Margaret Braithwaite
Dec. 25, 1915 -- Sept. 6, 2004
Margaret Braithwaite died in her Forks home at age 88.
She was born in Bellingham to William and Alice (Cress) Colling.
On July 3, 1932, she married
Thomas Braithwaite.
Mrs. Braithwaite owned a bookkeeping business and was a member of Eastern Star.
Her survivors include sons Richard and Roger Braithwaite, both of Forks; daughters J. Birdean Nash of Ephrata and K. Karen Dewey of Sequim; and sisters Lorraine Hunley of Bellingham and Jacqualine Davis of Marysville.
Her husband died Jan. 9, 1973.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., visitation in Mount Olympus Funeral Home, 481 Calawah Way, Forks; Saturday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m., graveside service in Forks cemetery. Bob Schwartz will officiate.

Dewey W. Bright
Sept. 8, 1938 -- Sept. 2, 2004
Sequim resident Dewey W. Bright died in Providence Hospital, Seattle, at age 65, of heart failure.
He was born in Billings, Mont., to William E. and Ethel B. (Palin) Bright
He served with the Navy from 1956 to 1976, then retired as a hull technician chief petty officer.
In addition to military schools, Mr. Bright attended the criminal justice academy and, after his service career, was employed by the Department of Corrections at Clallam Bay Corrections Center.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and nature photography and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
On June 3, 1966, Mr. Bright married
Marilyn L. Grasse in Coronado, Calif.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons Leonard Bright of Port Gamble and Randy Bright of Port Angeles; daughter Margaret ``Peggy" Bright of Detroit; brother and sister-in-law Norman and Virginia Bright of Clallam Bay; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers William and James Bright and sister Viola Woodruff.
Services: Oct. 2 at 2 p.m., memorial in the Masonic Temple, 622 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles. Olympic Cremation Association is in charge.

Carroll `Doug' Carter Jr.
Feb. 13, 1928 -- Sept. 3, 2004
Carroll ``Doug" Carter Jr. passed away in his Quilcene home at age 76. He was a heavy smoker who had emphysema and died from lung cancer.
Born in Seattle to former King County clerk and treasurer Carroll D. Carter and his wife, the former Catherine Hardin, he graduated from Broadway High School then earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from San Francisco State College.
Mr. Carter attended Humbolt State College (Calif.) and University of Chattanooga (Tenn.) before starting a master's degree program at Idaho State University.
From 1946-49, he was on active duty with the Air Force, stationed at Ladd AFB in Fairbanks, Alaska.
He then pursued a career that included employment as a juvenile detention counselor in San Mateo and San Francisco counties, assistant superintendent of a ranch school for delinquent boys in Del Norte County and adult probation officer, Sonoma County, all of California; federal civil service counselor with two Idaho Job Corps centers and district manager in eastern Idaho with the state Department of Vocational Rehabilitation; and director of two large residential treatment centers for emotionally disturbed adolescents and young adults in Virginia and Texas.
In 1982, Mr. Carter founded Carter's Courier Service in Bellingham; in 1996, he sold the company to his son, Matthew, and moved to Quilcene, where he continued as a company employee until he retired at age 76.
He was an avid golfer and club champion at two courses. He also enjoyed chess, poker, crossword puzzles and crime novels and was a longtime collector of coffee grinders.
Mr. Carter was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the American Civil Liberties Union.
On June 4, 1955, he married
Colleen Sue Latimer in Reno, Nev.
Survivors include his wife of Quilcene and their son Matthew D. Carter of Bellingham, as well as sons from prior marriages, C.D. Carter III, Tom Nachand and Tom Christian; daughters Amanda L. Capehart of Tumwater and Margaret C. Carter of Portland, Ore.
Also brother Dr. Joel M. Carter, M.D., of Fernandima Beach, Fla.; sisters Susan C. May of Bellingham and Mary C. Fought of Woodside, Calif.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services: None. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, was in charge.

Martha A. Klinge
Dec. 1, 1913 -- Sept. 2, 2004
Former Port Angeles resident Martha A. Klinge died at age 90.
She was born in St. Paul Minn., to Otto and Augusta (Warner) Kersten and, at an early age, moved to Puyallup where she graduated high school.
Before retiring from the workforce, Mrs. Klinge, who married
and divorced, was secretary to city managers of Tacoma and of Port Angeles.
In Port Angeles, she attended Lighthouse Christian Center, where she was pianist for about 15 years. She was also on the board of the Humane Society and belonged to the Port Angeles Homemakers' and Christian Women's clubs.
Mrs. Klinge is survived by nieces and nephews JoAnne Linn-Cowans, Jack C. Linn Jr., Dwayne Werner, Sherril Werner, Kathy Bosc, Tom Lacrosse, David Kersten and Margaret Moline as well as numerous great- and great-great- nieces and nephews.
Services: At her request, none. Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, Tacoma, is in charge.
James Leander `Jimmy' Lillquist
Dec. 20, 1966 -- Sept. 5, 2004
James Leander ``Jimmy" Lillquist died in his Brinnon home at age 37.
He was born in Tacoma to Walter and Frances (Sigurdson) Lillquist.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 11, at noon in Calvary Lutheran Church, 7000 23rd St. NW, Ballard. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of cremation.

Richard Kirk Meyers
Dec. 6, 1953 -- Aug. 31, 2004
Sequim resident Richard Kirk Meyers was lost at sea at age 50.
He was born to Jacob Robert and Maria Gloria (Alvarez) Meyers in Salt Lake City where, on March 20, 1978, he married
Renae Rose in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple.
Mr. Meyers served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City from 1974 to 1976.
In 1979 he received a bachelor of science degree in biology from the University of Washington where he also received a doctor of dental surgery degree in the school of dentistry in June of 1983.
Mr. Meyers had a private practice in dentistry in Sequim from 1984 to 1998 and worked as a dentist for the Quileute tribe and Clallam Bay Corrections Center.
He had lived in Sequim for 21 years after having been raised in Bothell.
A member of Boy Scouts of America, he was Scoutmaster for eight years, spent many years in Cub Scouting, worked with youth in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church activities and enjoyed landscaping, gardening, flower arranging, decorating, fishing, wood working, writing and playing the saxophone.
Survivors include spouse and son Joel Meyers both of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Bethany R. and Ryan B. Weed of Orem, Utah; parents of Spokane; father-in-law Don Kuhlman of Sequim; brother and sister-in-law Gary R. and Debbie Meyers and sister and brother-in-law L. Kim and Paul Porter, all of Spokane; brother-in-law L. Jay Mitchell of Highland, Utah and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by sister Luann Mitchell.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 11, 2 p.m. memorial service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 591 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Bishop Chris King will officiate. The family will receive visitors following the memorial service in the Relief Society Room at the church. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Virgil Benton Snyder
Feb. 5, 1916 -- Sept. 6, 2004
Port Townsend resident Virgil Benton Snyder died in Tacoma at age 88.
He was born in Ralston to Ben and Bessie (Stratton) Snyder.
He was a farmer.
Mr. Snyder was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a former member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Ritzville where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Darlene and Jim Van Slyke and Jeanne and Frank Zepp; brother Lester Snyder; sister Pearl Bell; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
His wife, Helen, died in 1989.
Services: Monday, Sept. 13, graveside service in Ritzville Lutheran cemetery. Saturday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m., memorial in Grace Lutheran Church, 1120 Walker St., Port Townsend. Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, Tacoma, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard H. Dryke
Aug. 7, 1923 -- Aug. 22, 2004
Sequim resident Richard H. Dryke died in Lakewood at age 81 from heart problems and Alzheimer's disease.
He was born in Duluth, Minn., to Henry H. and Mary (Mulvahill) Dryke.
In high school, he lettered in football, basketball and track and field then attended University of Washington on a basketball scholarship. For 17 years he held a county record for the 440-yard run.
While serving in the Navy as a petty officer first class onboard the USS Nautilus, he earned the Navy Commendation Medal.
He was a logger and worked at Port Townsend Crown Zellarbach paper mill.
Mr. Dryke was a member of Submarine Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers, Sunnydell Gun Club and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, son and daughter-in-law Richard W. and Maria Dryke, daughter Marva D. Dryke and daughter and son-in-law Debra and Doug Cockburn, all of Sequim, as well as daughter Celia Dryke of Lincoln City; brother Chuck Dryke; sister Mary Pogue; and six grandchildren.
In 1989, he was preceded in death by twin brother Robert J. Dryke.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m., memorial in Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake St., Sequim. The Rev. Gisela Taber will officiate. A reception will follow the service. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Layton Keller Hurst
March 14, 1919 -- Aug. 27, 2004
Layton Keller Hurst died in his Sequim home from heart-related complications at age 85.
He was born the first of four children to Louis Edward and Fern Alice (Pryor) Hurst in Leon, Iowa
In 1941, Mr. Hurst graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
Journalism and radio, where he started as news director of station WSUI, Iowa City, Iowa, were of lifelong interest to him.
In 1941-42, before serving with the Army, Mr. Hurst was announcer and newscaster for station KBUR in Burlington, Iowa, a company to which he returned after the war as program director from 1945 to 1947.
While in the Army between 1943 in 1945, Mr. Hurst participated in the Battle of the Bulge. His tour of duty included training at Camp Hood, Texas, then serving as a line corporal with Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, Fourth Division in Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardenne.
His awards included three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
On May 2, 1954, in Indianapolis, he married
Ellen Joan Gunnell, of London, England.
From 1956-83, he concluded his communications career, with the American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he was program coordinator and branch director.
The Hursts retired to Sequim.
In addition to belonging to the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include sister Jean Nielsen of Sequim, sister and brother-in-law Joanna and George Nesheim of Richland; and 15 nephews and nieces.
His wife died May 12, 2003. He was also preceded in death by brother Louis.
Services: Sunday, Sept. 12, memorial recognition in the 9:30 a.m. service at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. Burial will be, beside his wife, in Arlington National cemetery at Arlington, Va.
