Harold Orval Kautz
Aug. 23, 1913 -- July 17, 2004
Sequim resident Harold Orval Kautz died of cancer in Port Angeles at age 90.
He was born in Hayfield, Minn., to Fred Carl and Mary (Stave) Kautz.
He married
Lula Marie Millard in Cannon Falls, Minn., on Sept. 23, 1936. She died in 1985.
Mr. Kautz was a Merchant Marine, serving as a oiler and junior engineer, from 1944 to 1957.
From 1946 until 1992, he lived in Port Angeles, where he was a 12-year shareholder with Peninsula Plywood.
In his younger years, Mr. Kautz was an avid golfer.
He belonged to the American Legion, Eagles and Elks.
Survivors include daughter Joyce Tatom of Springfield, Ore.; brothers Floyd Kautz of Port Angeles, Robert Kautz of Henderson, Nev., and Frederick Kautz of Cannon Falls, Minn.; sisters Dorothy Sele of Port Angeles, Mildred Sauer of Boise, Idaho, Viola Roy of St. Paul, Minn., and Joan Raines of Moose Lake, Minn.; two grandchildren three great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, brothers Ralph Kautz and Leonard Kautz preceded him in death.
Services: Private graveside service will be held under the direction of Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel with cremains interred at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

Anita E. Anticevich
July 21, 1929 -- July 13, 2004
Port Angeles resident Anita E. Anticevich died at age 74.
She was born to Jodie F. and Imogene (Perry) McLaughlin in Wheat Ridge, Colo., where she married
Steve E. Anticevich Jr. in June 1964,
Mrs. Anticevich is survived by son Joe of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Nikki and Michael Millican of Bremerton; brother Dan McLaughlin of Loveland, Colo.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her husband died in November 1977.
Services: Saturday, July 24, 1 p.m., celebration of life in the Masonic Temple at Seventh and Lincoln streets, Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Margaret Reiling Freeman
Feb. 10, 1925 -- July 21, 2004
Margaret Reiling Freeman died in Port Ludlow at age 79,
She was born in Spokane to George J. and Mary A. (Wilson) Reiling.
She married
Theodore Kenny Freeman in Seattle. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Freeman moved from Seattle to Port Ludlow 18 years ago.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Lynne of California; Thomas and Carolyn of Mercer Island; David and Gina of Hattisburg, Miss.; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Van Wilson of Salt Lake City; and eight grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, her sister, Betty Nett, preceded her in death.
Services: None. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge.
Robert L. French
Oct. 24, 1935 -- July 20, 2004
Brinnon resident Robert L. French died in Harrison Memorial Hospital, Bremerton, of heart failure at age 68.
He was born in Augusta, Ark., to Warnie Lee and Ruth (Bryant) French.
After growing up in the South and on Bainbridge Island, Mr. French worked as a logger for 45 years.
He married
Clair Woolworth in Winslow on Sept. 24, 1955.
In addition to hunting and fishing, Mr. French enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially storytelling and coaching his grandkids.
Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Donita French and daughter-in-law Katy French, all of Quilcene; daughter and son-in-law Katy and Jack Suiter of Ketchikan, Alaska; mother of Winslow; brothers and sisters-in-law Don and Rana French of Bainbridge Island and Butch and Mary French of Republic; brother Kenny French of Olympia; sister Janette Perrett of Covington; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sons Mike French and Andy French.
Services: Saturday, July 24, 10:30 a.m., funeral in the Quilcene High School multi-purpose room. Les Drake will officiate.
Open house at the home of Tom French's Snow Creek Farm, 1350 Snow Creek Road, Quilcene, will follow the service. Burial will be in Brinnon cemetery.

Leon W. Gee
Aug. 7, 1926 -- July 19, 2004
Sequim resident Leon W. Gee died in Swedish Hospital, Seattle, of myocardial infarction at age 77.
He was born in Spiro, Okla., to Willis Allen and Edith Virginia (Starrett) Gee.
During World War II, Mr. Gee was in the Navy and served aboard the USS Wasp.
He married
Patricia Pitts in Yuma, Ariz., on Oct. 30, 1948.
Mr. Gee, who moved to Sequim in 1963, was employed by Thomas Builders for more than 30 years.
He was instrumental in building Gardiner Country Chapel. His other interests focused on the family, farm, including its chickens, and books.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons Mark Allen Gee of Tacoma and Steven Eugene Gee of Lacy; brother Wilburn R. Gee of Clovis, Calif.; brother Stanley C. Gee and sisters Georgia R. Carroll and Dorothy L. Kurth, all of Avon Park, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services: Friday, July 23, 2 p.m., funeral in Gardiner Country Chapel, Highway 101, Gardiner. Pastor John Tollefson will officiate. Reception in Gardiner Country Chapel will follow graveside services in Gardiner cemetery. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Norman LeRoy Holttum
May 18, 1932 -- July 17, 2004
Port Angeles resident Norman LeRoy Holttum died of cancer in Olympic Medical Center at age 72.
Born in Brief to John Ernest Geoffrey and Berniece Grace Houghton (Wood) Holttum, he graduated from West Seattle High School in 1950.
He served with the Air Force in Germany and France in 1950-54.
Mr. Holttum, who was a salesman, lived in Burien, Anchorage, Alaska; Aberdeen; and Salem, Ore., before moving to Port Angeles.
He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing, as well as breeding and showing Siamese cats and spending time with his grandchildren.
In 1956, he married
Venita Thomas; they divorced in 1980.
Mr. Holttum married
Lillian Schmidt on Jan. 14, 1989, in Reno, Nev.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law John and Stephanie Holttum of Olympia and Matthew and Kim Holttum of Lynnwood; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law Jay and Linda Hagaman and Dennis and Rachel Hagaman, all of Port Angeles, and Carl and Nancy Hagaman of Everett; brother and sister-in-law Eugene and Jan Holttum, and brother and companion Bob Wood and Bev, all of the Seattle area; sister and brother-in-law Diana and David Woeck; sister Karen Wood; and 10 grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, July 31, 1-5 p.m., celebration of life in the Eagles Annex, 110 S. Penn St., Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Wallace Little
May 26, 1914 -- July 19, 2004
James Wallace Little died in Port Angeles Care Center at age 90.
Born in Kent, he was the son of Timothy Little.
During World War II, in 1941-45, he served in the Army as a sergeant with the 41st Sunrise Division, 163rd Infantry Regiment.
He married
Marjorie Lorraine Johnston in Port Angeles in 1945.
Mr. Little was a member of the Carpenters Union and was foreman for DelGuzzi Construction in Port Angeles, where he made his home on 12th Street for 50 years.
In addition to being a fisherman and gardener, he enjoyed playing poker.
Survivors include his wife; sister Anne Collins of San Francisco; and two grandchildren.
Services: Today, July 22, 2 p.m., memorial in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
WOODROW W. HANSON
Woodrow W. Hanson passed away on July 17, 2004, in Bellevue, Washington, at the age of 86.
Woody was born on May 11, 1918, in Vader, Washington. He was the 10th child in a family of 11.
Woody was a veteran of World War II and retired from the Seattle Fire Department after 25 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Doris; by his brother Carl, by his children Brian (wife Judy), Stephen (wife Yvonne), Douglas (wife Colleen), stepdaughter Barbara (husband Tom), and stepson Richard (wife Robbie); eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
There will be a private family graveside service at Forest Lawn cemetery, West Seattle.
Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (800-272-3900, www.alz.org).

DEAN WARREN AMDAL
July 7, 1926-July 1, 2004
Our beloved Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa peacefully passed from this life, leaving his family and many friends with fond memories of the courageous and great man he was and always will be in our hearts.
Among the many who will miss his physical presence are: his wife, Ruth; son Mark, wife Char and grandson Ben Amdal; daughter Laurel, husband Tom and grandson Tejay Haller; daughter Wendy Amdal; daughter Dana, husband Ken Spadafora, granddaughter Megan, newly born great-grandson Jayden and granddaughter Carla Mills; Ruth's children who took Dean's name, daughter Andi Amdal and partner Cloud Anderson; son John, wife Angie, granddaughters Mairin and Grace Amdal; stepchildren Sherie Mayo, Laurie Hall and Eric Morrow, 17 step-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
Born in Everett, Washington, Dean served in World War II, was a Sons of Norway member, was Past Commodore of the Port Ludlow Yacht Club, and past member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
He started his own construction business at age 51, was past president of Kitsap Chapter of Associated General Contractors, served as expert witness in construction arbitration cases, excelled in sail racing and, at age 64, embarked with wife Ruth on a 4½-year trip around the Pacific Ocean in their 40-foot ketch.
Stricken by a stroke, he courageously fought the crippling disability for 9 years, then chose to fight no more.
A celebration of Dean's life was held on the beach on the date of his birth.
SANDRA ELAINE BETTING
``Sam, " to her Port Angeles friends, was born March 31, 1946, in Richmond, California, and passed away July 18, 2004.
Sam was born to Kenneth and Genevieve Pike, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Clay Betting; son Ryan Betting of Seattle; daughter Rana Betting of Oakland, Calif.; sisters Sharon Adams and Susan Stanton; sister-in-law Carol Stuber; nephew Michael Stanton and his wife, Heather; niece Nicole Stuber and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sam graduated from Richmond Union High School in 1964 and worked for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. in Oakland, Calif., until 1970.
Sam and Clay were married
June 6, 1969, in Oakland, Calif., and later moved the family to Washington state.
The family moved to Port Angeles in 1979 to found and operate Westco Marine Services, a marine shipping company.
Sam especially enjoyed her work with tugboat companies and the log ships that loaded in Port Angeles.
In earlier times, Sam enjoyed camping and picnics, Friday night at the Elks, card playing, ``The Price is Right" show and romance novels, and always enjoyed a good laugh with friends.
After 20 years in Port Angeles, Sam and Clay moved to Longbranch, Washington, where Sam enjoyed the natural serenity and the wildlife that greeted her daily. The black bear family that came visiting for a bagel or cake and the family pets will all miss the ``food lady."
Mother, wife, sister and friend, she was our foundation and will always be loved.
Please come and join the family in her celebration of life at the Port Angeles Yacht Club on Friday, July 23, at 2 p.m.
