James D. Clutter
June 19, 1936 -- Oct. 21, 2004
James D. Clutter of Sequim died in his sleep at age 68.
He was born in Springfield, Ill., to William and Madeline (Zahm) Clutter.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War, aboard the destroyer USS Taylor, stationed at Pearl Harbor. He received a commendation for diving off the ship to save a sailor who had fallen overboard.
He married
Suzanne Foster of Springfield, Ill., in December 1956.
After leaving the Navy, Mr. Clutter settled in Decatur, Ill., where he worked as a railroad electrician.
In 1967, he was featured in Illinois newspaper and television reports for a warning system he had invented to prevent school buses from being struck by trains at railroad crossings. He met with the late Sen. Robert Kennedy, who expressed interest in legislation requiring this system on locomotives.
Mr. Clutter formed his own security alarm company, which he operated in Central Illinois and Southern California, and was president of a mobile-home owners' association in Illinois.
Mr. Clutter, who moved to the Sequim area in 1992, enjoyed history, literature, mechanics, science classical music and cooking.
He also continued to tinker and invent, but what he enjoyed most was working with excavation equipment and spending time with friends and neighbors.
He especially enjoyed going on ocean excursions with his son, John, who is a ship captain. In the past several years, they traveled to Alaska, Christmas Island, Panama and along the California coast.
Mr. Clutter is survived by son John of Dana Point, Calif.; sons and daughters-in-law William and Danielle of Springfield, Ill., Stephen and Mary of Honolulu and Glenn and Patricia of Oceanside, Calif.; daughter Lynn Green of Pleasanton, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by wife Suzanne and brother Robert.
Services: No local services planned. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.
Ann Hunt
Feb. 3, 1949 -- Oct. 10, 2004
Sequim resident Ann Hunt died at age 55. Cause of death is pending.
She was born in Norfolk, Va., to Grace Chapman Wells.
She earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Oregon and her master's degree at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Before coming to Washington, Ms. Hunt lived and worked in Thailand, Alaska, Hawaii, Virginia and California.
She is survived by sister Valerie Shamburger of Hawaii and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence `Scottie' McAlpin
March 30, 1930 -- Oct. 17, 2004
Sequim resident Clarence ``Scottie" McAlpin died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, of heart failure. He was 74.
He was born in Los Angeles to Loid and Florence (Woodley) McAlpin.
He married
Ruth B. Fink in Long Beach, Calif., on Sept. 25, 1965.
Mr. McAlpin, who served 23 years active duty with the Navy, retired as a signalman first class in 1972.
In 1977, he and his wife moved to Sequim, where he worked for D&K Rentals.
In addition to repairing items in his shop, Mr. McAlpin was active in Sequim Community Evangelical Free Church.
His wife died Jan. 12, 2003.
Services: Sunday, Oct. 31, 2 p.m., graveside service in Sequim View cemetery. The Rev. John McArthur will officiate. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.
Leonard Alfred McDaniel
Dec. 13, 1914 -- Oct. 26, 2004
Longtime Chimacum resident Leonard Alfred McDaniel died in Jefferson General Hospital, Port Townsend at age 89.
Services: Saturday, Oct. 30, 3:30 p.m., funeral in Community United Methodist Church, 130 Church Lane, Port Hadlock. The Rev. Phillip S. Harrington will officiate.
Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery in Chimcum. A gathering will follow at the Chimacum fire hall. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend is in charge of arrangements.
Lester Alvin Adams
Sept. 29, 1921 -- Oct. 24, 2004
Lester Alvin Adams of Forks died at age 83.
He was born in Tomahawk, Wis., the oldest of Percy D. and Wanda G. (Lutes) Adams' six children.
In 1928, his family moved to Shelton, where he attended school.
He enlisted in the Navy in May 1942 and became an aviation machinist's mate first class during World War II.
For service in Airship Squadrons 14 and 15, he received the American Area and Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign, Good Conduct and World War II Victory medals. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.
Mr. Adams married
Pauline Marian Hayward in Kamilche on June 8, 1947.
He became a self-employed logger. In 1964, he moved to Quilcene, where he was a logger and truck driver.
In 1972 he moved to Forks, where he continued in the logging industry and worked as a mechanic and machinist.
After retirement, Mr. Adams worked fishing shuttle for Prue and Ted Miller.
He enjoyed gatherings of family and friends, hosting an annual barbecue on July 4 and celebrating the Christmas season.
Hunting and fishing were also Mr. Adams' pastimes.
At age 78, he and his wife spent two summers jacking up their home and installing a new foundation.
He was a member of Forks Veterans of Foreign Wars
In addition to his wife of 58 years, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Don and Donna Adams, daughter and son-in-law Marleen and Sandy Amundson and sister Joanne McHenry, all of Forks; sisters Thelma June Froese of Kingston and Lila Rose Ellis of Tumwater, brother Adrian Adams of Tacoma, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister Anna Mae Archer.
Services: Friday, Oct. 29, 1 p.m., funeral in First Baptist Church, 651 S. Forks Ave., preceding the graveside service in Forks cemetery. Potluck will follow at the church. Mount Olympus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Port Angeles Kidney Center, 809 Georgiana St., Port Angeles, WA 98362. The family requests no flowers.
Forrest Kenneth Harris
July 26, 1917 -- Oct. 25, 2004
Forrest Kenneth Harris, 87, died in his Port Angeles home after a long illness.
He was born in Fort Scott, Kan., to Ira David and Ollie Mae (Simons) Harris.
He married
Mildred Marie Elbrader on Aug. 29, 1937.
Mr. Harris joined the Army in 1945 and served during one year of World War II.
He farmed, then worked as a machinist in Wichita, Kan., Huntington Park, Calif., Sekiu and Port Angeles, where he retired from Crown Zellerbach in 1971.
Mr. Harris enjoyed gardening and fishing in his later years.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Billie Ann Harris of Crawford, Colo.; daughter Linda Matlock of Lacey; sister Bonnie Noble of Wood River, Ill.; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

John Hyland
March 1, 1942 -- Oct. 26, 2004
John Hyland died in Sequim at age 62.

Elsie S. Lovelette
Nov. 27, 1934 -- Oct. 23, 2004
Port Angeles resident Elsie S. Lovelette died at age 69.
She was born to Alexander William and Helia Amelia (Laituri) Bell in Cle Elum, where she graduated high school in 1953.
Her October 1954 marriage to Rodger Gooler in Cle Elum ended with his death in October 1975.
She married
Ivan L. Lovelette on Sept. 17, 1977. He died June 5, 1997.
Mrs. Lovelette, who was a 36-year resident of Seattle, retired after 33 years employment with Boeing Aerospace as a machinist and moved to Sequim in 1990.
In addition to being an accomplished musician, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, fishing and camping, and participating in activities at her church.
She was a member of Bethany Pentecostal Church, Women's Aglow, American Legion Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Moose.
Mrs. Lovelette's survivors include her adopted children Arnold Johnson and Jean Johnson, both of Snohomish; brother Oliver E. Bell of Cle Elum; and sisters Irene M. Potter of Tillamook, Ore., and Diana G. Bell of North Bend.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by brothers Everett Bell, Walter Bell, Ted Hotchkiss and Henry Hotchkiss.
Services: Memorial at a later time. Private inurnment was in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond A. Still
July 2, 1933 -- Oct. 24, 2004
Sequim resident Raymond A. Still died at age 71 from pneumonia related to lung cancer.
He was born in Atchison, Kan., to Leo J. and Nathalie Helen (Ricker) Still Sr.
Mr. Still was in the Marine Corps in 1953-56, during which he rose to sergeant.
He graduated from San Diego State College in the late 1950s.
He then became an electronics technician in Alaska, where he worked on government contracts for 25 years.
He was a member of Teamsters, Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Elks and Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
Mr. Still's survivors include stepdaughter Lynn Westburry of Corona, Calif.; brother Leo J. Still of Harrisonburg, Va.; sisters Frances H. Stinchcomb of Lemon Grove, Calif., and Ginger Mueller of Arlington Heights, Ill.; and sister-in-law Barbara Crane of Sequim.
His wife died in August 2002.
Services: Thursday, Oct. 28, 11 a.m., memorial Mass in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Kurt Nagel will celebrate. There was cremation.
