Marjorie `Midge' Daniels
March 14, 1919 -- Nov. 11, 2004
Lifelong Jefferson County resident Marjorie ``Midge" Daniels died in Jefferson Healthcare hospital, Port Townsend, at age 85.
She was born on the family homestead in Port Hadlock to Albert Lee and Hannah S. (Thomas) McMahon.
After graduating from Chimacum High School on May 18, 1937, she moved to the Quilcene Fish Hatchery and worked at the Log Cabin Inn.
She moved back to Port Hadlock in 1947, and worked at Dave Bergstrom's grocery store in Lower Hadlock.
She worked in the Lower Hadlock post office, then was employed at the Port Townsend Paper Corp. bag factory
She moved to Port Townsend in 1958
She married
Jack A. Daniels on Oct. 16, 1966.
Mrs. Daniels then worked at Kai Tai Nursing Home, retiring after 27 years.
Survivors include son Herb Evanson of Beaver Valley, Port Ludlow; son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Karen Baker of Anacortes; daughters and sons-in-law Marilyn and Bob Davis of Quartzsite, Ariz., Maxine and Bob Robbins of Port Hadlock and Mary and David Crozier of Port Townsend; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband died May 31, 1985.
Services: Graveside observance was in Greenwood cemetery, Chimacum, on Nov. 14, with the Rev. Joan M. Anthony officiating. A gathering followed in the home of Mary and David Crozier.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of burial.
Richard Burton Demorest
Aug. 3, 1941 -- Nov. 2, 2004
Port Angeles resident Richard Burton Demorest died at age 63.
He was born to Burton Ullyses and Frances (Nevada) Demorest in Tulsa, Okla., where he graduated from Central High, the same school that his father and many other family members attended.
He studied drama in his youth, and performed from age 8 through his college years. He excelled in wrestling, tennis and football.
Mr. Demorest earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Tulsa and a master's degree in social work from the University of Oklahoma.
During the Vietnam War, he was a captain in the Army's 9th Infantry Division and served in Dong Tam. His numerous military awards included the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
In addition to being a social worker in East Los Angeles and south-central Los Angeles, where he mediated in the Watts riots and worked at the All Nations Foundation, Mr. Demorest was a psychiatric social worker at Southwest Mental Health in Compton, Calif., in 1970-76; a clinical social worker at Carl Albert Mental Health Center in McAlester, Okla., in 1976-81; and employed at Children's Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla., in 1981-91, before joining the staff of Peninsula Community Mental Health in Port Angeles.
He was an avid kayaker, chess player, reader, poet, artist and student of history.
Mr. Demorest, who was expert marksman, was a member of the National Rifle Association, Custer Battlefield Preservation Committee and Tulsa County Historical Society.
His marriage to Tracy Demorest Flynn on May 6, 1966, ended in divorce.
Mr. Demorest's survivors include brother and sister-in-law Ned and Suzanne Demorest.
Services: Inurnment will be in Riverside (Calif.) National cemetery.

William Frank Halkett

William Frank Halkett died in Port Angeles at age 73.

Gretchen Irene Lundstrom
May 11, 1921 -- Nov. 14, 2004
Chimacum resident Gretchen Irene Lundstrom died of respiratory failure at age 83.
She was born to Miles and Ruth (Gaither) Merryman in Lincoln, Neb., where she completed both high school and one year of college.
She moved to Queets in 1939.
She married
Irving Edwin Lundstrom in Shelton on Jan. 14, 1940.
Mrs. Lundstrom worked as a waitress and part-time housekeeper before becoming a clerk in grocery stores near Port Townsend.
She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses and, in addition to talking with people about the Bible, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and crocheting.
Survivors include son Irving E. Lundstrom Jr.; daughter and son-in-law Corene and Nick Kilmer; daughters Marilyn Kennedy and Rhonda Rogers; brother and sister-in-law Milford and Sherry Merryman; brother-in-law John Harvey; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Lundstrom's husband preceded her in death. She was also preceded by son-in-law Al Kennedy; sisters LaDenc Hake and Helen Harvey; and brother-in-law Patrick Hake.
Services: Saturday, Nov. 20, 1 p.m., in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 120 Logan St., Port Townsend. Dwayne Russell will officiate.
Dorothy Jane Busch
Jan. 24, 1930 -- Nov. 10, 2004
Dorothy Jane Busch died of throat cancer at home in Sequim. She was 74.
Mrs. Busch was born in Hysham, Mont., to Arthur E. and Mary Angeline (Mauro) Daley. She married
Bruce Busch on Dec. 28, 1998, in Sacramento, Calif.
She was married
previously to Donald R. Thiel, who is deceased.
Mrs. Busch worked as a bookkeeper, credit manager and secretary, and lived in Puyallup, Lakewood, Westport, Rocklin, Calif., and Sequim.
Survivors include her husband; son Martin Weatherman of Westport; sisters Delores Scholtz and Velli Light; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

John Charles Koenig
Oct. 11, 1936 -- Nov. 11, 2004
John Charles Koenig died of cancer at his Sequim home at age 68.
Mr. Koenig was born to Charles Oscar and Florence Blossom (Poling) Koenig in Keyport, N.J.
He married
Barbara Jean Lindsey in Flora, Ill., on Oct. 23, 1982.
Mr. Koenig served in the U.S. Navy.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University.
Mr. Koenig was vice president and chief financial officer of Hella N.A. in Plymouth, Mich. He retired in 2001 and moved with his wife to Sequim.
He enjoyed watching sports.
Mr. Koenig was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of Sequim; sons Karl J. Koenig of Lafayette, Ind., and John T. Koenig of Indianapolis, Ind.; stepson Scott M. Stepanich of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter Hallie Koenig and Kathleen Agor, both of Killeen, Texas; stepdaughter Shari Michael of Milwaukee, Wis.; and four grandchildren.
Services: Thursday, 8:30 a.m., funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E Maple St., Sequim, with Father Thomas Beattie presiding.

Fleet Stanton
Aug. 27, 1928 -- Nov. 9, 2004
Fleet Stanton died in Port Ludlow at age 76.
Mr. Stanton was born to Henry Fleet and Kathryn (Tifft) Stanton. He married
Laurena Tauscher on Aug. 25, 1954, in Huron, S.D.
Mr. Stanton served in the Army with the 147th Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Richardson, Alaska, from 1950 to 1952, and in the National Guard from 1952 to 1955.
He graduated from South Dakota School of Mines with a Bachelor of Science Degree in civil engineering in 1957, where he received achievement awards in geometronics and photogrammetry.
His schooling and work took him throughout the United States until 1960, when he settled in Utah. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1983, and moved to Port Ludlow in 1999.
Mr. Stanton enjoyed reading, computers and music. He played several instruments and was a member of a country band as a young man.
He was actively involved with senior citizen groups and a member of American Legion and Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of Port Ludlow; daughter Debbie Turpin of Port Townsend; brothers Keith Stanton of Minnesota and David Stanton of Pittsburgh, Pa.; sister Vivian Bristow of Santa Clarita, Calif.; and one grandchild.
Services: Private family memorial service.
R. H. `Van' VanValkenburg
Sept. 17, 1932 -- Nov. 10, 2004
R. H. ``Van" VanValkenburg died at his home in Mats Mats Bay.
Mr. VanValkenburg was born to Hellard and Mary Margaret (Sodja) VanValkenburg in Twin Falls, Idaho.
He married
Leone Augusta Balzan in Seattle on Nov. 5, 1953. She died in 1981.
Mr. VanValkenburg served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean War.
Mr. VanValkenburg owned Standard Batteries and Budget Batteries in Seattle. He acquired several pieces of commercial property in the Puget Sound area.
He retired to his farm on Mats Mats Bay.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law John and Kandice VanValkenburg of Kalispell, Mont., and Mike and Jeannie VanValkenburg of Carnation; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by brother Bud VanValkenburg and sisters Bobbie Lewis, Betty Russell and Dorothy Holt.

KATHRYN L. LONG
Kathryn L. Long died in Bremerton, Washington, on October 28, 2004. She was born November 21, 1949, in Tacoma, Washington.
She graduated form Port Angeles High School in 1968. Kathy enjoyed gardening, especially the growing of beautiful flowers.
A memorial service was held in her honor in Silverdale on Tuesday, November 2, at the Living Word Christian Center. Pastor Tim Skolrud officiated.
Kathy was preceded in death by her daughter, Katie Cooter.
Surviving relatives include her father, Lyle Lindelien, of Port Angeles; son Larry Cooter of Oregon; daughter Amy Long of New York; husband Gary Long of Oregon; brothers Larry Erickson of Vancouver, Washington, and Warren Erickson of Atlanta, Georgia; and sisters Karen Casseday of Seabeck, Washington, and Krystine Lindelien and Darla Lindelien of St. Paul, Minnesota.
