Edith A. Williams
Edith Anna Williams, 88, a lifelong resident of Latah County, died of age-related causes March 24, in Boise.

James B. Crow
James B. Crow, 63, retired director of the Washington State University Compton Union Building and Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum, died Friday at Pullman Memorial Hospital in Pullman, Wash., following a heart attack.

He was born March 31, 1936, to Arnold and Ruby White Crow at Laramie, Wyo. He graduated from high school at Laramie in 1954. He attended the University of Wyoming at Laramie and graduated in 1959.

He joined the Army Reserve and was called to active duty during the Berlin crisis. He was discharged from the reserves in 1966.

He went to work at the UW and was involved with student activities. In 1963, he came to WSU as assistant director of the CUB and was later named director of activities at the CUB. He earned a master's in business administration in 1967 at WSU. In 1972, he was named director of the Beasley Coliseum. He retired in March 1998.

He married Norma Rider June 19, 1965, at Spokane.

He enjoyed cooking, walking, camping, traveling, watching old movies, painting, playing the harmonica and spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandson.

He was an avid sports fan and especially of the Cougs.

He belonged to the Pullman Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed his morning coffee with his friends.

He is survived by his wife at the family home in Pullman; one daughter, Patti Crow of Seattle; one son, Mike Crow of Pullman; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Simpson United Methodist Church in Pullman. Dick Mather, teacher of the Christian Science Church, will officiate. Friends and business associates will share their memories.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the WSU Alumni Association.

Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman is in charge of arrangements.

Dana Lawrence Cleveland
96, Moscow resident
Dana Lawrence Cleveland of Moscow, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Village. He was 96. Arrangements are pending and will be announced when complete.

Doris Read Smith
90, St. John resident
Smith
Longtime St. John resident Doris Read Smith, 90, died on Oct. 23, 2007, after a brief illness at the Whitman Hospital in Colfax, Wash. Doris was well known for her beauty, feistiness, and sense of humor.

She was born in Washington, D.C., on July 5, 1917, to Fred and Mary MacDonald Read. She was raised in Sacramento, Calif., where she lived until attending college at the University of Oregon, in Eugene. Doris was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and graduated with a bachelor of science in physical education. While in college, she met Jackson Smith of Portland, Ore. They were married on Sept. 7, 1940. Following World War II, they lived briefly in Portland before joining his father on the family farm near St. John in 1948. She was a volunteer for the American Heart Association, a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Altar Society and the St. John Hospital Guild and was a longtime religious education teacher.

Doris is survived by her brother, Roderick (Nancy) Read of Sacramento, Calif.; her seven children, Cindy (Butch) Klaveano of Pomeroy; Linda (Mark) Blackman of Salem, Ore.; Read (Deanna Lust) Smith of St. John; Judy (Jim) Angus of Huntsville, Ala.; Wendy (Dennis) Gunnels of Spokane; Heidi (Tim) Danaher of Colfax; and Melissa (David) Hodgson of Upton, Mass.; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jackson Smith; a sister, Barbara Parker, and a brother, Frederick Read. A Rosary service will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in St. John. Following a family interment at the Holy Cross Mausoleum in Spokane, a Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 26, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colfax with Father Felix Lorge presiding.

Doris was an avid reader and memorial gifts may be made in her honor to the Friends of St. John Library, 19 E. Front St., St. John, WA 99171 or to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, P.O. Box 325, St. John, WA 99171.

Patricia Jewett
73, Pullman resident
Patricia J. Jewett, 73, of Pullman, a retired administrative assistant, died Oct. 22 at Pullman Regional Hospital. A celebration of her life will be at noon Oct. 26 at Living Faith Fellowship in Pullman. Kimball Funeral Home is caring for the family.

Anthony Cardon
92, Pullman resident
Anthony G. Cardon, 92, of Pullman, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Aspen Park Health Care Center in Moscow.

Anthony was born June 14, 1915, in Winnipeg, Canada, to Gustave and Eva (Superknott) Cardon. As a young boy he moved with his family to Los Angeles, Calif., and the surrounding areas where he attended elementary school. The family later moved to Crescent City, Calif., where Anthony graduated from Crescent City High School.

He met Vivian Brabant during this time and they were married Feb. 28, 1938, in Crescent City. They moved to Glendale, Calif., for a time during World War II where he worked in the sheet metal industry during the war effort. In 1944 they moved to Reno, Nev., where Anthony went to work as a guard at Stead Air Force Base.

In 1945 Anthony went to work with the Reno Police Dept. Following a 28-year career he retired as captain of detectives. During this time Anthony received numerous awards and commendations, as well as furthering his education through many training schools. He was a well respected officer and co-worker.

Following his retirement they moved back to California, settling in Sacramento. In 2003 they moved to Pullman to live near their son and family. Anthony enjoyed fishing, gardening and woodworking and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Marietta Rogers, and husband, Ralph; his son, Richard Cardon, and his wife, Virginia; one sister, Marie Annette Cardon; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian earlier this year in April; his parents; three brothers and five sisters.

The funeral Mass was celebrated today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and burial followed at the Pullman Cemetery. Kimball Funeral Home is caring for the family.

Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Maryknoll Brothers.

Clarence 'Bud' Ryan
76, Pullman resident
Clarence A. "Bud" Ryan Jr., 76, a longtime Pullman resident and retired Washington State University professor, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.

Bud was born in Butte, Mont., on Sept. 29, 1931, to Clarence and Agnes (Duckham) Ryan. He attended and graduated from Cathedral High School in Helena, Mont. He was awarded his undergraduate degree from Carroll College in Helena. Bud later was awarded his Ph.D in Bio-Chemistry from Montana State University, Bozeman, Mont. He continued his post- doctoral education at the Western Regional Laboratory, Albany, Calif., and Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.

Bud married the love of his life Pat Meunier on May 1, 1954, in Helena. The couple made their home in Bozeman, Corvallis, and Albany before moving to Pullman, Wash., in 1964 where Bud accepted a position at Washington State University. He began his tenure at WSU in the Dept. of Agricultural Chemistry where he was instrumental in forming the Institute of Biological Chemistry. Bud received many different awards over the course of his career including the Charlotte Y. Martin Professorship from WSU. He was the first member from WSU to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Bud also received an honorary Ph.D from WSU and Carroll College.

Bud was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a great mentoring teacher to many undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students in his laboratory. Although retired, he continued his research and dedication to education until the time of his death. Bud will be missed by those in his lab; Greg Pearce, Alisa Huffaker, PhD, Yube Yamaguchi, PhD, Guido Barona and Allison Greenberg.

Bud is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Pat, at the family home; his two daughters, Jamie Ryan and Jan Thrall and husband Terry; three brothers, Bill, Don, and Edward Ryan; his two granddaughters, Kymberly and Haleigh Thrall; a special brother-in-law Al Meunier; numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved very much; and his special colleague Greg Pearce. Bud was preceded in death by two sons, Steve and Joe Pat Ryan, and his parents.

A celebration of Bud's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Gladish Community Center Auditorium. Kimball Funeral Home is caring for the family. A reception will follow the service in the View Room of the Gladish Community Center.

The family suggests contributions to the Steve and Joe Pat Ryan Memorial Fund, Carroll College, 1601 N. Benton Ave., Helena MT 59625-0002, or a charity of your choice.

Roy O'Brady
90, Viola resident
Roy K. O'Brady of Viola died peacefully Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Avalon Care Center in Pullman, Wash., at the age of 90.

Roy was born Nov. 14, 1916, at Cass Lake, Minn., to John and Winifred Smith O'Brady. He grew up and attended school in Minnesota and left home with his brother at the age of 16. Roy traveled around working at various jobs until joining the Navy in 1942. He served on a hospital ship in the South Pacific as well as serving with the Naval Aviation units in Florida and Cuba. Following his discharge he moved to Texas and later Vancouver. He went to school in Portland under the G.I. Bill to become a communication technician.

He worked at the Clearwater Timber Protective Association for a time, then Washington State University and finally to the University of Idaho as a communications technician until his retirement in 1978. He was an avid reader, and as a result, was a wealth of information and knowledge. He also loved model trains and was instrumental in the model railroad exhibit at the Latah County Fairgrounds. He also served on the Viola-Rock Creek Cemetery Board for several years. Roy will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Roy and Donna Bailey were married in Lewiston on May 8, 1954, and enjoyed celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in 2004 with friends and family. She survives at their home. Roy also is survived by three sons, Scott, now teaching in Thailand, Sean (Kerrie) who teaches in Shelly, Idaho, and Steven (Lara) who lives in Sheridan, Ore.; and a daughter, Wendy (Caleb) Horton in Lewiston; as well as nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a grandson.

At Roy's request there will be no funeral service and his ashes will be placed on the family property at a later time.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Short's Funeral Chapel, Moscow.

Sandra Haarsager
61, Moscow resident
Sandra Haarsager, 61, of Moscow, Idaho, died Saturday following an extended illness. She was born Sandra Lynn Smith on Sept. 17, 1946, in West Plains, Mo., to Victor and Melba Smith. She was raised near Twin Falls, Idaho. Sandra attended Albertson College of Idaho and graduated in 1968 with degrees in English and psychology. She moved to Boise and worked for the Idaho Statesman as a reporter and later for the State Department of Education as an assistant to the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Sandra was married to Jim Watkinson in 1969, which ended in divorce. On Jan. 1, 1977, Sandra married Dennis Haarsager in Ketchum. They moved to Pullman, Wash., in 1978. Sandra worked for the Washington State University Foundation and later served as director of University Relations at the University of Idaho. Their daughter Anna was born in 1984 and son Andrew was born in 1986.

Sandra had a passion for journalism, and through the years worked as a journalist for three Idaho papers and the general manager of Western Printing Company. In addition to a master's degree in public administration from Boise State University she earned a Ph.D. in American studies from Washington State University. The family moved to Moscow in 1987. Eventually Sandra became a professor of communications at the University of Idaho, and for a time served as the associate dean of the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences.

In addition to journalism, Sandra had a longtime passion for music and the arts. She studied many instruments, sang a beautiful soprano, and could often be heard playing background piano at community events. She was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse, which she served for several years in the position of music director.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Dennis of Moscow; daughter, Anna, of Spokane; son, Andrew, of Providence, R.I.; stepdaughter, Jennie, of Laramie, Wyo.; father, Victor Smith, of Moscow; and brother, Mike Smith, of Rupert.

A celebration of Sandra's life will take place Thursday, Oct. 11 at the University of Idaho Administration Building Auditorium promptly at 7:30 p.m. A private graveside service will be at the Viola Cemetery earlier in the day.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Association of Churches at Friends of the UUA, P.O. Box 55019, Boston , MA 02205-8253; or to the Mennonite Central Committee service organization at https://mcc.org/donate/.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Short's Funeral Chapel, Moscow.

Edmund V. VanCampen

"Ned" Edmund Vern VanCampen, 88, died Saturday at Kennewick Life Care Center.

He was born in Yankton, S.D., and lived in Kennewick for 52 years.

He was retired from a creamery in Idaho.

Mueller's Chapel of the Falls is handling arrangements.
