Bonita M. Nekuda

Bonita M. Nekuda died in Port Angeles at the age of 73.
She was born in Talmadge, Neb., to Lloyd and Helen (Badberg) Nelson.
She married
Robert E. Nekuda in Walla Walla on Jan. 23, 1950.
The Nekudas moved from Federal Way to Agnew in 1995. She enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and camping.
Survivors include her husband in Agnew; a son, James M. Nekuda of Bothell; and a brother, Conrad Nelson of Addy.
Services: At her request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Heidi Lynn Richmond
March 14, 1973 -- Aug. 31, 2004
Port Angeles resident Heidi Lynn Richmond drowned at the age of 31.
She was born in Pendleton, Ore., to Everett and Emily Richmond.
After graduating from high school in 1992, she worked as a caregiver, nanny and housekeeper among other occupations. She attended Peninsula College in 2003.
Survivors include her mother of Forks; sisters Cindy Richmond of White Plains, N.Y., and Janis Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 4, 11 a.m., celebration of life at Forks Elks Lodge, 941 Merchant Road. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Layton Keller Hurst

Layton Keller Hurst died at his home in Sequim. He was 85.
He was born in Leon, Iowa, to Louis Edward and Fern Alice (Pryor) Hurst.

Port Angeles resident Taryn Sue Schlaffman died at the age of 49.

Doris Shannon Schultz
Oct. 8, 1917 -- Aug. 30, 2004
Port Ludlow resident Doris Shannon Schultz died of cancer at her Beaver Valley home. She was 86.
She was born in Los Angeles to Samuel Carpenter and Clara Leonore (Bullock) MacMurray.
She married
Norman West Schultz in Riverside, Calif., on Sept. 26, 1941.
Mrs. Schultz was a Navy WAVE, serving as a storekeeper in the 13th Naval District in Seattle from 1943 to 1945.
The Schultzes moved often because of his work with the Mobil Oil Corp. They retired to Port Townsend to be near their children in 1988.
Mrs. Schultz enjoyed working crossword puzzles -- her mother was one of the first composers of puzzles in the 20th century.
She was also known for her love of a good latté, gardening and reading.
Survivors include her husband at home; daughter Karen Lee Orr of Eugene, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Kathleen Ann and David Bradbury of Port Ludlow; half-brother David MacMurray of Bogotá, Colombia; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Services: A private memorial will be held later. Kosec Funeral Home of Port Townsend is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Any veterans organization. The family requests no flowers.
VERA MARIE BOWER
In loving memory of Vera Marie Bower, who was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her, and who went to be with the Lord on August 30, 2004.
Vera was born on October 14, 1913, in Traverse City, Michigan, and resided in the Sequim, Washington, area for most of her life prior to relocating to Olympia to be near her daughters, Kay (Bruce) Randall and Phyllis Bower.
Vera was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Bower, and by her husband, Walter Bower, to whom she was married
for over 60 years.
Vera is not only survived by her daughters, but also by a brother, Warner; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
We would like to share with others what a wonderful, unique person and inspiration Vera was to her family, friends, and all who knew her.
Vera -- ``steady and true." She was truly a gift from the Lord.
Vera requested no service; therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or to Crohn's Foundation.
ANNA EVELYN (AASTEN) PRENTICE
Anna Evelyn (Aasten) Prentice was born in Seattle, April 14, 1918. She passed away August 28, 2004, at Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center in Sequim peacefully in her sleep at the age of 86.
She grew up in Seattle in the Capitol Hill area of Madison Street and moved to Queen Anne and Thomas, where her parents owned the grocery store (now a post office). She graduated from Queen Anne High School.
She was married
in 1940 to Hugh Prentice, and lived at 13th and Denny for the next 64 years.
She loved her job at J.C. Penney's for 25 years. When our father passed on in 1985, she had her thrifty shop at her homesite.
Over the years, she became known as ``Queen Anne" by most of the community on Capitol Hill. Wonderful friends and their pets often stopped by to visit as she sat on her porch and in her little shop.
She is survived by one sister, Molly Aasten of Seattle; three daughters, Darlene Morgison of Port Angeles, Karen Prentice of Gainesville, Florida, and Sharen Schaefer of Newcastle, Washington; 17 grandchildren, 19 great grandkids and 3 great-great grandkids.
The family gives special thanks and gratitude to Robert Schmidt for being there throughout the years, for keeping her yard properly maintained, running errands and getting her help when needed.
A true friend and renter, he was like a son to our mother as they became very close.
Thank you again, Robert, from the family.
She was laid to rest at the Evergreen-Washelli cemetery in Seattle.
Always loved -- always remembered.
Jane Roddy Booth
Aug. 3, 1911 -- Aug. 23, 2004
Jane Roddy Booth of Port Ludlow died of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 93.
She was born in Emmitsburg, Md., to Hugh Augustus and Rose (Weaver) Roddy.
She graduated from St. John's High School in Frederick, Md., in 1928, and from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore, in 1932.
She taught high school Latin and social studies from 1932 to 1940.
She married
Sherman K. Booth in Frederick, Md., on July 13, 1940.
The couple lived in Arlington and Falls Church, Va., before moving to Port Ludlow in 2002.
While in college, Mrs. Roddy was the pianist for the glee club, and she was an active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Arlington.
Survivors include her husband in Port Ludlow; son and daughter-in-law John and Sharon Booth of Monkton, Md.; daughter and son-in-law Joanne and Keith McConnell of Port Ludlow; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Friday, Sept. 3, 11 a.m., funeral service, 114 Libby Court, Port Ludlow. Committal will be in Forest Hill cemetery, Swansonville.
On Saturday, Sept. 4, the rosary will be recited at 8:40 a.m. and Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend.

Matthew Page Lomax
June 14, 1976 -- Aug. 26, 2004
Matthew Page Lomax died in Bremerton at the age of 28.
He was born in Port Angeles to Mark Page and Laurel-Lea Frances (Gagnon) Lomax.
Survivors include his parents of Port Angeles, grandparents Mae M. Gagnon and Betty G. Lomax of Port Angeles, and sister and brother-in-law Shellea M. and Dan Wolfe of Port Angeles.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 18, 2 p.m., memorial at Fairview Bible Church, 385 O'Brien Road, Port Angeles. Reception follows in church. Pastor Jack Clapp will officiate. Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Irene D. Merrell
July 25, 1921 -- Aug. 27, 2004
Irene D. Merrell of Sequim died of congestive heart failure at the age of 83.
She was born in Adrian, Mich., to Vern I. and Martha M. (Terry) Dewey and attended both high school and college in Phoenix, Ariz.
She worked in the public works department of the 11th Naval District in San Diego.
She married
John C. Merrell Jr. on Sept. 9, 1961, in San Diego.
Mrs. Merrell lived in San Diego, Santa Ana and San Francisco, Calif., before moving to Sequim 30 years ago.
She was a member of the Sequim Presbyterian Church, the Sequim Scribes and several other calligraphy organizations, and Chapter HM, P.E.O. in Sequim. She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially sewing and calligraphy, and she liked to travel.
She is survived by her husband in Sequim.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 4, 1 p.m., memorial service in Sequim Presbyterian Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.

MARILYN DONNA STONE
Marilyn Donna Stone, age 73, longtime former Coupeville resident, passed away at Everett Rehabilitation and Care Center on Thursday, August 26, 2004, following a courageous battle with vascular disease.
Mrs. Stone was born in Menominee, Wisconsin, on April 3, 1931, to Hugh Whinnery and Muriel (Rossiter) Whinnery. She lived in Wisconsin and Montana before moving to Spokane, Washington, with her family.
Marilyn had her mother as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in Deborgia, Montana. She graduated from West Valley High School in Spokane in 1949.
Following graduation, she was employed as a bank teller.
On August 4, 1950, Marilyn married
Edward Henry Stone Jr. in Spokane. They moved to Bremerton in 1957, then settled in Coupeville in 1958.
Marilyn was a homemaker until the early 1970s, at which time she went to work as a waitress at the Tyee Restaurant in Coupeville to help pay college expenses for her children. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at the restaurant, socializing with regular customers and co-workers.
Favorite hobbies of Marilyn included talking with friends, water aerobics, trips to the casino and bowling. An avid bowler, Marilyn rolled a 647 series in 1970, coming within 11 points of the Ebey Bowl record.
She enjoyed enthusiastically cheering for her children and grandchildren in their many sporting events. Marilyn was also a Seattle Mariners fan. Edgar Martinez was her favorite player.
In the early '80s, Marilyn and Ed purchased a motor home and became ``snowbirds." They enjoyed traveling throughout the Western United States and Canada. They began spending the winter months in Yuma, Arizona, then moved on to Desert Hot Springs, California, from 1988 through 1995.
Marilyn will be remembered as a passionate person, loving mother and grandmother with iron will and strength. She was a fighter! She will be dearly missed and loved forever.
The family expresses its appreciation to the staffs of Everett Rehabilitation and Care Center and Providence Hospice of Snohomish County for their support, compassion and loving care.
Her husband, Edward, to whom she was married
for 52 years, preceded Marilyn in death in 2002.
She is survived by her three children, Jeff Stone and wife Vicky of Oak Harbor; Randy Stone and wife Patti of Port Angeles; and Lori Ley and husband Terry of Bothell; five grandchildren, Brannon Stone of Bellingham, Garrett Stone of Seattle, Monica Stone of Oak Harbor and Makenzie and Cameron Ley, both of Bothell.
A private family graveside service will be at Sunnyside cemetery.
A Memorial Service for family and friends will be Sunday, September 5, 2004, at 4 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor, Pastor Dave Veach officiating.
