 13, 1968. A son was given to the couple in 1971 named Jerry Allen Echternkamp II.
Jerry was employed in the aerospace industry for over 30 years, where he traveled to many areas of the world, including Iran and England and most recently worked for Lockheed Martin in Goodyear, Arizona.
His hobbies included woodworking, golf, building fishing rods, fishing and pen and ink artistry. Jerry moved to Goodyear, Arizona, in 2002.
Jerry is survived by his wife, June; son Jerry Allen Echternkamp II of Arizona; brother Cliff Echternkamp of Port Angeles; sister Pamela Gail Eve of Naches, Washington; brothers-in-law Bill Murray of Bellingham and Jim Murray of Port Townsend; a half-sister, Kim Jackson of Everett, and many friends.
A Celebration of Life was held Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in the Palm Room at the Eagles Nest Pebble Creek Country Club, Goodyear, Arizona, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Family and friends may make memorial contributions to their favorite charity.

BETTY JANE POWELL
Mrs. Betty Jane Powell, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 5, 2004, in Port Angeles.
She was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on April 28, 1917, to James Briggs Bately and Clare Augusta Nobis Bately.
Betty grew up in Sebastopol, Calif., where she graduated from Analy High School.
While attending San Jose State College, she met Kenneth L. Powell. They were married
in 1937 and moved to Berkeley. In 1943, the family moved to the Oakland hills.
Betty's focus was on her two children's activities, and she served as choir mother, Cub Scout den mother and Blue Bird leader.
Betty later worked at the University of California and rose to the position of Supervising Cashier. She retired from the University in 1986 after 26 years of service.
Betty continued to live in Oakland until she moved to Port Angeles with her daughter and son-in-law in 2000. She lived at St. Andrew's Place prior to moving to Port Angeles Care Center.
During her life, she enjoyed ceramics, reading, gardening, writing poetry and playing the piano, but she enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren the most.
She was a member of St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Berkeley, Calif., Berkeley Women's City Club, Piedmont Arts and Crafts Guild, and, after moving to Washington, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Port Angeles.
She is survived by her daughter and son in law, Michaele and Casey Call of Sequim, and her daughter-in-law, Serena Powell of Canyon, Texas.
Her son, Gary, predeceased her on the same day six years earlier. Her sister, Dorothy Bately, and her former husband, Kenneth Powell, also predeceased her.
Her survivors also include seven grandchildren and their spouses: Dorothy and Larry Bernal of Paradise, Calif., James Powell, Carolyn Powell and Joel Norris, Eric Powell, all of Everett, Wash., Nancy and Mark McKinney of Canyon, Texas, Justin Call of Boulder, Colorado, and Christopher Call of Sacramento, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Bethany McKinney and Gary Norris.
The family is most appreciative of Annette Maybury, who served as Betty's special caregiver, and all the staff at the Port Angeles Care Center.
Betty will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
Visitation will be at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles on Saturday, June 12 at 1-3 p.m.
A funeral service will follow at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Port Angeles at 4:00 Saturday afternoon.
Memorial donations to PAARC Clinic, c/o St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, WA 98362 are suggested in lieu of flowers.
Sherry L. Morris
May 23, 1961 -- June 7, 2004
Homemaker Sherry L. Morris died in Port Angeles of heart failure at age 43.
She was born in Eugene, Ore., to Burton Clyde and Della Ann (Davie) Dewey.
In 1979, she graduated from Sequim High School.
On Sept. 27, 1980, she married
David S. Morris.
Mrs. Morris was a member of Olympic View Church of God in Sequim.
She enjoyed horseback riding, camping, fishing and hiking.
In addition to her husband and sons Robert S. Morris and Brandon D. Morris, all of Sequim, survivors include parents and sister Kathy Rygaard, all of Port Angeles, and sister Shannon Bible of Spanaway; and brother Donald Dewey of Sedro-Woolley.
Services: Thursday, June 10, at 1 p.m., memorial in Olympic View Church of God, 503 N. Brown St., Sequim. Pastor Dennis Ackley will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Joseph `R.J.' Whitman

Longtime Port Angeles resident Robert Joseph ``R.J." Whitman died at age 81.
Services: Friday, June 11, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., visitation in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles; Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m., funeral in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home with the Rev. John Maxwell officiating.
Abraham Flores
May 6, 2004 -- June 6, 2004
Infant Abraham Flores of Sequim died in Children's Hospital, Seattle, from cerebral infarction. He was one month old.
Born in Port Angeles to Rene and Sofia (Martinez) Flores, he is also survived by brothers William and Rene Flores Jr., both of Sequim; grandparents Pablo and Luisa Garcia Flores of Sequim and Vicente and Rosario Gonzales Martinez of Mexico; and great-grandfather Indalecio Flores of Mexico.
Services: Wednesday, June 9, 2 p.m., funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. The Rev. Thomas Beattie will preside.
After the graveside service in Sequim View cemetery, there will be a reception in the church. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Sherry Lenore Morris
May 23, 1961 -- June 7, 2004
Sherry Lenore Morris died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, at age 43.

VERA MARIE BROOKER
Vera Marie Brooker passed away on June 4, 2004 in Port Angeles after a long illness.
She was born on May 3, 1921, to Herbert William and Ila Aurora (Wilson) Bosch in Troutdale, Oregon. She was the middle child of seven siblings.
The family moved to Washington in 1930 and settled on Lopez Island, where she spent her school years.
She married
Walter Brooker on June 21, 1941, and moved to Port Angeles the following year. They built the house they lived in for almost 60 years. Walter passed away in 1996.
She was very dedicated to her family and was a fantastic cook. She hosted many dinners, and you could count on the food to be plentiful and delicious.
She was active in the Fairview Grange, holding several offices over the years. She won ribbons for sewing and baking, including first place in State Grange baking contests twice for sweet rolls.
Three brothers preceded her in death, Lester, William and Eugene Bosch.
She is survived by sisters Gracia Gorham and Alethea McCauley, as well as brother Eldon Bosch. She leaves three children, James of Port Angeles, William of Spokane and JoAnne Fronda of Bothel. She also has eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
No services will be held, at her request, but a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Phillip L. Egnew
Feb. 22, 1934 -- May 3, 2004
Former Port Angeles resident Phillip L. Egnew died in Eugene, Ore., of lung cancer at age 70.
Mr. Egnew was born in Springfield, Ill. to Russell and Imogene Tyson Egnew.
He married
Nadine L. Springer-Sexton in Raymond in June 1955.
He entered the U.S. Air Force in December 1951 and retired in 1972.
In September 1973, he joined the Clallam County Sheriff's Department as a dispatcher, later becoming an office deputy. He retired in 1985.
Survivors include his wife of Eugene, Ore.; sons Harold of Port Angeles and Richard of Plainview, Tex.; daughters Renee Egnew of Springfield, Ore., Phyllis Summers of Oak Harbor, and Karla Howe of Joyce; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Robert W. Egnew in 1974, granddaughter R. Christine in 1977, and grandson Phillip N. Egnew in 2001.
Services: A memorial service will be held later.
